Please do NOT go to Disney World if you (or your children) are sick

ITA- I am not one of those fear folks but I would not take my kids or myself anywhere including Disney if I posed the risk of infecting others. Some of these posts stun me. We truly live in a world of gripe if Sally comes to school and makes your peanut sick and you miss work but god forbid you miss Disney or r/s your trip and perhaps save a childs life. The sense of entitlement is amazing.

It is a flu, I give you that. But the reason it is spreading like it is and kids are dying is because of exposure. If your known to be sick I agree rest up and stay home. Let the babies come back and enjoy Mickey when they feel 110% not when they are masked by marks of Motrin and puffy eyes.

Children are at Disney for make a wish and to enjoy themselves. To unknowingly expose is one thing but to do it on purpose and call it just a flu is selfish. What may be easy and a 3 day spat for Sally may be more than a number game in that death toll or admission for a family who is states away from their home. Some kids stay weeks in ICU and breathing tents. Is it fair to impose that on someone? No.

But it will happen, ppl do not respect others nor care... so if your going to Disney and your worried take percautions and if your child has a weak immune system or otherwise maybe consider something else if needed. You have to watch out when the world does not care about no one but themselves.

I would feel horrid if I knew I infected someone and I could have prevented it. Something so small and so kind to do to keep a dream alive for someone else who has done all they can and unknowingly walked in your fever ridden cough!

But this a golden tip, if your sick (contagous) stay home no matter if its work, school, or vacation. What is easy for you may be hard for someone else. Its just a point of respecting others and ending this stupid spreading bug from getting any worse.

I just got back last night, and I did notice that there were a few people running around Disney World with what seemed to be more than a little cold. When you have a barking cough that sounds like you are hacking up your lungs, it at least sounds like you shouldn't be in the parks.

I have allergies myself, so I know that people can be coughing and sneezing and not be contagious. I do try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I did back away from some people who didn't sound well. And I used a ton of hand sanatizer too.

If you know you are sick, please stay home.

I have allergies and breathing problems and sometimes I get a tickle in my throat that partially closes off my airway. When this happens I have a BARKING COUGH that sounds like I'M HACKING MY LUNGS OUT! I am not contagious, but I sure don't sound good. I also don't feel good because I am not getting proper ventilation and most of the air is going into my stomach instead of my lungs. This causes me to burp and gag. Hope none of you ever has to be around when this happens to me. It's scary for me, but most people think I'm sick.

Did I miss the post where people said they would take their children while they were vomiting?

If my child has the flu, but is not vomiting, no temperature, I'm good to go.

lol, vomit came up somewhere. forgive the pun.:rotfl:

Vomitting isn't a primary symptom of the flu.

I wouldn't drag a sick kid around a park for any reason, but that is just the way I am.

Sick (mild cold, earache, allergies etc) is one thing. Flu symptoms and particularly H1N1 is another. We were at WDW from Oct 10-17 (four kids). One day after returning (Oct. 18) the kids had a high fever which turned into a horrible flu. Dr. suspected H1N1 but they aren't testing in our area since the labs are so backed up. Three of the four kids were out of school the entire week. Due to the timing of when their symptoms started (8 days after leaving home) it is highly likely that they picked it up at Disney World. I do not expect that parents cancel their trip for a mild illness but if your kids are really sick, please keep them home.

no. 100 children have died in the US since the outbreak began. NOT all in one week. An yes, for 99% of people swine flu is like a simple coald with symptoms less sever than seasonal flu.

My daughter's best friend had h1n1 and her mother said the typical flu was FAR worse. She was dx on Saturday and back to school by Wednesday after being fever free for 36-48 hours. I'm not saying that you should take your child to WDW when they have the flu, but let's not all freak out either.

Yo do sound callus, especially to those who have lost a family member. My friend lost her uncle this week to H1N1.

For the record, H1N1 actually does target kids more than adults in regards to the percentage of people getting infected. More than 50% of the kids at my children's school have been infected. To date, none of them have died . . .thank goodness. It infects adults at a lower rate, but that doesn't mean that adults cannot catch it. It is true that the vast majority of people recover.

.

I knew that posting the truth in such a direct form would automatically sound callus, which is why I put the disclaimer on my statement letting everyone know that it was not my intention, but that I realize what it is. I was trying to highlight that only 10% of the people dying are kids. I'm sorry for your friend's uncle, but I think my entire post may have escaped you. Also, we seem to agree on all points otherwise.

***"1000 people have died. 100 of those are children. I think those are decent odds when it comes to children. I certainly don't mean to sound callus, but it doesn't seem to be setting it's eyes out on kids."***

Isn't anyone getting vaccinated for H1N1?:confused3

Our family isn't. This includes me, DH, DS 8, DS 5, and DD 1-3/4. I was offered a dose right away when it became available as I work on the ambulance and they were giving it to healthcare workers first, but I declined.

I got the flu shot.... I am waiting for the H1N1 and I will be one of the first group of people in my town to get one.... I had a kidney transplant 19 1/2 years ago and I am considered high risk since I basically have no immune system.

But I am going to take precautions and am still going to Disneyworld next week... I am currently status 7 on the transplant list waiting for another kidney and I don't know how many more times I will be able to go to Disney... So I am going to make the most of it....

Sorry for the rant..... :grouphug:

May I ask why?

If my kids have the flu it typically passes in a couple days and I will be back at the Dis. As long as they are not throwing up. Sorry but I am not canceling a vacation because my kids "might" give it to someone else. All three are in school so our family is usually got some sort of illness from now until they get out next year.

The media freaks everyone out about getting sick and suddenly i have to lock myself up. Give me a break. Thousands die every year from the regular Flu. Stop being paranoid

There is a new item at the Disney gift shops this year for all you paranoid people. It is the Disney Bubble. Now you and your family can walk around in a fashionable plastic bubble all day without the worry of someone even breathing on you. On sale now.
It's attitudes like this that cause mandatory quarantines and closures of events, schools etc. You can't count on some people do do the right thing so the authorities have to step in..Some people choose to bury their head in the sand and are selfish enough to not care that they are spreading illness. I think this is not only callous, but despicable. No other word for it.

Yes, most will have a mild case, but some will have a serious one and may die. That's why things like H1N1 reach a pandemic level..because of dimwits who only think about themselves.:sad2:

I do think it's kind of selfish, if you know for a fact, that you or your child is ill, and then to just go ahead with your vacation, or whatever event, knowing that you (in the general sense) could very well pass your illness along to others, especially those who have a low immune system, for whatever medical reason. I just think that's very selfish.

Yup, sure did. I got mine at work last week, and my 2 kids (4 and 6) got it at their pediatrician's office yesterday. They'll also get a booster shot in 4 weeks.

For those who have gotten a seasonal flu vaccine before but won't get the H1N1, do you realize it is made exactly the same way, by the same drug companies and at the same factories? Not really sure where the "I won't get the H1N1 vaccine!!!!" hysteria is coming from. I would much rather get a vaccine for me and my kids then have someone end up hospitalized. :confused3

Agreed. My post was strongly worded, but it's something I feel passionate about. When you've watched someone gasping for every breath, someone who was previously healthy and now they may die, it makes a big impression. If I were to show up at work with this,(or any other contagious illness) I would be immediately told to go home(or the ER). If I suspected that I gave something to a patient or coworker, I'd be upset.

Sadly, there are still many misconceptions about H1N1 and vaccines in general. My hospital does not allow anyone under 18 to visit in the hospital or anyone who appears to be sick. They enforce this too. They have to be stern about this because they can't depend on some of the public to be sensible.

All of the experts in this thread claiming that H1N1 is not serious or severe are spreading the same kind of misinformation as Fox News. The H1N1 can be extremely severe as it takes 5-6 hours from first symptom onset to full on fever. It is often accompanied by pneumonia which is the real killer for most. My Grand Nephew was just released from the hospital after 3 days because the hospital needed the bed. He is still listed as serious but the Visiting Nurses are treating him at home. Don't think this is not serious because the one you hurt the most could be your neighbor, the person on the plane next to you or the next person who takes the elevator you just used. :headache:

:thumbsup2 Well said, and i am sorry to hear about your grand nephew, hope he gets well soon.

I applaud that hospital. My local hospitals have begun to not allow visitors under 18 and restrict visiting hours to between 3p- 7p ONLY, and you would not believe the outcry from people or the people that somehow believe that neither policy means them..I had one guy bring 3 young children who were snotting all over themselves into the CANCER UNIT to visit someone in for a Bone marrow Transplant, and then get mad when we told him they could not be there because of age, and the fact that they were sick, and it was AFTER visiting hours..It is no wonder we don't have a worse of a pandemic with mutation.

Isn't anyone getting vaccinated for H1N1?:confused3

Unfortunately, the vaccine is not availble in all areas yet. My state sent all of the first wave of vaccines to 2 areas ( Philly and Pittsburg) .So even as a healthcare provider , I am not able to get my vaccine till Mid-November at the earliest. With the fact that I work with the flu patients and also cancer patients, and have a school aged daughter, It will be a MIRACLE if I don't get the flu before then

There are lines for the H1 vaccine and only certain criteria qualify and even then there is a shortage. Some pregnant women who are top priority are not able to find vaccine. I have had the swine flu and fortunately it was mild. It isn't mild for everyone. A man in Atlanta was in the hospital for a month in an induced coma and only had a 10% chance of living. Luckily he made it because his doc heard about a new treatment that worked for him.

How about a compromise if anybody in my family gets sick with the flu at WDW.......we quarantine ourselves at Universal. :-)
