I can't imagine making a decision as large as DVC based on discounts I might or might not get............but I overheard an interesting conversation today..........a man and woman were VERY TICKED that they weren't getting shopping discounts in the Magic Kingdom............they were going to contact Disney about their horrible false advertising that had led them to believe they would get 15% off of every purchase made at Disney World. Am I crazy or did this person just not read the advertising materials carefully---------I bought back in the BCV days and our guide actually said that the perks could go away at any time. I never felt misled but I do read fine print pretty compulsively.

Anyway, don't buy for the discounts..........nothing is promised there.

Man, you'd have to do a LOT of shopping to recoup the cost of your points, even if you COULD get the 15% off your purchases! :rotfl2:

I sure wouldn't buy anything like DVC for a measly discount on shopping! I'd rather get a reduction in the price than have "perks".

Although, that AP discount can add up pretty quick... if you assume it will be around for 10 years, for us that's about $2,000 in savings on the park tickets. For 50 years, now you are talking $10,000! Again, major assumption that the ticket discount will remain that long.... but still... that's about a 100 pt add-on... :teeth: So quick GO BUY MORE POINTS! :rolleyes1

Some people will use any reason to throw a hissy fit!

Maybe the couple was from California...the old Magic Kingdom Club/Disney Club did give in park shopping discounts at DisneyLAND. Maybe they assumed DVC and WDW would be similar.

I carry the Perks booklet with me so I can pull it out if there is any confusion. I agree some people will have a fit over anything.

We didn't have that great perk the first 8 years of ownership, and we didn't have the free tickets others got. I just don't see a perk as a reason to buy. I sure do LOVE those AP discounts though! I'd sure miss them if they went away, but they are NOT expected. There's hardly a perk around now that was in place when we purchased.

Well, maybe they'll be so unhappy that they'll sell their points through TTS and a more discerning buyer can enjoy the 10% discount on the purchase of their points (vs "new")!

In general I'd agree with the OP advice but there are exceptions. It would not be difficult to get real value for a small package for the right person even if they never stayed at DVC. These would include anyone who visits WDW regularly such as locals, other timeshare owners, snowbirds that winter in the area or even those that still prefer to stay at other WDW resorts. Say one bought 50 points at BWV for $5000 total out of pocket and yearly dues around $250 or so. One could easily rent those points for around $500-600 per year, use the free valet parking, other discounts including golf and the AP discount. It's certainly less of a benefit for the AP for FL residents but still worthwhile. And if one knew going in they were doing it for the discounts, you could have multiple buyers on one deed all getting the discount.

We were just at WDW last weekend for our first trip home to VWL (loved it!)
I had a voucher from DVC for an AP so we stopped at Downtown Disney to activate it there. When I asked for a list of the discounts available with the AP, the woman at Guest Services was very snippy and told me there were different benefits for DVC discounted AP's than for regular full price AP's. She assured me that one of the differences would be that DVC AP's did NOT have the 10% discount at the big Disney World store at Downtown Disney. She didn't have anything in writing to say that, of course, but she was absolutely positive. AND absolutely WRONG.

Pay attention to the written items you get with anything you buy from Disney. If there is ever a question, you can always pull out your discount guide to educate a cast member.

I agree, after getting back home and looking back at some of the discounts I was eligible for, I realized that I was incorrectly informed by some CMs and was not given certain discounts. Example: The DDE discount does apply at Tusker House in AK, I was told by the CM taking my order that they did not have any discounts... Could have saved 20% if I had the sheet I printed...

Is it possible that you could send your receipt, etc. in and get a refund to your credit card or something? Maybe it might not be that worth it on a dinner for two but if it were on something substantial is this something that is allowed? Just curious . . .
