An Alaskan ulu knife WILL cut your thumb and you WILL head straight to the emergency room for stitches. That was the result of attempting to make homemade scalloped ham and potatoes. Just a heads up! :rotfl:

That sucker is nothing but trouble and it does cut easily like buttah! :thumbsup2

Oooops! Ya okay? I have an ulu too. I try real hard to keep my fingers out of the way.

I've never seen one of those. Sorry about your thumb. That does look like one wicked instrument. How does it work, um, besides on fingers?

Thats what you get for looking away for just a nano-second for the football score. :headache:

:lmao: See what a dangerous sport football is?

I think the ticket with those things is to get a wooden bowl instead of a cutting board, then you can keep the hand that isn't on the handle completely out of the way!

RNMOM, they are awesome knives. They work really well. Great skinning tool as well as a cutting tool...should the need arise.

How many stitches? Ouch!!!!

Michelle76, uh, thanks for the suggestion but I don't plan on skinning anything soon. :lmao: Oh, wait, I have 3 annoying cats!?!

Do you chop with it or cut or dice? By the looks of it you would grip it with the handle in your palm and fingers on the other side, right? I can just imagine my son who fancies himself a chef, he would love this thing.

You can't say things like that here!!! Didn't you see the to declaw or not to declaw debate thread on here today!!!:lmao: What would they say to you taking the kitty's skin!!

Of course I meant after they lived their long, pampered lives. Uh huh. ;)

Hey I was just trying to save you another trip to the ER, when they get done with you.....but then again that thing is scary looking i wouldn't come near you if you were holding it:scared:

Eskimoes have been using them for centuries and I wonder how many had to go to emergency rooms. :confused3 :lmao:

You know, I remember my friend Pete telling me years ago about watching the traditionals use them in Alaska. He said they give them to the kids when they are quite small, and by the time they are five years old they handle them like an extension of their bodies, just as you and I handle a pencil. :confused3

Fish maybe? :lmao:

They are really versatile, but IMO more suited to chopping and dicing than slicing. But that is probably because I'm Irish and not genetically predisposed to use it properly (joking...). Mine has a chunkier handle than the picture she showed, and has a cutout beneath it for your fingers. So I handle mine more or less grasped in my fist. If I were skinning, I would probably slide my fingers behind (or under, as it were) the blade. I have an antique double-bladed one too. I don't think those are traditional...but it works well for chopping greens and such.

Ouch! That had to hurt!

Glad you're ok though!:)

I was being so careful with it UNTIL I CHECKED THE FOOTBALL SCORE! I was so ticked at myself because I was salivating over scalloped ham and potatoes! The Ulu was working so slick until it happened...
