I just started buying scented candles in the jar. I have purchased from Walmart (cheapie brands), Kohls, ebay (soy) and Yankee candle. I am looking to lower my cost but still get the strongest, yummiest smelling candles (not Walmart). Are votives as good as the jar candles? I know they wouldn't last as long, but if they cost less money per ounce than the jar candles, are they a better deal? I just lit a Jack Frost votive from Yankee, and to be truthful, I really can't smell it at all. I am also confused about burning the votives. If you use a glass votive holder, can you burn it until the entire candle is liquified? How do you get the votive holder empty to burn a different scent? Should I just burn the votives in a small room? Also, when you buy a 16 oz jar candle, is just the candle 16 oz, or does that include the weight of the jar? I just bought 7 26oz jar candles from ebay, and the UPS tracking for my package delivery says the box is about 26 lbs. Shouldn't be more like 12 lbs? What are the strongest/least expensive scented candles you recommend? TIA!

Votives work best in small rooms like bathrooms. I think the jar candles are best, and you get what you pay for with candles. My favorites are Yankee, and Gold Canyon Candle, both are on the pricier end of candles. To me, the cheapies aren't even worth it b/c you can hardly smell them, and they don't burn evenly so you're wasting money losing all that candle that won't burn.

To clean votive holders: of course you can burn them until they're all liquid, but once they're gone, place them in the freezer for about 30 minutes to an hour. Remove, and the remainder of the candle should just pop out. You may need a fork or something to help with it.

Be sure to trim your wicks when they get to long. It's not safe to burn candles on a long wick. :)

IMHO the jar candles retain their scent the longest. They also last the longest.

I think the jar candles are the best value for the money. I don't burn them, I use candle warmers, and you can refresh the scent when using a candle warmer by adding the oils in the same scent. I wouldn't suggest this if you are burning them due to flamability issues.

As far as not smeeling the scent, sometimes your nose just gets too accustomed to a scent--like the peole who wear too much perfume. Walk outdoors for a bit, then come back in, you should smell it.

As far as the votive, you can burn it until there's pretty much nothing left, but be careful it's on a heat proof, flameproof surface--your stove top is a good solution. If you let it get down too low the votive holder can crack. When there's only about 1/4" left, extinguish it and let it cool. Then put it in teh freezer overnight. In the morning stick a butter knife down the side and the remaining wax should pop right out.

I pretty much don't use votives, when I do it's for setting a mood with candle light as opposed to scenting a room. I have no idea if the weight includes the glass or not, I've never gotten that anal about it. The weight does seem off on your package, and the glass jars are only an ounce or two, so I can't imagine that making a difference.

I prefer Yankee Candle and Partylite brands. They both seem to be heavily scented, and both seem to last a long time. I don't buy candles based on value, I buy the scents I enjoy, and like I said, pretty much use them on candle warmers, which dramatically increase the lifespan and is MUCH safer. A medium Yankee jar candle on a candle warmer that's left on all the time will retain it's scent for 2-3 months, and like I said, can be refreshed with the scneted oils.

I use tart warmers and the tarts. They smell more than the jar candles and only cost around $1 each. I have used Yankee candle ones and the cheap ones from AC Moore. I find that some scents are stronger than others too. The tarts also let you change scents without breaking the bank.

Votives are pretty weak on scent. I like jar candles and wax tarts. Some scents are much more powerful and long-lasting than others. I like Yankee candles and White Barn (Bath and Body Works). I almost always get them on sale -- the next time White Barn will be 75% off is summer, though. We get a lot of coupons for Linens and Things and Bath and Body Works as well as the Yankee store.

Kohl's has just started carrying Yankees. I've not watched their pricing, but Kohl's is notorious for putting stuff on sale regularly and really marking down at the end of the season.

I have an electric votive warmer that I love! It seems to really bring the scent out. :thumbsup2

I love gold canyon to me they smell better then yankee. It might just be that I can't smell the one scent I'm using very well. I use smaller jars in the bathrooms are well. They come in quite a few sizes.

Have you tried making your own candles. You can put in as much scent oil as so you can have really strong smelling ones. The stuff isn't that expensive either!

The strongest scented candle I currently have is from Bath & Body Works. Whoa, is that thing FRAGRANT! lol.

I prefer jar candles, but most of my candles are votives, simply because they're cheaper and I can change the scent more often. I also don't think the jar candles are very attractive. I have such pretty votive holders that I would hate to store them somewhere. ;)

At the Renaissance Festival we stumbled onto these folks, and I've been ordering from them ever since (it has been 3 or 4 years). They are reasonable and have the best scents. The Mint Julep and Vanilla Mint are wonderful. So are the Aroma Therapy candles (love Comfort and Bliss). The squares last for a very long time, and they offer all kinds of jars too. The Bluebonnet is a great floral, and is something different than you usually find on the market.

Another tip on saving money: Yankee has a "scent of the month" at a discounted price every month. You can also check their website www.yankeecandle.com for clearance items.

I am a yankee candle tart addict.

I love the tarts. I can change the scent more often than with a jar candle.

I'm a Gold Canyon fan too - I became a demo just to get the discount, lol! They really are my favorite candles - the Ginger Lime scent is my absolute favorite! I wouldn't say they smell better than Yankee, but the scents are stronger and they burn longer. The votives are very strong. They also come in over 90 scents. Yankee candles are my second favorite, especially the tarts. I also like the Yankee plug in scents, those last a really long time.

Gold Canyon candles are less expensive than Yankee, but since they're sold at parties, after you pay shipping fees the cost between the two are about the same.
