I just started buying scented candles in the jar. I have purchased from
Walmart (cheapie brands), Kohls, ebay (soy) and Yankee candle. I am looking to lower my cost but still get the strongest, yummiest smelling candles (not Walmart). Are votives as good as the jar candles?
IMHO the jar candles retain their scent the longest. They also last the longest.
I know they wouldn't last as long, but if they cost less money per ounce than the jar candles, are they a better deal?
I think the jar candles are the best value for the money. I don't burn them, I use candle warmers, and you can refresh the scent when using a candle warmer by adding the oils in the same scent. I wouldn't suggest this if you are burning them due to flamability issues.
I just lit a Jack Frost votive from Yankee, and to be truthful, I really can't smell it at all. I am also confused about burning the votives. If you use a glass votive holder, can you burn it until the entire candle is liquified? How do you get the votive holder empty to burn a different scent?
As far as not smeeling the scent, sometimes your nose just gets too accustomed to a scent--like the peole who wear too much perfume. Walk outdoors for a bit, then come back in, you should smell it.
As far as the votive, you can burn it until there's pretty much nothing left, but be careful it's on a heat proof, flameproof surface--your stove top is a good solution. If you let it get down too low the votive holder can crack. When there's only about 1/4" left, extinguish it and let it cool. Then put it in teh freezer overnight. In the morning stick a butter knife down the side and the remaining wax should pop right out.
Should I just burn the votives in a small room? Also, when you buy a 16 oz jar candle, is just the candle 16 oz, or does that include the weight of the jar? I just bought 7 26oz jar candles from ebay, and the UPS tracking for my package delivery says the box is about 26 lbs. Shouldn't be more like 12 lbs? What are the strongest/least expensive scented candles you recommend? TIA!
I pretty much don't use votives, when I do it's for setting a mood with candle light as opposed to scenting a room. I have no idea if the weight includes the glass or not, I've never gotten that anal about it. The weight does seem off on your package, and the glass jars are only an ounce or two, so I can't imagine that making a difference.
I prefer Yankee Candle and Partylite brands. They both seem to be heavily scented, and both seem to last a long time. I don't buy candles based on value, I buy the scents I enjoy, and like I said, pretty much use them on candle warmers, which dramatically increase the lifespan and is MUCH safer. A medium Yankee jar candle on a candle warmer that's left on all the time will retain it's scent for 2-3 months, and like I said, can be refreshed with the scneted oils.
