I'm not too sure where to put this post since it doesn't concern Disney, but it seems the most appropriate place is the family board.

My 7 year old son has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. I'm reluctant to put him on medication at this point. I'm working with his school to come up with classroom accomodations, procedures, etc., to address his needs. I read about a biofeedback device called Play Attention. My main purpose of this thread is to see if anyone out there has first-hand knowledge of this device, that is, has actually used one or know someone who has. Its very expensive, about $2000. However, we're willing to buy it if we feel it would be beneficial. Basically, its a type of helmet the child wears for about 20 minutes 2x a day. This helmet has brainwave sensors which enable the child to play video games by thought alone. The idea is that it teaches him to concentrate. There are built in distractions. If the child doesn't stay on target and is distracted the game either quits or goes back to a previous level and he has to start from there. The whole idea is that is helps to actually rewire the brain in some way so that he is better able to pay attention and concentrate. Well, like I said, we are willing to buy this, but first I'd like to hear from someone who has used this and what their opinion is. Thanks!

all i can say is think of the child, for years i refused to put my dtr on meds, but i am so glad i did and so is she, she is focused, her f's are now a's and there are meds that do not put her in a zombie state, remember we must do what is best for our children, if you want to talk more you can msg me but you will have a support link no matter what you decide, you can try meds, my doc is great we did test meds 10 days until we found the right one for my dtr i am so glad i did but i beat myself up because for 2 years i had refused to even consider it.
Good luck
ps that device sounds like it would really piss a kid off, you cannot force a child to concentrate, especially with adhd, what you must realize is with this disorder, the children want to they really want to concentrate but it is difficult, they try but it is hard, i think it would not be helpful, but i have never used it, i don't think i would do that.

Hi,

I work with a lot of kids with ADHD in a childrens hospital setting. I have never heard of the game helmet idea before, so cant give pros or cons for it. I do know about several other alternative therapies from listening therapy to wearing special glasses. The kids who seem to make the most progress are now taking medications. There are several medicaitons available now days, and if you have a good doctor they will help choose the one that is best for your child without making them a zombie. Do you know if you could use the helmet for a trial period? That is just such an expensive piece of equipment...does the company offer any research based results? what does your doctor think of this device?

Best wishes in finding what works best for your child, when you find the right solution, you will know....

Ok, this isn't the debate board! I'm really not interested in starting a debate as to the merits of medication for ADHD. I simply asked if anyone has had first hand experience (not unfounded opinions) with the Play Attention device and their opinion based on their experience. Obviously, the Play Attention device is not the only method of treatment I'm looking at.

This DISer was on Disney with Families Board loking for some opinions and exprience with help with her ADHD child.Hopefully y'all over here can help her out.

Thanks!

WOW!!...I realize you didn't ask for opinions but I don't think anybody intended to offend you with there own personal experiences....

I also have no experience with this product but thankfully my son is only mild ADHD and we have managed without meds..

Good Luck in your search..
