Plato's Closet

Has any one sold clothes to Plato's Closet? My son has a TON of things he won't wear. Most are fairly new or never worn. Is it worth it? How much did you make? Thanks for any info.

My 18 year old shops and sells her stuff there. I can tell you they are VERY picky about their merchandise - if it's more than 2 years old (even if it's new with tags), and if it's not name brand (Hollister, Abercrombie, Forever 21 type brands, etc.), they probably won't take it. They are pretty particular about season and sizes too. If you stop in and ask they can let you know exactly what they are currently looking for.

They have taken maybe 5% of what DD has brought in - and she takes great care of her clothes and wears current styles. They typically give her about $4-$6 per item - which is definitely more than you'd get if you tried to sell at a garage sale.

That said, it's a GREAT place to shop because they are so picky. Most items will cost you less than $14 and - it's all name brand and pretty current!

Thanks! Maybe I'll just take a variety of things and see how it goes. It's mostly boy stuff in smaller sizes. 30x34 jeans and small/medium shirts. Do they take semi formal dresses?

Do you have any independent consignment shops in your area? Our local shop used to deal mostly with wedding dresses and stuff, but they recently expanded to have a whole juniors section and area for young men. You could also try listing on Craigslist.

I also find their stuff to be over priced. Dd wanted some Aeropostale sweats they had but they wanted more than the store was charging during a sale. Needless to say we got the new ones at the store.

I have seen a lot of "swip swap" type groups cropping up on FB recently. I have actually sold a bunch of stuff, especially clothes, and NWT things. Sometimes it is about timing, I had a few dresses up for months and refreshed the listing by liking it or commenting S/A around formal/prom season and they sold in 2 days.

I agree with this. We took a big box in and she took only new with tags and they had to be name brand. We made $27, DD was looking at clothes while I waited and we saw some really high prices. Don't people shop sales? This stuff was way over priced I can't believe they would be able to sell it.

I guess I lucked out when I took DS basketball shorts in. I had 8 pair and accepted the $28 they offered. I was happily surprised as they were just typical nylon shorts, not cargo's. I think maybe 2 were Nike, but the rest were a mix from Kohl's and even Walmart. I then went back with 4 pairs of Levis, they took 3 for another $12..they did say they want dark and black jeans..no light wash type. I thought $40 for the stuff was decent,(tho odd that the shorts and jeans were each paying out about the same $) they were shorts after all and way more than I prob would have gotten at a garage sale. I got a surprise $5 credit as well since the customer ahead of me accidentally took my bag with the light color pair of jeans in with her stuff. They called her cell and she turned back and returned them, but Plato's gave both of us a $5 gift card which was nice.

As others have said - they are very particular about what they take, even new with tags, if the person who is going through your bag doesn't like it, they won't take it. AND they give you attitude. Their prices are more expensive than the sale prices at the store. Years ago when they first started you could get some really good deals - now, they are not worth the gas driving to the store. I use a consignment shop near my house, whatever is not sold, I take to the salvation army or give them to my sister, who donates it to her local church.

We've been pretty happy with Plato's Closet selling my DD's clothes. We get more than we'd get selling them at a rummage sale. We usually have about 25 items, they usually buy about 9 or 10 items and we've been getting $27-$30. We've been happy with that. They will buy different things at different times, I've brought in some things 2 or 3 times and the 2nd or 3rd time, they buy it. Think it depends on what they're looking for and what season it is. Ours is always looking for men's items. We've never gotten bad attitudes there, they're always nice. We haven't bought much there. We can usually buy things on sale cheaper than what they sell for there. Hope this helps.

Our experience wasn't positive either. When I thought about what you can take off your taxes donating clothes, it's just not worth the bother.

I've had a negative experience there as well. They are extremely picky about what they take, and they offer hardly anything for the items they do take. After they go through your things, a haughty 16 year old will hand back your clothes with a sneer and outline all of the reasons they didn't take them.

Wow! The locations must really differ. My nearly new items from Express and Hollister were returned with an eye roll.

A lot of towns have a buy/sell/trade facebook page that you could try. You can usually get a better price for your items that way.
