Plastic knives

I just put a spoon or whatever I need for my lunch in my lunch bag. Bring it back home and stick in dishwasher.
Can’t recall last time I bought or used plastic utensils. Don’t see how using them are any easier than sticking utensils in a dishwasher.
I agree. Easy to just put in the dishwasher. I do this for myself.

But I started to use plastic utensils for my son’s lunch. It was mostly his spoons that would go missing. It’s still a mystery. But my cutlery supply was starting to dwindle. Ironically his plastic spoon always made it home. Lol.

And, I’m not sure about the rules these days, but the kids could only bring a plastic knife to school in their lunch bag if they needed it, so the plastic knives were handy.

I guess it all depends on how many people you host for holidays and birthday parties. We have at least 25 for Easter most years, so we need utensils for dinner and dessert. I have service for 14 in my everyday flatware and service for 8 in the 'good silver' from my grandma.
We have had up to 25 for Christmas, hosted wedding showers, etc. I have couple dozen in my regular drawer plus my good silverware.

Yes! Now you mention it we went though a short period back in the day with our oldest losing spoons from his lunch bag! We did send plastic spoons for a school year. Forgot about that. It was like 10-12 years ago.
We have picked up extra utensils at Ikea to supplement missing ones over the years. I don't care if the everyday stuff all match.

We run out of plastic knives more than the other utensils for maybe a silly reason.

My 16 year old autistic son HATES the noise of a metal knife scraping a plate, so he will ONLY use plastic knives when he is eating. So, we are always buying the 100 pack of knives, it feels like. My husband uses plastic forks for his work lunches and the kids use plastic spoons when they take lunch to school, but my son uses a plastic knife 1-2 times every day.

I don’t care about matching either.

This thread has reminded me that I need to pick up some everyday spoons. Spoons still go missing here and they don’t even leave the house anymore. Lol.

Reminds me that my younger kid once found a fork at school and refused to turn it in to the lost and found.
Even if it’s the last fork in the drawer I still refuse to use it.

Our flatware needs to match...we somehow ended up with one mismatched teaspoon that my DH refuses to use. He will get up and switch it, if one of the kids sets his place with it. If it's the last teaspoon, he will switch it for a matching tablespoon.

We bought an Oneida set of flatware in the 80s. I think I got two sets. But over the years, we’ve lost pieces. (idk how.) I used to be able to order them on EBay for a reasonable price, but last time I checked they wanted $16 per teaspoon and crazy prices like that. I debated getting a completely new set but I wound up finding some teaspoons that were nice in a consignment shop (for $1 each) so I got those. They’re fine for now. I’ll keep scoping out my own set and if the prices come down, I’ll buy more of those. I like my set and decided to keep it for the long haul even though replacement pieces can be hard to find at a reasonable price.

My mom has always enjoyed using plastic spoons at home. She washes and reuses them all the time. It's kinda her thing.

We keep a supply of plastic forks and spoons to pack in our work lunches. We wash and reuse them until they break. If I don't take my own plastic utensils to work, I can sometimes find some in the staff room. Usually, though, I just find a bin of...you guessed it - plastic knives!!!

BJs sells a pack of something like 150 forks, 100 spoons and 50 knives. That's not the exact number but way more forks than knives.

We do use plastic and paper when the family is over. Cooking takes enough energy out of me, I'm not going to worry about dishes too when having 15 people

And if disposables are good enough for WDW, it's good enough for me.

My MIL would have a fit if I served a family dinner with paper plates and plastic cutlery. The other DIL did it years ago and it still gets mentioned!

Well, I'm the MIL so there's one less worry in my life.

But to share a MIL story. My DH likes fried eggs. Early in our marriage, MIL was visiting and I was making breakfast. While cooking DH eggs, one of the yolks broke. MIL asked DH if I would eat the ruined eggs and make new ones for him. The answer was no and no.

I camp a lot so I have a stock of plastic utensils on hand all the time. I use either type at home.
