Plastic in Subway's Bread??

It's not plastic. It's a chemical used as a whitening agent as well as to keep bread soft. There might be issues with it as an ingredient in flour in a bakery since it can be a respiratory irritant for some people. Other than that, there's no indication that it's toxic in bread.

McDonalds shakes have Methyl Cellulose in them, a form of plastic. Just because something is technically a "plastic" doesn't mean it is somehow harmful to ingest. You'd be surprised how many plastics are in processed food. Calling it "the same as in a yoga mat" is sensationalizing.

If you're alarmed by this, don't ever research what's in common foods. Companies put tons of weird things in the foods we eat.

Bingo! This whitening agent bleaches flour in a matter of hours, as opposed to the week long natural process. This chemical creates stomach discomfort and more serious problems. Within four days of giving up all and any products that contain flour, my stomach, intestinal, and bloating issues went away. My arthritis has disappeared. Flour today is awful and dangerous. Gluten-free eating is NOT a fAD.

Ding ding ding!

The amount if processed crap in today's food is quite literally killing us, shortening our lifespans and creating reversible problems like heart disease. If we said NO to this and other kinds of chemical agents used to speed up processing time for the company bottom line, we'd be healthier.

Their sandwiches to me taste great, but I always feel off afterwards, so I've stopped going there.

They announced earlier today that they are removing the chemical from their bread…

http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/06/health/subway-bread-chemical/

"We are already in the process of removing azodicarbonamide as part of our bread improvement efforts despite the fact that it is (a) USDA and FDA approved ingredient," Subway said in a statement. "The complete conversion to have this product out of the bread will be done soon."

My nephew just got a job there so glad they are removing that chemical.

We have been eating Paleo recently (kids still eat some pasta and bread but I am weaning them slowly.)

I have felt so much better since I cut all grains. My energy is better, I have lost some weight and I don't have the brain fog I once did.

I heard a bit on Subway by Jim Gaffigan, he said instead of asking what kind of bread they should as what color since it all tastes the same. :rotfl2:

Love Jim! And his bit on working at a Mexican restaurant...hilarious.
Sorry, off topic!!

It is bringing attention to the fact that a lot of crap is in food and companies get away with it because people don't try to understand what is in their processed food.

Most of the stuff hasn't been proven as safe. The FDA has this wonderful loophole for food processors - they just tell the FDA a new ingredient is similar to one already used in food WITHOUT any proof and the FDA approves the ingredient for use in food.

Since when is eating at Subway eating healthy? I just saw a commercial for a sub with fritos on it!

I just finished reading Eat It to Beat It simply because I needed a vacation read. Plus I realize I need to eat fresher and put less crap into my body. Best part: Mens Health is pushing Haagen Das because when you look at the ingredients it is the most pure brand out there.

I was in South America last summer eating way too much fried food but I came home 5 pounds lighter solely because almost everything was fresh. And the full times I have eaten either Subway or Panera bread in the last 6 months I've had stomach issues within 2 hours.

Honestly not sure where you're getting this lifespan "data". Median lifespan has about doubled in the last 150 years and doesn't appear to be trending backwards.

Odd. Subway doesn't bother my stomach and it seems to be bothered by almost everything. I must handle the plastic well. ;)

I wouldn't call a D+ rating positive or "pushing" a brand, even with that one so-so compliment:
Häagen-Dazs doesn't provide nutritional information for the many in-house concoctions to be made from its ice cream, but if its regular soft serve and packaged ice cream (the most caloric in the supermarket) are any indication, the numbers can't be good. And the many sundaes, shakes, and cakes on offer are surefire ways to double down on the danger. The one thing we do appreciate about Häagen-Dazs is the simplicity of their recipes (just five familiar ingredients in many of their ice creams), but they'll need to adjust their sugar and cream ratios before we can proclaim this place a safe place to eat.

We have never eaten at subway. for years when we would even walk past one my daughter would say their bread smells funny!
