My mom is turning 65 on August 28, 2018. We would like to visit Walt Disney World from August 26 to August 30, 2018. Are there any Disney events during this week (ie. Epcot International Food & Wine)? Any recommendations for restaurants? I have always wanted a Disney Wedding (never happened, though) so I’m extremely excited about planning a Disney celebration for my Mom!!! I definitely want to do a dessert party!!! Please help with any suggestions!!! Perhaps any suggestions for guides I can read too to help with the planning process! I’m going to scour the disboards for tons of ideas now!!!

If they continue with the schedule they established this year, you may be there for the first MNSSHP party (SO fun!) and possibly the very beginning of F&W (it started on Aug. 31) this year.

If you want something incredibly special for dinner, look into Victoria and Albert's at Grand Floridian. I agree with gap2368 - I, too, would book the Happily Ever After dessert party in MK (we like plaza garden, but if your mom would like to sit, book the Tomorrowland Terrace one and get there early for a good table.)

I read some reviews about the MK Dessert Parties. A lot of the reviews complained about the crowds and having to get there super early to get a table or good spot to see the fireworks. What could be a solution to this? For fear of not getting a good table at Tomorrowland Terrace, I researched possibly reserving a table service dinner at Monsieur Paul’s in Epcot to watch Illuminations and requesting a table near the window. The review stated that because it is pricey restaurant we wouldn’t have to worry about crowds or table availability. Is this a smart move? Or should I strategize on how to guarantee a good table at Tomorrowland Terrace for the MK Dessert Party? Does the Tomorrowland Terrace table throw the dessert party while we are seated at the table during the fireworks show? Or do we have the dessert party first and then seated at the table later? Also, my DM said she was interested in going to a jazz lounge/restaurant featuring live entertainment. House of Blues in Disney Springs looks like the only option available but haven’t seen any thorough reviews of the restaurant on disboards.

I have done the dessert party at the MK a number of times ( have it booked for New Years Eve yehhh) I love it so much. I have only done the garden view ( you stand in the grassy area to see the fireworks) and you eat your desserts sitting at a table, up in the terrrace and then go down right before the fireworks to see them.

I would never do ( unless it was very crowded like new years eve) do anything for illumination as it is so easey to find a good spot 20-30 minutes beforehand to see them

look up dessert party there is an thread on it with pictures and all.

Thank you! Is there a Happily Ever After fireworks show during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party? It looks like the Halloween Party started around this time frame in 2017...

To explain a little further on how the MK HEA dessert parties work - there are, essentially, two parties. One is the dessert party with Tomorrowland Terrace viewing. At this party, you are seated at a table on the lower portion of the terrace and there is a dessert buffet. You have your desserts and watch the fireworks from the table you are seated at for the party. To get a good table, yes, you need to check in fairly early. Because HEA has a lot of projections and is less of a fireworks show than Wishes was, the terrace seating does not offer the best view, but it does offer a seat. The dessert party with Plaza Garden viewing is held in the same location as the terrace party - it just utilizes the upper terraces for seating and has a separate buffet line. After they've eaten dessert, guests for this party go to a reserved area in the plaza garden to watch the show. The view is better, but there are no chairs. We've done this party twice and are most likely doing it again during MVMCP in a few weeks. If you want to see HEA and want to avoid crowds, it's the way to go IMHO. The garden will not be as crowded as the general public areas and we like that we can hang out there for a while after the show to let the crowds dissipate before we attempt leaving MK. No matter how you slice it, HEA is crowded. The parties are the way to go to get out of the crowds.

Personally, I wouldn't book Monsieur Paul for Illuminations viewing. You will not have a clear view of the show. It isn't difficult to find a good spot along the lagoon to see Illuminations. If you'd like to do something special for Illuminations, however, consider the Frozen party or doing a private Illuminations cruise out of the YC boat dock.

During MNSSHP, they will have Hallowishes in the evening and you can also book a dessert party for that if you wish.

Do you need a separate ticket to stay in Magic Kingdom after 7pm when they are hosting Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party? Or will our one day park admission ticket allow us to stay until the park closes?

You need to by an extra ticket

If you don't have a party ticket (and the wristband you receive when they scan the ticket), you will be asked to leave MK when it closes.

A few things my mom and I have done over the years - dessert party for Illuminations. So much yumminess and at the time it also included Champagne. It was very nice but the only thing we didn't like was there were no chairs. It was a long time to stand.

If she's really into Disney I'd also consider the Lunch with an Imagineer event. Excellent food and great conversation in a small group setting. ( We did the lunch at Brown Derby )

Okay, so this is what I have planned so far... There are four us going to WDW: DM65, DD67, DB32, and me 35. We are staying in a Family Suite at All Star Music Resort. I’m still thinking about if we want to stay in the Jazz area or the Calypso area. Will we stick out like sore thumbs since we are in our 30s and 60s, or do a variety of ages stay here too? I’m hoping that we’ll get the Free Dining Promotion during our trip since its planned for the last week of August.

Sunday 8/26: Check into hotel at 3pm.
Head over to House of Blues in Disney Springs. The HoB website says that they have live music every afternoon in The Courtyard Bar as well as Happy Hour starting at 4pm. My mom wanted to go to a jazz club so I’m hoping this will be sufficient.

Monday 8/27: Animal Kingdom
I’m considering Flame Tree Barbecue and Yaki & Yeti Local Food Cafes for Quick Service Lunch and Dinner, not necessarily in that order. She really wants to go to the Pandora attractions. I haven’t gotten that far in my planning yet. I just know that we were considering staying in an off-site hotel until we found out we couldn’t make FP+ reservations until 30 days before instead of 60 days at the WDW resorts. I had to put together an Excel Spreadsheet to present to my DD why we should stay on-site and he picked the most affordable option which was Family Suites at All Star Music.

Tuesday 8/28 (Mom’s Birthday!): Epcot
Haven’t decided on a Quick Service Lunch Yet. I’m considering these options: Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie (France), Kringle Bakeri og Kafe (Norway), Sunshine Seas (The Land), Tangierine Cafe (Morocco), Sommerfest (Germany), or Katsura Grill (Japan).
For Table Service (Birthday!) Dinner: I have decided to watch the Illuminations Show in Epcot since we don’t want to buy additional tickets for Hallowishes. I’m seriously considering booking an ADR for Spice Road Table (Morocco) so we can sit on the outdoor patio to have a sit down dinner and watch Illuminations. Does this sound like a good idea? I’m not considering Rose & Crown for ADR to view Illuminations because my DM is a flight attendant and has been to London hundreds upon hundreds of times over the last forty years. Are there any other restaurants in Epcot with table seating on a patio that can view Illuminations?

Wednesday 8/29: Magic Kingdom
Quick Service Lunch: Be Our Guest Restaurant (The Unofficial Guide says the restaurant has a QS option)
Quick Service Dinner: Columbia Harbor House (I really want to have a lobster roll.) What are some attractions at MK that adults would enjoy there? We do not want to go to Disney Hollywood Studios since half the park is closed due to construction including two restaurants. It doesn’t make sense for us to buy tickets and not be able to enjoy the entire park.

Thursday 8/30: Departure

Your plans sound great! Not a restaurant...but have you considered a speciality cruise to view Illuminations? Snacks and soft drinks are provided but you can book other food, champagne, cake, even a full dinner through the private dining menu. You can have the boat decorated for the birthday. The cruise leaves from the Yacht Club so it would be convenient for your Epcot day. I believe the price is $349 plus tax and food would be extra.

I reserved the vacation package this morning!!! So excited!!! I tried to reserve on the Disney website but it said that the suite was not available. So feeling very discouraged (because this could make or break our celebration) I called Walt Disney Travel Company to see if they could help. They were able to reserve the suite! And $200 less than what was quoted on the website to boot! And we also got the Memory Maker! I like how our Cast Member said at the end of the call, “Have a Magical Day!” Feeling delighted, I went to the mall food court in my hometown this afternoon for lunch and ordered a cheesesteak. After the server handed me my lunch tray I chirped, “Have a magical day!” ... um, yeah, not quite the same effect. I was given a blank stare.

Anyway, I believe that the Illuminations Cruise would not fit in our budget unfortunately. DM has shown interest in going to one of the restaurants in the Animal Kingdom Lodge. She wants to tour the hotel and see the animals in the savanna. She wanted to stay at this hotel originally but it is WAY out of our budget. I was thinking we could have dinner at one of the AKL’s restaurants and then take a tour of the hotel after we spend our day in the Animal Kingdom Theme Park on Monday. And perhaps go back the Animal Kingdom afterwards to see the Pandora lights? I heard Pandora is aesthetically pleasing at night.

I’m happy that I reserved the room now because I was about a week behind in planning. Next I have to get trip insurance since our trip is planned during Hurricane Season. I read that a good place for trip insurance is Insure My Trip.

Have A Magical Day!
