Planning a trip to Montreal

Diskids2, just a quick suggestion for you...........

When you are trying to get around downtown, or the city for that matter, take the Metro system as much as possible. There is construction all over the city.

Whether it's road construction, repairs, building construction, whatever............
the traffic and roads are not good.....

With the Metro system, you will by pass that and save yourself some time and money (expensive taking taxis's these days).

Most places that you are going to are accessible by Metro.

If I think of anything else, will let you know!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion...we weren't planning on renting a car anyway and I'm going to get two of the 3 day metro passes.

I do have a question....since we are going for 9 days, I was hoping to get some laundry done mid-trip (too spoiled by convenient Disney self laundry services!). The hotel does have a laundry service but it is very pricey. Does anyone know of any laundromats or laundry services that would pick up at the Sheraton?

Hello again,

The reason I mentioned the traffic and using the Metro system because in one of your past posts, you mentioned sometimes using taxis. You will have some steep fares if you get stuck in construction traffic.

As for laundry services, I really am not familiar with any downtown.
I did a quick search with google and came up with the following.

http://www.reseau411.ca/en/buanderie-albert/E57450

You would have to walk up to Ste Catherine and make a left hand turn. It is on the opposite side of the street between Fort Street & Chomedy.

I do know that there is a dry cleaner on Saint Mathieu & de Maisonneuve. If you look on the map for Buanderie Albert, you will notice that Saint Mathieu is one strret after Rue Guy and a few streets before Fort. De Maisonnuve is one street past Ste-Catherine.

Both the dry cleaner and the Baunderie are near (ish) the Guy-Concordia Metro station.

Hope this helps!

I'm heading to Montreal around the same time. I've got a swimmer competing from the 25-31. The rest of my family are just coming for the weekend. I hadn't done much planning yet so I've been absorbing every detail. What luck to run into this thread. Thank you!

Your welcome! Good luck to your swimmer! Have a great trip...

I'm off to check that out! Janna, you have helped me so much! I really appreciate it.....its so helpful when these questions are answered ahead of time!

Just looked up the Laundromat info. Looks like a close enough spot. Thanks again! Nice to know I can pack alittle less! We just booked our ride to Penn Station in NY too. We are being picked up at 5:45 am! I love starting my trips with an early start....I wonder how my kids will feel about that!

My daughter's bf is a HUGE Indiana Jones fan, so we have that on our schedule already.. Thanks so much for letting me know though!

Just a little update - I actually saw the exhibit this past weekend and it was great! It took us nearly 3 hours to get through the entire thing, if you stop and look at every little thing (which we like to do). There is also a bit of interactive stuff to do - I won't spill the beans but it was fun to do. Enjoy your trip!

GREAT! I am going to be pre-booking our must do's and that is on the list! Thank you for the info regarding how long it took....I have the whole morning set out for it! We can't wati!

Diskids2,

Just thought of something..... you mentioned maybe going to Schwartz to eat. Don't go there if it is raining, it is a very small restaurant and the line-up is outside. There isn't much room for people to wait inside. It's and in and out kinda place. I was so surprised when I went there. It really is tiny.

You can see a picture here: http://www.schwartzsdeli.com/index_fr.html

Were you plannning to watch the fireworks (from somewhere other than laronde)? If so, you can watch them off the same pier where the Science Centre is. They are on Saturday nights at 10pm. Not sure what time the Science Centre closes. You could also walk down to the river anywhere in the Old Port and should be able to see them. You won't be able to see the fireworks that are closer to the water only the ones up in the sky.

So far our weather has been good this month. Lots of sun and right now it's really, really hot. good visiting weather!

We plan on going to Schwartz when we do a shopping/walking tour in that area...I sure hope its not raining that day! If it is...we'll re-group! I plan on being in Old Montreal on a Wed. night when the fireworks will be going off. I was wondering where to view them...good idea for the pier. We are going to La Ronde, but the next day....I sort of used my WDW planning strategies and thought it would be less crowded the day after the fireworks competition! Good to know about the weather!

You can pick up en Entertainment book for Montreal for about 15$. It will more than pay for itself with the food and attraction discount coupons in it. I'm a local and I get the book most years. www.entertainment.com

I just purchased the Entertainment book...found at least two restaurants we were going to try...20% off up to $25. I had to order two (2), but they were only $5 each!

I also found two 15% off coupons for stores and (looks like) fast food at Quays. We will be in Old Montreal for two days, so I printed them out...you never know!

Awhile back I saw a coupon for Univers Toutou, but they don't have it on the website anymore. I know my 20 year old DD will stop in that shop!

If anyone can think of anything else I should explore discount wise, let me know!

1) The lobby of your hotel might have tourist information and phamplets.

2) Montreal Tourism Office. I am sure you have the info already but just in case you don't. The first one is within walking distance of your hotel.

Infotouriste Centre
1255 Peel Street
Suite 100
(corner of Sainte-Catherine Street West)
Peel

Tourist Welcome Office in Old Montréal
174 Notre-Dame Street East

Also wanted to let you know that the crew from The Today Show was in town yesterday. Yesterdays show as live from the Old Port and they taped todays show as well. You might find something on it interesting (I haven't seen the shows).

I'm not sure if you saw the website for Old Montreal? Here is the link just in case you haven't:

http://www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/eng/accueila.htm

Here is a map of the Old Port:

http://www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/images/pdf/loc_3a.pdf

You will see that there is a walkway along most of the waterfront. To see the fireworks, you can stand anywhere along the walkway or on the ends of the piers. You should have a good view. If you enlarge the map a bit and look on the right side of the map, you will see where it says Place de l'Horloge (Clock Tower) and an arrow pointing to the right. If you follow that pathway, you will be closer to the fireworks. - One time we walked down to the "Clock Tower" and found that there is pathway to a little "garden area" where you can watch the fireworks very well. Can't give you the directions as we only were there once. You should be able to see it from the side of the tower. Just a word of warning - be early if you want a good spot.

------------------------------

Was wondering if you knew about the dinner boat rides on the river. If not, check out the video at this link (bottom left corner):

Not sure if anyone suggested visiting the following while you are in Old Montreal.

It is absolutely beautiful...

Next week is coming up fast! :yay:
