We are flying with Virgin next March (me, DH and 3 DD ages 11, 9 and 7). Am I right in thinking that we can sort out our seats in advance? If we are able to do this, where would anyone suggest we ask to sit?

Hi you can pre allocate your seats 180 days in advance so if you call reservations in a couple of weeks you will be set! as for seating arrangements i am unsure as i have always just sat with family or friends at the window seats so with children i am unsure whats best i am sure theres plenty of others who could recommend something :)

Where to sit is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' type question, but as a veteran Virgin flier, I'll help you out as best I can.

As someone who usually travels solo or with other adults, I've always gone for emergency exit (EE) seats whenever possible. These give you the advantage of vastly more legroom, and the ability to just forward step out of your seat when necessary and not clamber over/force other people to get up. This goes for any plane of course, not just virgin, it's just more relevant/important for long haul flights such as to Orlando.

The problem with this for you is that kids cannot be seated in emergency exit seats. However, as I recall, certain EE seats on 747's are located along side the 4-wide middle seats on 747's. This could be a good option for you.

If you do want to go for EE seats, as these cannot be pre-booked, the only way to get them is to get to the airport extra early, I'd say at least 3 - 3.5 hours before take off time, to ensure you get first dibs by being first in the book-in queue. It might seem a pain, but believe me, it's worth it, especially if anyone in your party is tall, and airports now have plenty of stuff to entertain the rugrats !

I'm encountering this exact problem myself for the first time this Chrimbo as I'm going to Disney with my lady and her two boys 12 & 10, and using BA for the first time ever to fly to the USA (Big saving on flights and better dates available) so we'll be there even earlier than usual to get this sorted !

I'd also advise this might be a good idea as Virgin seem to be using the older 747's in it's fleet for the Orlando run these days, and if anything the room is that bit tighter.

If you dont want to go that way, then bulkhead seats are your next best alternative. Bulk head seats are all those facing one of the utility/crew areas in the passenger area of the plane. These usually give a little more than normal legroom, which could make the difference between comfort and being unable to walk other than like a wounded duck when you arrive in Disneyville ! ;)

As you're a party of five, you are going to have to have at least one person sitting across an aisle from the main group, even if you go for the middle set of 4 seats for the bulk of you. The advantage to that is you get 3 aisle seats, so some judicious rearranging mid-flight should enable everyone to keep their legs moving !

I cant give you specific seat numbers and locations, but this marvellous website can !!

http://www.seatmap.com

Believe it or not, if you enter the date, airline and number of your flight, this site can give you a plan of the plane you are flying on and show you what seats are booked/available, so you can actually choose the specific seats you want if need be !!

It seems to be very accurate - I called BA to book seats together as our flight is at a busy time and wanted to be sure we'd all be together in case the EE seat plan falls apart, and later in the day, when I checked on the plan for our flight, the seats we were allocated were now showing as taken when previously they had been available !

I hope this is a help to you. If you need any other advice/info, feel free to ask here or post me a private message !

Great site !

One thing confuses me though

When I rang BA to book our seats some time ago (we're traveling with 2 young children) I was told only 25% were preallocated so they wouldn't allocate us seats together ....yet. So how can 90% of the seats be 'reserved' already - including bulkhead seating ? Are they just arbitrary seat numbers ? ie just reflecting the number of seats sold ? Or are they where BA are planning on seating people ?

Tracey,

This upcoming trip will be the first time I've flown BA to the US, so I can't tell you any more about how they allocate seats than you already know.

All I can tell you is that I booked our tickets online on 16th July, and as I recall, I called them within a day or two to pre-book our 4 seats together, and it was done there and then without a problem. We are flying out on Boxing day, so thats just over 5 months from booking, and within the 180 days period that I know Virgin use as the earliest date from which you can call to pre-book seats. However, I dont know if BA use the same timetable.

Also, you're right, the plan displayed on Seatmap.com is effectively a direct feed from the airlines own booking system, so it will reflect both seats sold as well as specific seat allocations requested by customers. If 90% of the seats on a flight are sold, then the plan will show that, and it probably does show the seats the airline would like you to sit in.

On lightly booked flights they do sometimes have to scatter passengers about the plane to even out weight distribution for take off and landing. Thats why they ask you to stay in your allocated seat till in the air, then let you grab whatever seats you want.

Another thing that I think you have to consider is that you will on occasion get a booking clerk who, for whatever reason, simply cant be bothered to help you out ! Sad but true IMO. If you get one in a good mood, no problem - if however you get one who had a row before leaving home, got rained on, then stepped in a pile of dog-poo on the way to the office, well, you'd probably be lucky to get allocated a seat in the cargo bay !!

I can only suggest trying a few times more with BA, and you might get lucky and come across the clerk who found Miss or Mr Right the night before... ;)

Good luck !!

I'm quite lucky, DB works for BA and can check the actual BA booking system for me. It appears our flight is full (and over sold) on the way over in WT & WT+ with only a couple of seats left to sell in Club World & First (and that's including over booked seats!)

Not much chance of us getting upgraded as we're travelling with children but I really don't want to be split up from them ! There's only 36 seats in WT+ and only 4 rows of 4 :(

Tried the Seatmap site a couple of times....I keep getting a message stating " Option not available at present ".

...Anyone tell me why? Our flight is late November so it's not like it's in the far and distant future.

Mind you when I rang to reserve our seats with BA ( 3 & 1 ) I was given row/seat numbers but told " They might not be those seats when you get to the airport " What's that about !?
