Pizza delivery charge?!

Why, hello. As a Pizza Hut Manager, perhaps I can weigh in with some info. I'm not sure where your stats came from, but I will speak purely from my experience with my store--which is the same as all 46 owned by our franchise.

Yes, we did recently raise our delivery fee from $1.50 to $2.00. Our drivers used to receive $1 for each delivery they took, and now receive $1.50. This is per order as well on our part...not per run, as someone posted above. So a driver with two deliveries at one time would receive $3 from us, plus whatever tips they were given.

We do keep 50 cents per $2 fee charged to offset the costs of delivery incurred by our store-- for example, this pays to purchase new delivery bags, warmers, car toppers, etc. and covers the additional insurance needed to cover our drivers. (Our stores that do not offer delivery do not have these costs, and any delivery-store must pay for these costs from delivery fees itself)

At the end of each driver's shift, they are paid by us for each delivery they were dispatched on that shift. Many customers feel that $1.50 is sufficient tip, and do not tip our drivers any additional tip. Many customers do tip additionally and it is greatly appreciated by our drivers. If a customer questions our $2 fee, I will give them the same information as above--and let them know that the tip is up to them--just as is tipping in our dining room.

Again, I offer the disclaimer that I do not know the stats being quoted by the OP, I am just letting you know what is the case at our 46 Pizza Huts that I can vouch for :goodvibes .

Thank you :) I will formally rescend my complaint about Pizza Hut then. Given that the info I found was online from various articles, websites, wikipedia, etc., I should remember that the business world is always changing and sometimes information is no longer up to date, or even accurate to start with. It does make me feel better to know I can order from Pizza Hut with my bleeding heart for the "poor worker" intact :teeth: (I admit I'm a softy, what can I say...)

I ordered pizza from Papa John's last Saturday and they charged $1.00 for a delivery fee. I still tipped the driver $3 (and he was VERY appreciative). It cost $20 total for a large specialty pizza but it was nice not having to drive somewhere and get some food. And the pizza was great as usual!!

My DH used to manage a PH for a large franchise here in IN and that is basically how they did it. Though I can't remember if the driver got $1 or $1.50 (he's asleep so I can't ask).

And let me tell ya, that insurance for delivery is EXPENSIVE!!! I worked in the office of the franchise (not PH) that DH was a partner of, so I got to see first hand the cost of doing business. And that was 12 years ago- I'd hate to see what those bills are like now! If people knew what it actually cost to run a business like this, then they might understand better. :)

Where we live:

Pizza Hut charges- and I have to admit, we have been tipping less with the (mis)understanding that the fee was for the delivery (and thus was part of the driver's compensation).

Papa John's does not charge- However, there are always a few "pick-up" only specials.

Dominos- does not charge, does not taste very good!

I wish we had chinese delivery...that would be fantastic!

When we lived in NYC...we had everything delivered- mexican, thai, greek.

I'd be willing to pay a FIVE dollar delivery fee if someone would delivery me some good thai in the middle of rural ohio!

We order pizza hut 2 or 3 times a month and never been charged a delivery fee. and if I were I would have assumed untill now it went to the driver.

We live out in the middle of nowhere. We have a Pizza Hut and a Cappy's pizza (local mom and pop place) that will deliver to us. We also have a couple of pizza places in town that don't deliver out this far. I know Cappy's charges a fee for delivery (can't remember what it is right now) No idea about Pizza Hut b/c no one wants to eat their pizza. :) Cappy's is awesome so we get it and if it's not convenient to pick it up we have it delivered. We do tip a couple of dollars in addition to the fee. I don't even think about the fee anymore, I just consider it "part of the price of the pizza."
Karen,

You just had to bring up Cappy's again, you are making us want to plan a mini dis meet your way just to try this pizza. hahahah
