Hello!

We are traveling to Disney World next week with the school band. Our kids are both marching and dh and I are both chaperoning. My daughter and I both have food allergies and the Special Diets people have been less than helpful with the allergy sheets information.

I am wondering if any one can tell me if the pizza at Pizafari in Animal Kingdom is soy free?

We will spend half a day at Animal Kingdom, then move on to Epcot where they have a 3 hour workshop right at lunch time. The adults have time in the park, where I am fine to get lunch, but thinking that the kids should eat before their workshop means lunch at Animal Kingdom which doesn't look very friendly for my daughter who has soy/all nut allergies and will be pressed for time. I'm not sure I can convince her to take the time to go to Rainforest Cafe for a sit down lunch when we are only there for a total of 3 hours, knowing that would be her safest choice.

Any help?

I can't tell you if their regular pizza is soy-free, but I can tell you their gluten-free pizza is not. It's Amy's brand, and they use soybean oil in it :sad2:. Now, that said, the antipasto salad and chicken caesar salad most likely are soy-free, but you would want to be sure to check. Watch out for the dressing (as I'm sure you already know...). The oil they cook with is canola oil, not soybean oil (thank goodness from a soy-allergy standpoint... but it's still not great) so most likely your best bet is to go with the salad without dressing (or lemon on the side to use). Or maybe even do what I do and bring your own oil/vinegar blend.

I think it depends on if your allergy allows you to have soy oil (as mentioned by PP).

One CS option that was safe when we went is the Amy's Mac and Cheese at Restaurantosaurus. It's not on the menu, but it's one of their allergy options. Taste wise it's just okay. I also got the "kid sides" of grapes and carrots.

Otherwise, can she pack something?

She doesn't have to be gluten free (I do).. so that's good to know, but we both are soy free. I figured I'd have ZERO luck at Animal Kingdom so I wasn't planning on even trying. The hard part about packing something to take, is that while our hotel has a kitchenette.. we are vehicle-less and not able to hit up a local market. We are also staying outside of the park, so it's one of those situations where if *I* were planning this vacation it would be so much better.. but alas we are at the will of the school band and it's giving me so much grief and worry I can't tell you.

I was able to get the allergy friendly chicken tenders at Restaurantosaurus. They took a little while though cause they had to bake them. The oil had soy. This was back in March of 2011.

One option is to get groceries from Garden Grocer- they're a grocery delivery service and they do a great job. They'll deliver right to your hotel, and if for some reason you're not there, they'll leave it at bell services in their big fridges that they have and you can pick it up from them.

If you don't want to do grocery delivery, you can do what I had to do for Las Vegas last weekend- pack as MUCH as you possibly can in your checked bag (if you have one) and your carry on bag (we have a huge soft-side cooler that still is small enough to fit under the seat in front of us that works out great for travel). We packed tons of fruit (apples, oranges, pears, some cut up for the plane, some not), thin rice noodles (they soften with hot water- you can get gallon jugs of water at the DVC convenience stores for pretty cheap-ish and heat up water in a mug or bowl in the microwave, or bring an electric tea kettle. We had them with coconut oil (from a small 3-1-1 size container), peppers, and seasonings like garlic powder, salt and pepper- delish!), Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal (also cooks in hot water and added chopped nuts, fruit, and cinnamon/salt/sugar that I brought from home), nuts, Enjoy Life bars and larabars, veggies (like carrots, avocado, peppers, cucumbers cut up in plastic containers for the flight, or whole for later in the trip), Udi's bread with little packets of Justin's almond butter (packets in my 3-1-1 bag), cereal (got milk at the resort- a small container was shared between the two of us)... things like that. The small things like the rice noodles and bread can be packed in ziplocks and stuffed in between clothes in your luggage. I looked like a sherpa with all of our food, but hey, when you have food allergies, you do what you gotta do! And the TSO's didn't question me one bit- all of that food was in my hand carry luggage :lmao: I wouldn't hesitate to do it again, either. I froze some grapes before I left home to use as 'ice packs' in the cooler, and once I got through security I filled up some big gallon size ziplocks with ice I got from Starbucks (after buying my water for the flight). It always works out great for us, but certainly takes some planning.

Now, all of that was for Vegas. At WDW, it's much easier to eat out because they cater to so many different types of allergies. If you can track down a CS restaurant (I'm sure AK has one) that carries Amy's Mac and Cheese, you can't go wrong with that. Gluten free and soy free... and OH.SO.GOOD. The link below has some information about gluten and soy free dining at WDW (our last trip there) that might help, too.

My DD11 is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, soy and bananas. She was able to eat the pizza at Pizza Safari(is that what it is called?or Pizzafari??) in AK. The chef made hers in a special area and it was handled special going directly from him to our food tray although I do not remember if it was "different" pizza or just specially handled....????. If I remember correctly, it may have had soybean oil and/or soy lecithin but neither of these contain the protein so it was safe for her. It was not virgin pressed or expellar pressed soybean oil....just the typical highly refined version. HTH:goodvibes

We don't avoid soy, so I can't answer your exact question. We did have a very helpful manager at Pizzafari look through the ingredient binder with us and help us make a dairy free pizza.

Would Flame Tree BBBQ work for a soy allergy? BBQ usually works for us since it's just meat and seasonings, but again I'm not a soy expert. We got a delicious meal of chicken, ribs, fries, watermelon, pineapple, and Enjoy Life choc chip cookies.

If you're still unsure, I would stick with the allergy chicken tenders at Restaurantsaurus (sp?).
