I will be in Pittsburgh this weekend to visit friends from Pitt and for my college roommate's 25th wedding anniversary. I'm getting my hair cut in Shadyside at noon on Saturday and then have the afternoon to myself. I'd like to find somewhere to watch the Penn State (I know, I know -- but my son goes there) vs. Notre Dame game. Are there any good sports bars that you'd recommend? Also, what's the best mall for clothes shopping?

TIA,
Edie

This has been awhile, but we watched football at a sports bar down by the water once when we were killing time in Pitts. It was very nice, and each table had a tv at the table and you could watch any game you want. (Are they all like this? I'm probably sounding stupid, but I don't hang out in sports bars.)

I'll check on what that shopping area is called if you need me to. I don't remember off hand, but there was a hotel and a nice restaurant and some shops down by the river.

I'd like a few suggestions along that line too; while I'll be packing my disguise (Steelers t-shirt), I may have a need to watch some Twins or Vikings...

Station Square would be a good place to go shopping. And it also has a couple of "sports oriented" bars in there as well as some good restaurants. Plus it isn't too far from downtown Pittsburgh.

Shadyside, where you are getting your hair cut, has some good shopping as well with specialty shops. There is a bar there, I believe called Docs, that I used to go to when I was in college. It is frequented by the college crowd there, so getting the Penn State game on in a bar that is frequented by many PITT students may not be a good idea.

Where will you be staying at?

at the Wyndham. Thankfully, not on my dime!

Thanks for any info. I was thinking that Station Square might be the place to go.

Another place to try would be the South Side Works. I've heard good things about it, but haven't been there myself.

You could also try the Waterfront, which is near Sandcastle, but they have alot of different stuff there from restaurants to shopping.

This is probably Ref's, down by Station Square, which was mentioned in another posting. It's a beautiful little boutique mall, with all kinds of restaurants, bars and shops. It's easily accessible by public transportation (take a bus downtown and catch the T, our version of the subway, to the Station Square stop).

You could also Google "sports bars Pittsburgh Pennsylvania" and find dozens. There are plenty of Penn State fans around, so that won't be a problem.

Clothes shopping at malls? Well, there's Ross Park Mall in the north, the Waterfront (most likely to have a sports bar), Robinson Town Centre (which has a mall and several shopping areas), and many others. Ask for directions at the desk where you're staying.
