Pin Trading

I'm new to collecting pins (a dangerous habit) and I love it! But I have a few questions. I have just a plain black lanyard which i'm keeping all my Nightmare Before Christmas and Halloween pins on but there's nothing hanging off of the bottom, just the silver loop. Everytime I see people with their lanyard in the parks they have something hanging off the end; do I buy something special to hang off the end?

And how does the pin trading work exactly? Any help or tips would be great! I saw people with huge books with thousands of pins at DTD and it was amazing!!!

The card hanging at the bottom of the lanyard came with it. I must have bought it somewhere at WDW. It's been so long I don't remember exactly where I got mine.

As far as trading, if you see something you like, ask the person if they're interested in trading! Have you tried the CMs? That was my first trade.
