Pin Trading???

I know DS3 is too little to start pin trading, but it got me thinking...at what age do most kids start?

My DS9 bought a lanyard and pins on our trip last summer. He had to use his own spending money so he was very particular about which pins he would buy/trade. It was a great experience for him.

My DS started his pin collection at age 4 but was really into it last year at age 5. He traded all over WDW last July. He had a great time doing it. He is probably interested at a young age because his DS13 has been collecting for a long time. She mostly collects and doesn't like to trade. DS6 loves to trade!

Do they sell child sized lanyards or are all lanyards the same size? We are going to start pin trading this year with our boys, 5 and 7. They learned about pins on our last day at WDW last year. Do they go up to CM's and ask to trade? Does the child get to pick one from the CM or does the CM give them a pin and then they trade? Does the child then give the CM one of their pins or does the CM get to pick one from the child?

In case you already didn't know...make sure your kids seek out CM's wearing green lanyards as they can only trade with children.

My DS4 (almost 5) has just started pin trading. He's still having some trouble with the concept of trading. He wants to keep all the pins for himself. I've found that pin trading is very very addicting (for me not my son). I've started buying pins on ebay to stockpile for the next trip. I think I've solved the wanting to keep them all to himself thing by buying princess pins. He won't mind trading those away. The lanyards are a bit big for him so we tied a knot it the back of his to shorten it.

My DD had just turned 3 when she started... we only let her trade with CMs and she LOVED it. She still pulls out her lanyard on a regular basis to look at all of her pins... we purchased about 8 pins from Dizpins before we left at $3.00 a piece which made it more affordable. I think we only bought 1 extra when we were in WDW... She traded for some really cute pins. We did buy her a kids lanyard when we got to wdw... I think it was arounf 8 or $10.

...I bought my DS the Cars lanyard/pin set and ONLY let him trade with CMs. He got a big kick out of it and by the end of the trip would go running up to them and yell , "Wanna trade with me?"

My little guy was (and still is) really verbal and enjoys talking to anybody--so maybe if your child is shy or doesn't talk a lot it might not work out so well. I just know that the pin trading was an extra fun little thing for us on our trip last September.

Yes they do make kid sized lanyards... Your child can go up to the CM and ask to trade... then your child can pick any pin off of the CMs lanyard and can trade any pin off of their lanyard... It is up to your child what pin he would like to trade when trading with the CM. My kids loved going to the Pin Station in WL... we went every morning and you are allowed to make up to 2 trades from a book... it usually had TONS of pins in it. Very fun!

Just an add on to my earlier post...the CM's were fabulous with my son about pin trading and were so patient with him. They also gave him good advice about what pins he should look for and which of his he shouldn't be trading away because they were more valuable. I didn't know that about the green lanyards. Thanks for the tip.

and they loved pin trading.

We purchased starter sets on ebay before we left and they were too long. I just tied a knot in the back and they were fine.

As for trading with a CM.. you ask to see their pins, say, "I would like to trade for that one" and give them any one of yours. They get new pins every day and aren't attached to them at all. Start off with some inexpensive small ones and trade up.

My very shy 5 year old was so fun to watch when he marched up to the CMs to discuss pins. It is hard though after a few days and they like all the ones they have.

When we went in May my DS 5 (he'll be six in Sept.), got the pin trading buzz. I had read about it on here and thought he might like it, so I bought him some pins at the Disney Store when they had them clearanced. HE HAD A BALL!!!! He would see a CM and go up to them and say "Can I look at your pins?" Then when he found what he wanted he would say "I'll trade you my ___ for your ____". It was too cute! He also got the Tinkerbell Year of a Million Dreams pin. He was super excited about that and gave the pin he was to share to his Aunt (she's 30) b/c she was really getting in to it as well!!

I bought him the blue castle lanyard and it is long on him but he just sees that as it being able to hold more pins. Everytime I turned around his aunt or Nana were buying him new pins!

One funny thing about the pin trading is my DD 2 really got in to it too! Everytime her brother went to trade a pin she was saying "I need to trade too"! One of the CM's gave her a DVC button w/Goofy on it (we all got one too) and she decided it could be traded too, so she would say "I need trade my Goofy too - like brudder (brother)". The last day that we were in the parks I found her a kid sized lanyard that was pink and she was in hog heaven with her Goofy button on it. The kid sized ones were $5 and they had pink & blue.

Just an FYI for anybody that has a Publix grocery store near them, they have Princess pins from Disney there. There are two different 2 packs where there are 2 pins in each -- one is Ariel & Belle and the other is Cinderella & Snow White. These pins are $7.99. And then they had 1 pin that was all the princesses (Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine and I think some others) it is $6.99. They have the black Mickey rubber head backs and are super cute!!

My dd 4 & 6 had a ball pin trading in November. My advice is to get ones they don't care too much about so they will trade.
I haven't seen child size lanyard. We tied a knot in the back. I would love to find child size so if someone can tell be where to get them I would appreciate it!

I got my DD's child size pink lanyard from the souvenir cart in front of Dumbo. They had pink & blue and were $5.00

We actually just purchased our youngest one (2 yrs) her lanyard with a couple of pins on our last trip. She reaaly enjoyed wearing it since all her brothers and sisters had one! A couple of CM's gave her pins also My older ones got into it when they we about 5 and really enjoy trading at that age!

Just returned from our first trip with DS5. In doing research, the pin trading sounded like something he would enjoy. What a hit ! I ended up wearing the lanyard most of the week but he was all about spying the CM lanyards. "Hey dad, that girl has pins !"

Not only was he able to trade the set I purchased ahead of time on Ebay, a CM at our resort gift shop saw he was a Buzz fan and gave him a pin as we were paying for some souveniers for the folks back home. All in a all, a really neat experience that helped to pull him into the Disney experience from day one.

We just got back and our kids had a ball trading. I bought a lot of 100 pins from ebay. I meant for them to all be traded, but we wound up keeping several of them. DD12 traded for Pooh characters and the villans. DD10 and DD6 traded for the princesses and DS4 just traded to trade. At one point I think he had 4 of the exact same one (Davy Jones) and he was perfectly happy with that. I traded for Tinkerbell pins and DH traded for pins the kids and I would like. We each bought a few while we were there, and a friend who is a cast member plopped down about 30 pins on the dinner table while we were eating. We also had a few cast members hand pins to the kids and not take any in trade (mainly to DD10 on her birthday and again on our last day when we had already packed up the lanyards, but the kids were still looking at cast members lanyards. We wound up coming home with over 150 pins between the 6 of us.

I highly recommend going the ebay route. I got 100 pins for $211. Way cheaper than what they sell in the parks. For the most part, we only traded with cast members, although there were a couple of times we traded with other guests.
