We usually have Pillsbury Grands Cinnamon Rolls on Christmas morning. We did a trial run on Thanksgiving morning thanks to my husband thinking we usually have them then too.:)
So anyway, they tasted like something was missing. Even with all that gooey frosting. Has anyone ever done anything to them to doctor them up?:confused3

For me, it's more what I have WITH them... like a really good French roast coffee.

That said, I have a friend who sprinkles a little vanilla extract on hers.

hmmm...DH and DD14 eat them for breakfast almost every saturday, and they haven't said anything about them tasting different. i just spread all the frosting on them and serve. i'd never thought about putting anything else on them, but now i'm intrigued.

If they're not "cinnamony" enough, try sprinkling some cinnamon on top ---- I do that with my apple/cinnamon oatmeal all the time.

I've had them recently, too, and they just didn't taste like they used to. Seemed like too much roll and not enough cinnamon and way too much "gooey frosting".

I think they taste different ever since they changed them to the Cinnabon brand. I liked them better before.

I think that there are two kinds - with the regular frosting and with the cream cheese flavored icing.

Maybe you bought the opposite one last time?

Edit: went to the Pillsbury site and there are many different varieties - your store may not carry them all. You can still buy Grands (some places) that are not the Cinnabon type.

I make a very easy mini cinnamon roll recipe using Pillsbury Crescent Rolls - very yummy

Take one roll of crescent rolls and roll out into a sheet of dough, spread 2 tbsp softened butter on the dough, mix together 2 tbsp sugar & 1-2 tsp of cinnamon, sprinkle on dough. Roll up dough from the long side. Cut into mini rolls - maybe 20-24 rolls. Put into round pan that has been sprayed with no stick spray (I like Bakers Joy for my baked good). Bake for about 15-18minutes (check to make sure they are nicely, lightly, browned). While baking, mix together 3/4 cup of confectioners sugar with half n half - until consistency that you can drip slowly from a spoon. You may also add a bit of vanilla extract to the icing, if you wish. When you pull out the baked rolls, take spoonfuls of icing and drizzle on hot cinnamon rolls. Eat warm - yumm!

This. I actually get CONFUSED :confused3 trying to buy cinnamon rolls these days. Most likely, you picked up a kind with a slightly different icing than you're used to. The only solution-- buy all the different kinds and systematically "test" which ones you like :lmao:. It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it :thumbsup2! --Katie

I use the Rhodes cinn rolls that you can find in the frozen section in a bag. Make a glaze the night before.

In a sauce pan melt 1 stick butter. Mix in 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar and 3 tablespoons honey. Combine over low heat until well blended.

Pour glaze in 13x9 pan. Sprinkle with chopped pecans. place 12 frozen rolls in pan. spray with non-stick spray and cover with saran wrap. Leave on counter over night. In the morning they will have doubled in size. Bake at 375* for 15mins. But be careful..they can burn easy so check often. Let set for approx 8-10 mins. Flip them over in plate and place extra glaze from pan on rolls. Then spread the cream cheese frosting that comes with the rolls on them.

OMG....soooo good.

Very easy and you get them ready the night before. We bake them while opening presents and then breakfast is ready with minimal mess...although there is usually a mess from all the unwrapping of presents! Enjoy and Merry Christmas!:santa:

If anyone has a Hy-vee near them, the Hy-vee brand of frozen cinnamon rolls is excellent. Around $4.00 (I buy them on sale for less) for a dozen and has 2 big bags of frosting. These cook up really big and nice. I am going to make mine Saturday and carry them in a cake pan with lid to my mom's house. We will warm them up Sunday morning and put frosting on them after they are warm. We also do this when we go camping.

This sounds fantastic! I have a spare tube of crescent rolls and am eyeing them for a midday snack now

We do something very similar, though I found it hard to find the frozen rolls this year. Finally found them at Wal-Mart of all places.

Anyway, we use them to make "cheater" Cinnamon Yummies (which they used to serve at the Boardwalk Bakery). Here's the whole recipe from allears.net, but with the Rhodes rolls, we just do the pan smear and "cheat" with the frozen rolls. Yum!

Recipe
Cinnamon Yummies
BoardWalk Bakery
Yield: Serves 4

For the sweet dough:

3/4 cup flour
2-1/4 cups bread flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon powdered milk
3/4 teaspoon salt
6-1/2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 package dry active yeast (1/4 oz.)
2 eggs
1/2 cup water

Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl and stir until combined. Turn the dough out onto work surface and knead until soft and elastic, about 10 minutes. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit 30 minutes.

For the pan smear:

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons butter, softened
6 tablespoons light brown sugar
1-1/2 tablespoons cinnamon
1-1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 cup light corn syrup

While the sweet dough rests, prepare the pan smear. Cream together butter, sugar, cinnamon, and flour in a medium bowl. Add the corn syrup and mix well until blended. Spread into bottom of a 9- by 9-inch baking pan. Set aside.

For the filling:

1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 egg, beaten

Place the sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl and stir with a fork until well mixed. Set aside.

When the dough is ready, roll it out into a rectangle about 6 by 12 inches and ½ thick. Brush the dough with the beaten egg and sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Starting with the short end, roll the dough into a log shape, keeping it tight. Seal the edge by pinching the dough together. Slice the roll into four pieces and place them in the pan on top of the smear. Cover with plastic and let rise until doubled, about 1½ to 2 hours.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until a deep golden brown. Let cool for 5 minutes, then invert onto a large plate and serve immediately.

DH loves cinnamon buns, so I've been making my own using our bread maker. One thing I have noticed is that my cinnamon bun recipe calls for 1 tsp. ground nutmeg in the dough (it is a large recipe, with 3 3/4 c. flour), which seems to perk up the cinnamon in the filling.

Melt 1/4 cup butter, add 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 Tbls syrup, and some cinnamon - pour in round cake pan, sprinkle with pecans and place cinnamon rolls on top of mixture - bake at 350 for 15 - 20 minutes. Let cool a few minutes before inverting onto plate. They are amazing! Everything always thinks they are made from scratch. I actually make them for little gifts during Christmas time also.

I always buy the Grands Extra Rich. Not all stores carry that variety though. Three cans will fill a 9x13 baking dish. I cover the top for most of the baking time so they do not get too brown. After they bake I brush the tops with lots of butter and then put the icing on top while they are still hot.
I take them to work fairly often. You don't know how many times I have been asked for my recipe for my homemade cinnamon rolls :rotfl:
