anyone host a pick your poison party? where you have 6 couples, women bring a bottle of wine each and men bring a 6 pack of beer each. then you have a tastetest. by the end of the night, you have tried either 6 different kinds of wine or 6 different kinds of beer.

i am hosting 1 in a few weeks. i would like to offer some (lots) of appis and cheeses and such to ward off the drunkenness that i am sure is to follow.

any cheap (i mean frugal!) ideas for alcohol absorbing appis. other than cheese and crackers, i was also thinking some bread and soft cheese spreads. but else? cheap...

cheers
:woohoo:

Take Pillsbury crescent roll dough and wrap the whole thing around one of the following:

pepperoni, garlic, and mozz

or

a quarter wheel of brie. (add some brown sugar if feeling frisky)

Bake in oven following temp and time on the wrapper, take out when golden brown

Garnish baked brie with grapes and water crackers. classy. :) pepperoni roll stands alone, obviously.

When we go wine tasting we take cheese dip and tortilla chips, OMG it's the BEST ever! LOL If I was doing this at home I would probably serve some bread and spinach dip as well as some artichoke dip. The bread/chips will help. :) I also like to have some chocolate available, some red wines are AMAZING with the right chocolate or cheese. :)

Don't kid yourself that giving people food will make them more able to drive themselves home. I would make sure people have a safe way home. Just a friendly reminder, I'm sure you are being very responsible.

we are only inviting neighbors within walking distance. and a few others who can cab it home, and leave their car here. we are picking up the tabs for the cabs since there are only 2 couples who will use them and then they don't have to worry about.

thanks though.

yummy. that sounds good. what cheeses and chocolate go well with white wine?

and what about beer? my husband loves potato chips. but does that look cheap?

tortilla rolls

cream cheese block, small container of sour cream, any shredded cheese you like (I use either colby jack or cheddar), and green chiles. Mix all together and then butter onto tortillas. roll tortillas and wrap in cling wrap (if you like, I don't bother), and refrigerate for a couple of hours, slice then serve with salsa.

1. Heat oven to 375°F.
2. If using crescent rolls: Unroll dough into 1 large rectangle on work surface. Press into 12x9-inch rectangle, firmly pressing perforations to seal. If using dough sheet: Unroll dough on work surface. Press into 12x9-inch rectangle.
3. Cut dough into 12 squares. Gently press squares into 12 ungreased mini muffin cups, shaping edges to form rims 1/4 inch high. Spoon cheese evenly into dough-lined cups. Top each with bacon and onion. In small bowl, beat egg and whipping cream with wire whisk or fork until blended. Spoon slightly less than 1 tablespoon mixture into each cup.
4. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until edges are golden brown and filling is set. Cool 5 minutes. Remove from muffin cups.

Also, meatballs are usually a good option as well

I'd encourage some water consumption be it sparkling flavored or plain. Also have a really good strong coffee around a small dessert.

I'd also plan the party to start early and have fun active stuff to do to burn some of that alcohol. Be it dancing you can make a play list on your ipod or make a cd and give out copies as a party favor, or even something like pictionary you don't have to buy the game just whip out a bowl with a bunch of papers with stuff on it and a marker and sketch pad. Just something thats going to get people up and moving around so when they head home they will be sober lol.

have fun.
