Pick a Pearl Advice

My girls and I have the Cinderella pearl cages. (I am a TA & I buy them in bulk as gifts!)

A few notes from our experiences:
Mitsukoshi in Japan is the most popular spot and they make the biggest "fuss" over the whole event.

I got a 7.75mm pearl that fit in the cage, but barely! If you get one larger you can keep it for something else and just wear the cage solo. They will also "trade down" in size if you want one that would fit.

My youngest got 6.5 mm twins and BOTH fit in the cage.

The "silver" Cinderella cages that you see are NOT sterling and not particularly heavily plated. A quick coat of clear nail polish will really extend the life of your cage. Mine turned rather quickly without it (of course, for some reason my body does wierd stuff with metal... turns it and me all sorts of odd shades ranging from green to black)

HTH!

My DS and I love to pick pearls in the store in Japan/Epcot. We've always brought them home and haven't done much with them. He always reminds me his are bigger than mine. We don't have any tricks, but the workers in that store make each one seem very special.

My best advice is to pick a fantastic husband and he will buy you an awesome pearl!!!! He and DS bought me a beautiful Black Pearl necklace for my 40th and it was the thought of them related to Disney that put them up to it.

I learned of this just before our second trip to WDW, and had to go. I'd told DH all about the "pick ugly" suggestion (hadn't heard the small one then) and he didn't believe me. I stuck to my guns, and *wow* did it pay off.

Twin 6.5mm Silver pearls on my first pick!

I've since been back several times, and now have one "pick" from each trip. I tried the Cinderella cage from the Bay of Evil, but found the silver wore off VERY quickly. So now I just have a small collection of pearls waiting for me to decide what to do with them. I can't wear jewelery at work, and we rarely get all dressed up to go out. But I wear my silver pearl earrings every chance I get!

If it wasn't mentioned on a previous page, they also have a location near Yacht & Beach Club near or on the beach path area.

On the long thread it was mentioned that DTD was a bit more 'pushy' in buying something to go with it. At Japan we have taken our pearl in just the baggie several times.

Some settings can be pricey - especially with the price of gold these days. I normally pick a very simple 'sweep' type of sterling setting for a ring. I think the most I ever spent all in was $65, if even that much. I don't wear rings & only a medic-alert bracelet, so rings work the best for me!

If you are at Islands of Adventure, they did have a location around the right side of the park near the back - I believe in the Lost Continent area? I really don't remember - but we did buy one there! Not sure if still there or not.

DD got a 7.5 mm Christmas 2009, but by the time she set it in a sterling ring with diamonds, we were at around $100. :lmao: Thank goodness she didn't go for gold! We avoided the place like the plague Christmas 2010. ;)

Does Disneyland have anything similar?

What do you guys do for the boys? Do you get them set in something? I know my DS would love picking a pearl, but I would have no idea what to do with it for him.

Thanks,
deb

Do they take Disney gift cards here? We are going as a big group and thought I could give the ladies a gift card for Christmas.

Thanks for your help.

Try a little clear nail polish - works wonders!

As for the the pp that asked about her son - I think letting him pick a pearl for mom sounds like a great idea!

My DS6 would have flipped if I told him he couldn't pick-a-pearl when his sister & I were.

He's still young enough that he likes certain necklaces. So I purchased a turtle pearl cage and we put his pearl in that.

I have read other people who have found little treasure chests and their DS store the pearls in there. Others have found various settings good for boys.

One person said her DS picked a pearl each & every trip. Saved them all up and turned them into a necklace for his fiance.

We do this at the Japanese pavillion department store every time we are in Epcot. Years ago my mother told us all to find the ugliest, craggiest one we could. We have never been disapointed. My daughter has her 7mm twins made into a ring, and two other 7.5 mm ones made into post earrings. We have however always had jewelry made at home with a jeweler we know. I have never had a problem with anyone pushing us to have the jewelry made there. It is such a fun thing to do together, and you just never know what may pop up!
Oooh now I am itching to get back there in July!

Can someone tell me where the Pick a Pearl in DTD is located? I didn't see anything listed on maps. :confused3 I will only visit DTD for that only and would hate to spend a lot of time finding it.

It's in the Marketplace in its own seperate booth on the main walkway near Captain Jack's restaurant.
Good Luck :goodvibes

I'm so glad I found this thread. I've never heard of pick-a-pearl I don't remember seeing this anywhere on our last trip. :confused3 But now that I know about it I definitely want to try it out. Sounds like a lot of fun! :teeth:

Great thread! we did this one when our oldest was 5 and will again this yr for our youngest who is now 5. I didnt know about buying the cages and this sounds great!

I highly recommend the Experience at Japan's Pick a Pearl over the others...

Thank you to PP's on the "ugliest smallest" oyster advice ! I did not know this!

DS18 got his GF a pearl necklace May 2010... I loved the experience !
