I have a planned vacation with the family on July 28th-Aug4th. I was wondering if anyone knew if you are allowed to take a vacation for a week. I got accepted to the Information Technology department.

Any info will help :-)

thanks

I don't know.. In my interview they asked if I had ANY conflicts or anything planned. They said that they don't like people even asking for days off. As in.. you're supposed to just let them schedule you any way THEY want. Maybe they were just trying to scare off any non-serious applicants.. I don't know. This could also only apply to Animal Program Interns.

Since you're "in", I would call Disney, try to contact your department, and ask. It's better to know now than after you arrive.

I also have a conflict. My very good friend is getting married in September, and I may ask to get 2 days off to fly out for it. I'm not holding my breath though.

It is my understanding that we have no vacation time and no sick leave, etc.! I believe they expect you be at work everyday unless there is a seriuos problem. It's only a five month program, so if you could postpone your vacation? IDK, but I would check with your direct supervisor when you arrive!

I know I am taking one day off in two weeks to go home, but that is it!

Damn lol i wish i could postpone a summer vacation for 5 months but i cant :-( oh well thx for the info

it's funny to see what everyone says about this...i'm diong a PI right now and extending until January. I'm getting married in September and when I asked for time off (like half of september) the general manager of my area told me that as interns, it's pretty sweet because we can take off whenever we want....i mean, you don't get paid for it or anything....

SOOO --- I would talk to your Leader and let them know ahead of time. Some places, like my area, we can move our days off around, and I'm allowed to put 2 weekends together instead of actually taking time off...just working like Sunday-Thursday, then off Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and then working Tuesday-Saturday.

Just some thoughts.

I believe what she's saying is that as a professional intern, you are considered an hourly employee (not salaried). As such you don't get designated ~paid~ sick leave or vacation time. It basically means that as long as you request off in advance you should be fine to take time off in a rather unlimited fashion. That's how it works as a regular cp too.

Wow, great info! Thanks! I knew I wouldn't get paid, but I just didn't think we were allowed to since we were interns! Guess it doesn't hurt to ask :)

It's a bad idea to ask for time off in the first six months of accepting a new position, intern or not. Hate to say it but if you really need that week long vacation you already scheduled, you should decline the position.

For the wedding, if you are not maid of honor or best man, you probably should expect to forfeit that.

It very much depends upon who your Leader is and what the workload is like. You should not feel at all intimidated by asking for some time off .. the worst they can say is "no." I'm in the middle of planning a wedding and I've already gone home twice in the last 3 months and will be going home in June for a 4-day weekend and in July, as well. As long as you're getting your job done and doing things in a way that they want, you should be able to ask...there are no rules about it...you just need to ask. Like I said before, since you're not full-time or part-time, you don't get paid vacation or paid sick time...It really depends on your Leader and the type of role and duties you have.

I too have asked for one or two days off for a trip to San Diego, and my mgr just said it's fine if I need to take days off, I just wouldn't get paid. Just make sure you let your mgr know asap, and it shouldn't be a problem getting those days off.

A friend of mine is doing a PI now in Guest Relations and she had no problem taking a week off to come home. They're also letting her come home for a few days next week to attend her graduation. (At our school, if you graduate in December, you can walk in the commencent the following May.)

I believe my area is only open M-F 9-5 (standard business hours) so i don't forsee a problem with taking a weekend off in October for my sister's wedding. I mean if I can't get any extra days off, I can deal with flying out late friday and fly back in late on sunday. In any status - CP, PI, full-time CM - you really just have to develop a good relationship with your managers from the start. Would you want to give someone extra days off who's name you're not even sure of?

But really, don't worry too much. Worry a little, but don't lose sleep over it.
