Photoshop Elements

I'm thinking about purchasing Adobe Premiere Elements. I used The full blown Adobe Premiere in high school in a news broadcast class I took and LOVED it.

I'm wondering what any of you think about the elements version.

I'd be using it to put together movies of when I'm with my friends and family on vacations or whatnot.

Anyone have any comments about it? I would love to hear what you all have to say!!!

I purchased photoshop elements and LOVE everything about it

Thank you to you all in advance!!!

I decided to fully convert to Element and got Element 6. All my photos are stored in Windows folder format under my pictures and I manually backed up (copied) all the folders on to an external HD and CDs. They are in subfolders such as 2007 > vacation >April WDW

Can I get an opinion on whether I should reload all my backed up pictures back onto my hard drive so Element can tag and catalog them?

Thanks

Sue

i have elements 5 and never use the catalog/organizer. i have my photos in folders and i usually include some identifing info in the name of the folder and photo, so i felt since the catalog was freezing my computer ( once it got over a few thousand photos it froze up constantly, i don't have much ram,512 which is the mininum amount for ele 5, so not sure how much that affected it) and then wouldn't save edits etc, it wasn't worth the hassle or the space.
personally if you like the system you have now, i'd stick with it.
when i first got elements 4 i had things tagged but unless you have tons of tags it doesn't really help that much...ie say you want a photo of your child, you still have 100s of photos to go through with the tag of the child's name so then you'd have to add child occasion etc. i just add that all to the folder when i download and then add custom names for the photos Ie beach, april 08 and find that just as easy to do. you can use custom names for tags though in the downloader if you have a bunch of disk space and want to save it all again in the organizer( doesn't help for what you have now but would be easier to tag new downloads)

I "personally" do not use the Elements Organizer, (just don't see any advantage) and use strictly a Windows format organization.

I set up my system about 8 years ago and keep backups (second HDD, external HDD and multiple copies of removable media) and also keep an MSWord document listing of directories, folders and subfolders. Works for me but everyone should do what works best for them. I find it easier with my system so I just stay with it.

Currently have about 18,000 digital images stored (never trash much of anything) and am in the process right now of scanning about 10 to 11,000 photos and putting them into Windows format organization.

Just my $.02

i have the elements 5 version and find it to be fine. i don't do videos so can't comment on that aspect( mine doesn't do it ) i don't use it a ton since i use a mix of other programs and plug ins usually, but it has plenty for what i use it for. most of the full version is there except actions and some premade actions can be used with elements, i just don't think there is a way you can make and save your own.

I have PSE4 and I do use the catalog. I don't tag items, but I do group them into collections - by events and persons. The tagging just seemed to take way to long and the collections seemed to flow with my way of thinking. Since I scrapbook, I'd be scrapping from an event or about a person, so that's the way I organized my pics. I just wish there was a way to track which photo's I've printed already. (there probably is and I just haven't figured it out!);)

I use my organizer too. At first, I was frustrated by it, because it didn't make sense to me immediately. Once I started shooting in RAW only, I used it because I couldn't see any thumbnails in Windows. :( I've never bothered getting something that would allow me to do that, I've just adapted and used the PSE Organizer.

I just reloaded all my photos, it wasn't as painful as I thought. I went partial digital in 2001 and full digital in 2003 so it wasn't that long ago. Next task, buying a 35mm scanner to work on boxes and boxes of negatives! :headache:

The Community College in my area is offering Elements Classes as credit free this summer so I know they do exist. I also use the Missing Manual. You can get quite creative with Elements but there are a host of limitations that will slow you down. I am often spending time coming up with workarounds to create an effect that would be a single click in CS3.
There are a lot of styles available to help overcome some of the limitations but you will have to go out and find them, install them, and hope they work.
There are other plug-ins that will increase the abilities of elements. Although you can fool elements into using an adjustment layer as a mask by making a clipping group Grants Tools http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/index.html is available for free from his web page and it will add color channels, alignment grid, and a true mask to Elements. Just make sure you download the right version. One of the biggest missing tools is the pen tool. You can not do paths in Elements but there is a company that offers a plug-in for that and it does not list that it is available for PSE6. http://www.humansoftware.com/pages1200/PathsElem/HSpathsfram11.html You also have to pay for it.
Try PSE, play with it, if you are like me you will find it a lot of fun and learn new things every day. For me it is very addictive and may soon bite the bullet and shell out the big money for Photoshop CS3.

I guess the question is "what does the elements version not have, that you need or like to use?"

I use Premiere Elements for my video work. I don't do anything sophisticated, just some basic cuts and transitions, Elements does fine for what I need.

Help! I am a newbie trying desperately to crank out an Indiana Jones invite for my son's party in 2 weeks. I downloaded the "adventure" font and then the adobe photoshop elements 6.0 trial for free. I am so confused by the whole process. I went into create and then did the frame which I changed in the artwork section so it looked like an old scroll. I clicked on the background and made it like old brown paper. When I get my son's photo I should be able to import it ok.

My problem is with the text. How do I do that? I clicked on the text and found one I liked the gradiated orange/yellow but then when I was trying to figure out how to get the text from being in the center of the page and covering the pix I accidentally trashed the color. So I guess I have 2 questions, how can I get the color that I trashed back since it would be perfect for the invite and how do I go about putting the text on the other 1/2 of the invite, not covering up the picture?

Thank you!!!!

I can help you but first I am unsure what you are trying to do.

Is this the effect you are going for?

YES, YES, YES!!! That is EXACTLY what I was going for!! :thumbsup2

I really don't have any idea what I'm doing though w/the photoshop. I pretty much have just used Word for party invites before. Is it difficult? Any chance you would be able to do it w/our info? I'd happily "donate" some Disney dollars for the help! Thanks! Lisa

This is a 5X7 photo work space. Whatever size you use set your resolution high to 250 or 300.
What you need to do is this.

Once you set your background and your frame, you need to click on the EDIT tab. It is the orange one all the way to the left under the top bar that contains the close (x) icon.
You will now need to make a new layer. To do that you click on the box that looks like it has a corner of a page lifting. It is located in the layers pallet under the word normal.
By default Elements will place your new layer at the top of any selected layer.
Now this is where you will place your headline.
Try to follow it is easy.
First click the T for text over on the left in the tool box. You will have a text bar appear. Don't worry about where it shows up we will move the text later.
Type the word you want. In mine I used "Welcome".
Type the word and size it by preselecting the proper font size of by dragging the handles. (those are the little boxes). You can also move it now by using the section tool located in the top left corner of the tool box.
Now highlight your text. We need to give it that great Indy shape.
At the top you will see the text options bar. this will include the font size and color similar to what word would be like. In that bar is a distorted T with a curves arrow under it. That is the text warp tool click on that and a dialog box will open up. By default the radio button should have selected horizontal that is what you want. at the top will be a drop down menu that will read
Style>none. Drop that down and select arch.
Now at this point it will look nothing like the Indy logo but trust me it will. I will give you the slider settings to get you in the ball park but you may have to tweak them yourself because your text may not be the exact same size as mine and that will effect the outcome.
set:
Bend +11
Horizontal Distortion -30
Vertical Distortion +1
Now it should look right, now we need to add the color.
Select the gradient tool. It is in the left side tool box under the brush. It is a box that fades from yellow to blue. One you activate the tool the top bar will show your gradient on the left and the word EDIT will be boxed next to it. hit the edit box. A dialogue box will open up and you will now select your gradient. To start click on the black to white pattern at the top that do not use the checkered pattern. It has to be the solid black to solid white. Now to change the color, click on the small back box on the lower left under the gradient. The color will appear in the bottom color selector. Click the color selector box and a color pallet will appear, select orange click OK. Click the white box at the right and repeat but this time select yellow. If you want to add a little white in the middle simply double click under the black diamond in the center of the gradient. this will add another color and you can repeat the selection processes and choose white.
You will see that when you click on the color box you can move them to adjust the amount of the color. Slide you yellow and orange in toward the white. You don't want has much white as orange and yellow.

Click OK and your gradient box will close and you pattern will now appear at the top bar over on the left.
Now we need to color our Indy letters.
Over in the layers pallet on the right you will see each layer. At the top should be your Indy letters and the background should be checkerboard.
Put the cursor over the checkerboard. Hold down the control key (ctrl) the little hand will now have a box in it. While holding the ctrl key and without moving the cursor lest click once.
You should now have marching ants around you text. (When you start the next step a box will pop up asking you if you want to simplify the layer. Yes you do click yes or OK.)
You should still have the gradient tool on, put the cursor at the top of the word>hold the shift key>left click and hold>and drag down to the bottom of the text>let go of the mouse button. The text is now colored.
The marching ants will still be there so we can now add the black out line.
select Edit at the top bar and select stroke from the drop-down. a dialog box will pop up. set your stroke around 12 pixels. for location choose outside.

Now you can turn off your ants. At the top bar click select>deselect.
Now you can add a drop shadow if you like you will find it over in the layer styles. It is the box above where the layers are displayed.

Now to add the rest of the text make another layer and just add your simple text. You can then re-size and move it without effecting the other elements in your work.

post when you get stuck and I will get you through it.
This is easy once you have done it.

when your done with this we will move on to more advanced drawing techniques like this TV. Made compleatly from scatch:thumbsup2

Ok, I'm stuck! I'm doing the gradient color. I clicked on gradient then edit and have the gradient editor box open. Do I need to click ok after selecting the solid black to solid white? I'm having a difficult time figuring out how to select the colors. I don't see where to click to open the color selector box. Thanks!

No, I am trying to keep it simple so I didn't want to bog you down with details. But since this is a learning tutorial so I will explain.
By default if your 2 color selections are the default white and black when you pick the gradient tool it will set it at black to transparent (indicated by the checkerboard to the right). If you try to change the colors it will still have a transparency and you will not know why it isn't working. At this point you would give up and want to kill me. That is why I wanted you to pick the solid black and white first, to get rid of the transparency.
Once you are at a solid black and white, select the colors you want to use, you do not have to close it out and reopen the box.
Keep me posted.

Ok, I found a gradient orange/yellow pattern that I clicked ok on and it is showing up in the toolbar on the top left side. However, when I look over at the layers on the right side I see the indy font warped layer but there is no checkerboard pattern. I'm so sorry for all the trouble. I can't thank you enough for all your help. I'm determined to get this thing done now!
