Photoshop Elements

Tuffcookie,

We recently upgraded our computer and are running Vista. I have PSE4 but it is does not run on Vista. I think PSE6 is our only option. I have it on my Christmas List as well as the Missing Manual. Hopefully we don't encounter any of the problems that have been discussed.

Well, now I'm thinking I don't want to buy PE at all. I did a search for Windows Vista compatable photo editing software and high on the list is Photo Toolkit 1.7. Has anyone ever heard of this one and if you have used it, what is your opinion? I do use Picasa but wanted something with a few more features. With Photo Toolkit 1.7 you're suppose to be able to whiten teeth. This is a free download so I might give it a try.:)

I am running Elements 5 on Vista with no problems.

Safetymom - have you noticed any lag time or slowness when using PSE5 with Vista? That seems to be the biggest complaint. Did you have any problems transferring your files when you moved from Windows to Vista?

Some of the negatives in the reviews of PSE6 won't apply to me since I am not upgrading from 5 (one complaint is that there aren't enough changes to warrant that upgrade). I am, however, concerned about reliability and smooth-running of the program.

I can't say that I like the idea of switching from one software (PS) to another (Paint Pro, for example) but I don't want to put any money into a glichy/buggy program either.

Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, runs well on vista I just installed it on my laptop

I haven't tried this, but I am told that if Vista users right-click on the PSE4 icon, and choose the Compatibility option, then say "Windows XP", then PSE4 runs sweetly.

regards,
/alan

I had no problem transferring files. The program is rock solid on my computer and I use it quite a bit. I have no problems with slowness.

just wondering if anyone had problems( other than me i mean) with pse5 on xp? and if so is it better or worse or the same on vista?

i assumed it was my old computer but hearing this wondering if it's just the program in general..i do want to get lightroom which i think will do most of what i want to do but want to be able to use pse5 if i need to.

getting closer to my new computer and i want it to actually work for my photos;)

Dan - have you noticed an improvement from 5 to 6?

6 is on my Christmas list (since it is readily available in the stores). If I don't get any photo software, I will have to try the trick that alan posted to see if 4 will work.

For me, it seems just easier to use, more intuitive, some additional automated functions and wizards. These programs are so feature laden and I really do so little to a photo, if anything, and have so little time to figure it all out, LOL. It has a clean look also. I like it.

I would not worry too much about the PSE6/Vista responsiveness. I am assuming that the responsiveness is largely a Vista issue, which is well documented. If so, then this issue is being addressed with the Vista Service Pack that is about to be released late this month or early January. Also, Adode normally makes adjustments on it's applications after a few months that address any performance issues found after their initial test release (all Adobe major version [4.0, 5.0, 6.0] releases are test releases). If your PC is Vista ready (i.e., a recent PC) and ample memory (2G+) then you should not have many issues with its performance.

To sum up, go for 6.0.

Thanks! I have a brand new computer with Vista and it has plenty of memory (for now ;) ).

I appreciate everyone's replies!

not sure what i am doing wrong...i know i can do it via multiprocess but as far as i can tell that would save them all on the original and i want to save them as a watermarked jpg and unwatermarked jpg
so i am doing it like missingmanual said:
opening photo, adding watermark as layer then saving layer,,, the only way i can figure out how to save only that layer( not the photo with it) is by deleting all the other layers and saving the watermark one alone but when i do that after i reopen it next time it is on a solid instead of transparent background, so i have to start over.....
any ideas how else i can save it so i don't have to keep remaking it?

and as far as i can tell i have to save a whole folder if iprocesss multiple files so unless i make double. jpg copies in 2 folders and mark them all that would be the only way to mark copies and leave an original jpg unmarked?
thanks

with paint shop pro..rather than just saving, I save copy as and make a new folder, that way my originals are untouched..

that's what i'm doing now( saving to another folder) but i'm "supposed" to , according to the book, be able to save the watermark and just open and drag it , it opens and drags fine but is opaque, the whole page i mean...so as of now i'd either have to batch process after i open convert save to jpg, copy and save to jpg in another folder or watermark each time making a new watermark each time.. which is okay really now since i'm doing old photos but once i get these old ones done it probably would be easier for me to watermark each as i go but unless i figure out how to save the water mark right, i can't without making it new each time
