Photoshop Elements

I just got Photoshop Elements 6 and I have a question on importing.
When I do File -> Get Photos and Videos -> From Camera or Card Reader, it allows me to set it up so it automatically creates subfolders based on the shooting date. This works great and it's exactly how I want my photos organized. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be any way to do this when I'm getting photos from a CD instead of from a card reader. When getting them from a CD, it lets me choose to "Copy Files on Import", but it puts them all in one folder.

Is there any way to pull photos in from a CD and have it automatically create subfolders based on the shooting date like it does when you pull them from a camera or card reader?

I don't think so cause Adobe has it set up to go into a seprate file for removable media.
I just move them to the correct folder. There probably is a way but I just figure this way is easiest.

Yeah, I've been doing it manually, it's just a pain. Since it won't do it automatically, there doesn't seem to be much point in even using the "Get Photos and Videos" function. Instead, I've found it easier to just open two instances of windows explorer, copy the photos into the correct folders (or create them if they don't exist yet), then in PS, I just use the "Add Unmanaged Files To Catalog" function.

Since I couldn't find anything to do this for me automatically, I decided to write it myself. So I wrote a pretty simple program that lets you select a source folder and a destination folder. It then finds all the photos in the source folder (or any subfolders), checks the exif data to get the shooting date, then copies the files to a date-named subfolder in the destination folder (or creates it if it doesn't exist). It doesn't have much flexibility, but it works.

Likes? dislikes? Comments? Is it easy to use? I've been using Microsoft Picture It 2001. It does some cool things, but I'm interested in the Photoshop.

I received an email to buy Elements for 74.99, a discount of 25.00, plus free shipping if ordered before Nov 26. The button to get this deal says, "upgrade now". I have Adobe for pdf files, of course, but no Photoshop. Can I use this deal? Sorry if that's a silly question...

Thanks for your help!

I am really a novice to the whole photo editing thing, but I am happy with the software/program. I purchased a book " Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0" unleash the hidden performance of elements by Mark Galer. Bought it in a bookstore for around 30.00. It has a DVD with several tutorials that walk you through editing several different types of photos ie: landscape, portrait, etc. that are very helpful!:thumbsup2

I like it. It does alot of stuff. I can't really get into it right now as I am packing for my morning trip to WDW (:yay: ) but I wanted to add that if you do get it, you will most likely need a book to help you figure out how to use it to it's fullest extent. I have PSE 5.0 and I bought the book "The Photoshop Elements 5 Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby. It is pretty darned easy to follow and has helped me out MANY times. You would probably download PSE 6, but I'm sure Kelby has books out about that or he will soon.

Hope that helps a bit.

Good luck!

i like it also, recommend another book, the missing manual by barbara brundage...only problem i have encountered is with a old computer( 512mb) and a big catalog, it bogs down and freezes so i had to move all my photos to an external drive which take for ever for them to load...the software itself is fine but i'm sure would work better on another computer

Thanks, ya'll! Very encouraging. Only problem I could foresee is that I'm a very visual learner. Give me an instruction book and I may never learn it. Show me, and I'll never have to be shown again!

I like it alot as well. I ditto Scott Scott Kelbys book. I learn from seing and doing as well and he has plenty of "follow alongs" Kelby really makes it quite easy to understand. IMO this book should be owned by all who are new to Elements! BTW he does indeed have a book out for PSE 6 as well.
If all you want to do is basic editing however I really like Picasa which is a free download.
Elements will take you beyond basic editing which can be very rewarding. There are plenty of "plug ins" to play with as you get better...which doesnt take long.

I have Version 5.0 now but started way back with 3.0 and use it almost daily. Each version has had different minor issues (maybe major depending upon your use). Biggest annoyance for me in 5.0 is the simple fact that you can't click on an icon to Save but must use a pull-down menu. When you are working with hundreds of photos it really wears me down! I don't know anything about Microsoft Picture It 2001 but depending upon your editing skills, there can be a brief steep learning curve. Learning to use layers drove me nuts for awhile but I am always learning new things about this versatile, inexpensive program. I do love that you can add various plug-ins for special filters, special effects and scads of other great add-ons like ready-made frames.

Here is a link to the Elements User Forum.

Scanning some of the messages, looking at the help features available and so on should give you a feel for use and problems. FYI - I find their forums as friendly and helpful as the DIS. This is a place you join and pose your questions and get help, step by step tutorials from other users and great inspiration.

---Forgot to add that I made the DIS Birthday icon below and my avatar with a wonderful set of programmed add-ons from Panos using PSE.

I think Elements will do everything you want to do with your images, and more. I have v4 and find it worked great (until I went to Vista) and did eveything I wanted it to do.

But, if you're like me (and it looks like quite a few other on the board) you'll notice that there is another, "bigger, better" Photoshop available for a whole lot more money. I am a recovering techno-geek (well, I'm not really recovering, but that's another story) and find it hard to stay with Elements when I know I'm "missing some features". Yes, those features may never be useful to me; yes, these features were designed for professionals; yes, these features are designed for industries other than simple image-editing. But, they are there and I NEED THEM!

So, if you are 'one of us', you might as well break down and spend the big bucks now. Otherwise, you will be thinking from that point on, "I wonder how much better this image would be if I has PS CS3?"

Oh, and you'll need Lightroom while you're at it. After all, that one's chump change after CS3.

Dunno about the USA, but in the UK that same bundle retails at £99.99 fom play.com, who are normally very cheap. At today's exchange rate, that's US$200.

Seems like a good price to me!

regards,
/alan

That's 19 bucks cheaper than you can get it from campustech... so I would say yes it is cheap as well.

I bought my dd Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 through a link someone provided on this board. It is just the disk, no instructions, unless there is a tutorial on the disk. Should I get a book to go with it to help her figure out how to use it and if so, which book do you recommend? Thanks!

Hi Tiffany! When I bought Elements 4, the manual that came with it was basically useless, so I bought a book by Barbara Brundage called "The Missing Manual." It really goes into detail about all the diff. brushes and selection tools, plus you can go to the book's website and download the actual pictures they show in the book so you can work along with what they're doing. $39.95, but well worth it!

i agree with amy, even after you get the hang of it, it's a great reference book. there are also some discussion forums on the adobe site that might help with particular question

I have Windows Vista.

I have been reading alot of unfavorable reviews on Photoshop Elements 6.

Should I get PE4 or 5?

I'm curious to read your responses. I was going to buy it this week too, but I have a Mac.
