Photoshop Elements

still 4 left. 1 person cancelled.

Guys, don't mean to be rude but kindly don't change your mind after forwarding your address because everytime somebody does that, DH and his friend will have to send an email to rectify it.

Thanks for your understanding.

I have a question about resizing photos in elements.

If I have a digital picture that is 3008x2000 and approximately 2MB how can I reduce the photo to a resolution of 640x480 AND keep the file size as close to 500kb as possible?

I'm not quite sure how to do this. A program like Irfanview will left me resize to 640x480. but then the image is reduced to like 100kb (low quality).

Thanks!!!

Not sure about Elements but in Photoshop CS2(which should be similar) lets you resize and it gives you 12 levels of jpeg quality settings, it also tells you an estimated files size for each setting b4 you actually save.

So if you try to save the newly resized image at MED(5 or 6) and the file size is still to small you can raise it. But obviously once you reach the MAX(12) setting you will not be able to go up any further.

Also Editing from 3008x2000 to 640x480 will result in either cropping(clipping), or distortion. The are not the same ratio.

first of all, open the file.

Then go to "Image" - "Image Size" - then choose the resolution (in this case 640 x 480), if your original image is not proportional to 640 x 480, just choose which one (either the 640 or the 480) that's more important to you.

Click "OK" or "YES" then image will automatically be resized.

Then save that image WITH A DIFFERENT NAME (so you retain the original image), save a JPEG compression 10, it will be under 500 kb.

Another way to deal with the difference in aspect ratio is to use the crop tool. Select the Crop tool (or hit the C key) on the side bar then type "640 px" and "480 px" in the width and height boxes at the top. Now you can select the area you want to crop and resize to 640x480. This solution offers more control over the process which is important when the ratios don't match. Now simply save the image as a JPG and select the quality level you desire. Don't worry about the file size if you've selected a high quality level. The size will vary depending on the quality selected and the content of your image.

Thanks Paul, Kelly and Anew!!!

Paul, I found your method easiest as I don't have much experience with aspect ratios (yet) and the cropping method made it clear how my resized picture was going to look. :thumbsup2

What is the difference between the 2? Are their any pros & cons to each?

Right now I have a trial version of Paint Shop Pro but some of the scrapbooking things look cool with Photo Elements as well. I need to make a decision within the next month since my trial version will end.

If you have either of these programs, please let me know what you like/dislike about it. Thanks so much...

Photoshop Vs Photoshop Elements

For the novice user, Photoshop Elements is perfect, for the more advanced user/design for professional use, Photoshop. Photoshop has all the techniques and features elements has but is more advance. Personally, I use Photoshop because I find Elements is now too basic. Download the trials for both and test them out, although, Photoshop very very exspensive..

I use both. In all honesty, for what most people need, Elements is a great tool at a fraction of the cost. My advice is to buy Elements and become familiar with it. If you find that you need more, you can always step up. My guess is that you'll be happy with Elements.

Totally agree. Photoshop is massively more expensive and for an awful lot of things Elements is fine. It would be some time before you find you stretch the boundaries of Elements and, unless you get really professional, stick with Elements, enjoy all you can do with it and enjoy shooting photos.

I use Photoshop (CS2) because I needed it for work. Otherwise, I would stayed with Elements.

I noticed online that they are actually both the same price though thru their websites. They are both posted for $99.00.

* Sorry, I meant to compare PAINT SHOP PRO (not photo shop) and PHOTO ELEMENTS

You can get Photoshop Elements on Amazon for $84.99 - I've had it sitting in my shopping cart for a few weeks, just haven't got around to purchasing it yet.

I hope it's OK to ask this question here. I am a Mac user, and have Adobe Photoshop both at home and at work, but today started looking at Photoshop Elements. I currently use iPhoto to store and organize my photos, and have had quite a few crashes, and times when iPhoto no longer had my photos cataloged (they were still in folders on the hard drive, but not organized in the iPhoto browser). I was wondering if Elements had many features that were worth buying over and above Photoshop. They do have a filing system for photos, which seemed to be very helpful, and I figured might be more reliable than iPhoto has been. Any other users, comments, or suggestions? Thanks, in advance.

and it does everything I need from it, but I do not spend to much time playing with it either.

Ebay it, get it half the price

plus shipping and handling, it's going to be around the same price again (around US$80), unless it's a review version or a warez version.
