Photos from 4/24/09- 900 Loop, Pool, and a few other things . . .

I don't understand how cutting trees down makes it premium or even desirable anymore. I loved 900 because of the trees and there was some privacy. Before I went to the fort I pictured a bunch of pads with power poles and rv's parked next to each other. Kinda like the Tropical Palms sites on concrete by the pool. Of course once we got there I was wrong but now my vision may be correct. I hate seeing trees come down to make room for a few yards of concrete.

I agree! Its like theya re taking the "wilderness" away from the Fort :(

My kids call 600 the parking lot loop! I really hope they dont do that to any more loops- the trees and privacy are some of the best things about the Fort... sigh...

I think this just boils down to economics, they can't yell at renters, or take the cart away, they may loose a buck, and you know they can't do that!!!

Now if they hassle private owners, maybe they will leave their carts at home and rent from Disney and then do what they want!

I still can't believe that they let private carts in... I would think that the money they would loose by making carters mad, would easily be made up in rentals LOL

John- Now that I think about it, you are right. Don't harass the people who rent from the Fort, just those with their own carts. It isn't hard for me to envision them banning outside carts, and I think you are right, some bean counter could probably convince them that they would make more money doing that.

My husband said the same thing, there are young kids all over the place driving there carts. The kicker of the whole thing is, the 2 standing on the back were 23 & 37 yrs old. I wouldn't let a young kid stand on the back, we make my GS who is 4 sit with us on the seat.

Wow. I didn't realize that your "kids" were adults. That makes it even more ridiculous that they chased you down.

Seems like there will only be premium and preferred loops pretty soon with the 2 partials thrown in for good measure... pretty soon we wont be able to afford to go as much :(

I agree. The bean counters probably figured that people would pay for the premium spots when there are no other sites available. I am not so sure. As we have already seen, these premium sites are not tent friendly, and a lot of folks, even those with RV's want a spot for a tent. I will not camp at the Fort as often if I have to pay for a premium site every time- I love the Fort, and it is worth the price of admission, but I can't help feeling ripped off based on the price difference between a partial and premium site.

I am with you on this. I wish they would leave the trees alone!

I decided to leave our car in the FW lot, and take the bus to AK. It was early afternoon, and we probably would not get a real good parking space at AK, plus we planned on returning to the Fort anyway, so we hopped the AK bus. The buses seemed to be running great on this day. We did not have a long wait on either end. For whatever reason, the Fort has the best bus stop at AK- it is the one closest to the park. Maybe it is to compensate for the fact that the AK bus also serves Blizzard Beach. But, that really isn't a big deal, as BB is close to AK, so it doesn't add much time to the trip. I would rather stop at BB than at WL, which is what happens with the Epcot and HS buses.

We stayed at AK until about 5, and then headed back to the Fort. We decided that we would eat take out from Trail's End for dinner, so when we got back to the Fort, we planned to take a bus down to the Settlement. Since I wanted to stop by the pool and 900 loop again, we would take either an orange or yellow bus, whichever came first.

While waiting for our bus, I was able to snap a few photos of the Trail Blaze Corral:

An orange bus came first. So we hopped aboard. We don't ride the buses very much, since we almost always rent a golf cart, so this was a nice change of pace. I like the fact that they now have a taped voice (that sounds like the same guy who does the monorail announcements) announcing the loops served by each bus stop. The bus is also a great place to people watch. Since the orange bus now goes through the cabin loops, you can watch both cabin people and campers. There is always something interesting to see.

When we got to the 900/1000 loop bus stop, the monorail announcer told us that this stop served Quail Trail and Raccoon Lane (the real names of the 900 and 1000 loops) and the Meadows (that is with an "s") trading post. Argggh! Is it Meadow or Meadows? Nobody seems to know. Or care. Except me. And truthfully, I don't really care very much. I just think it's interesting.

So, anyway, guess what?

I am now back at the 900 loop.

If I am recalling correctly, it is approaching 6.

The workers are long gone.

I am going to take a little walk around to see what I can see.

I can already see that I will not be the only one on the loop, as there are kids playing on the basketball court. For whatever reason, they did not block access to the 900 loop from the group camping area. So, those folks could still use the bridge that crosses into the 900 loop.

Here is what I saw . . .

This is the last inside site on the loop:

FW42409096.jpg

This is the last outside site- the one that is right next to the comfort station. That is the 1000 loop in the background, so you can see that there is a lot of space behind all of these outside sites, too:

FW42409097.jpg

Here is a closer look at Chainsaw Man's victims:

FW42409098.jpg

And, they had already taken a load of logs away when I first visited earlier in the day. :(

Continuing around the loop, we see that this light has been broken. The guys doing the work move quick, and aren't real careful:

FW42409099.jpg

This is one of the inside sites. You can see that there are still a lot of trees between the inside sites on the loop. This loop is still going to be nice, even after the "improvements":

FW42409100.jpg

900 had quite a few sites with trees growing out of the sand pads. Here is one:

FW42409101.jpg

This tree is surely a goner. It is still remarkable to me that the philosophy of the Fort has changed so much. Trees used to be valued so much that they would be left alone, even if they interfered with the use of a site. Now, if it is in the way, it goes, no questions asked.

Here we are, moving around towards the mid-point of the loop. This inside site is nice and deep, with lots of room on both sides:

FW42409109.jpg

This is site 915. We were camped right next to this site earlier this month. There were 3 or 4 trees growing in this site's sand pad. Not anymore:

FW42409110.jpg

This is a side view from site 914. This was our view when we camped here. Pretty nice.

FW42409111.jpg

This is a shot from the front of 914 looking into the loop:

FW42409112.jpg

Here is the utility stump on 912:

FW42409113.jpg

Somebody violated the hose rule, because the hose was removed!

This is the cart that we saw earlier in the day. It is now parked on the inside site across from 912:

FW42409114.jpg

Looks like this site has already been graded and is ready for forms. Maybe that's why the cart is parked here:

FW42409115.jpg

Continuing around the loop, you can see a lot of digging went on here:

FW42409116.jpg

This is the inside site closest to the basketball court and tetherball court. One of the timbers from the sand pad is still here:

FW42409117.jpg

TCD

IIRC the trees you spoke of in the sand pad were Cypress Trees which are slowly diminishing around the fort. If you look back at the old days pics of the fort you will see more Cypress than most any other tree. Not no more. Grind em up and ship em out. Did I mention I HATE the premium loop crap.

If I was ever assigned to a 600 loop site I would ask to be moved. All that is more of the future fort.

These stakes were piled up right next to the site that we looked at in my last photo, above:

FW42409118.jpg

They already have the forms set up for this outside site. That's the 800 loop you see in the background:

FW42409119.jpg

Here are all of the timbers that they removed from around the sand pads:

FW42409120.jpg

You can see the tetherball in the background of this photo. Hard to believe that I just got whipped by my DD in tetherball right there just a few weeks ago:

FW42409121.jpg

Here is the wood chipper and other implements used by Chainsaw Man's henchmen:

FW42409122.jpg

Here is another site ready for concrete. This is one of the sites that backs up to the main road. But, the road is still a considerable distance away. Not like the sites on the 600 loop, for example:

FW42409123.jpg

Here are some old grills piled up and ready to go out to pasture (or wherever old grills go):

FW42409124.jpg

FW42409125.jpg

We have almost walked all the way around the loop at this point. Here we are looking at the first of the outside sites, with the comfort station off in the distance:

FW42409126.jpg

Here's the dumpster:

FW42409127.jpg

This is the second outside site:

FW42409128.jpg

FW42409129.jpg

This is the sand pad area behind that site:

FW42409130.jpg

This is 901. They should tear up this whole slab and move it over. But they won't. So this site is going to be right on the loop road. I wouldn't want this site, but it is close to the comfort station:

FW42409131.jpg

FW42409132.jpg

Well, that's all I have of the 900 loop.

But I do have three photos of a squirrel on a pole. Here you go:

FW42409133.jpg

FW42409134.jpg

FW42409135.jpg

From here, I head over to the Meadow (or Meadows, whichever you prefer) Trading Post, and from there, to the pool. Maybe the workers are gone, and I can get some better splash zone shots?

Deb- Thanks for sharing! That is a cool old photo! Love the colors on that RV! So seventies!

I went back and checked, and my photo is actually of site 915! It was the outside site right next to 914, and I incorrectly called it 916. (I already edited my post.) So, both of these are of the same site (assuming the sites were not renumbered at some point).

Is that a rail fence behind your RV? Or a picnic table? I can't quite tell. I don't know why there would be a fence behind the site. There is a canal (more like a ditch) back a ways, but it is not right behind the site. Also, is the site paved or is that just dirt? It also looks like there is no fake stump for the utility connections. I always assumed that these were original to the Fort, but apparently, they were not.

Very interesting!

TCD

I didn't know they had color pics back in Debbies younger days lol. I really do love the old pics. I have some pics of my cousins at WDW in the 70's. Plaid pants, silk shirts and platforms on. Cracks me up to see that.

As mentioned, when I left the 900 loop, I headed over to the Meadow(s) Trading Post, and walked through on my way to the pool.

I noticed this tent set up behind one of the sites on the 600 loop (as did ynottony on Saturday when he visited):

FW42409136.jpg

I'll tell you what.

If anyone ever gets one of those sites, please send me a PM. I would like to set up my tent here. You won't even know I am there.

Seriously, what a great place to tent camp.

But it doesn't seem right.

It is too close to the Trading Post:

From here, I go to the pool.

As predicted, the workers have clocked out, and are gone.

As stated earlier, I already posted my best shots on the "Something is Happening Near the Pool" thread.

But I have more.

And here they are:

FW42409151.jpg

This shot tells me that the arcade building is not going to be expanded out in this direction. I believe that this is a base for a light pole. Although, I am not quite sure what all of the wires here are for:

I don't get what they are trying to do with this wall beneath the slide. Looks slip-shod to me. Maybe that is the look they were going for?

FW42409163.jpg

This is the metal pipe that was being soldered earlier in the day by the workers at the pool. Here, you can see that a big piece of the sidewalk has been cut and removed:

Why?

Must be that back in those days the whole world was a little more orange. I noticed that looking through my old photos the other day. Maybe global warming has corrected that.:)

Here is the picture restored.....:goodvibes

site9151979.jpg

Wow! That's so much better! Great job!

And on further reflection, the pin stripes are the colors of the German flag. Is there any story behind that, Deb?

Hey Tony, if you have any "orange" shots that need reviving, this is what I can do with a little Photoshop-magic:

Be glad to help you out, you do so much for us... filling in all the gaps left in TCD's reporting! :lmao:

EDIT: Ooops, Comptech beat me too it! LOL

Wow, Shan-man, that is even better! You are the best!

Deb- now it really looks like there is a fence behind the site. Do you remember anything about that?

More splash zone photos.

I honestly thought they would be done with this by the end of April, but it looks like they aren't even close:

And, you would think by now that it would be obvious what they are doing here, but I really don't know. I was surprised to find the construction fence expanded again, and I don't know what the heck is going on with those big white pipes.

Well, that's all I have of the pool.

This also means that I am going to have to make at least one more surprise inspection in the coming weeks. I hope at some point soon that things will start to take shape in the splash zone.

From here, I head back toward the Meadow(s?) Trading Post.

Here are our friends with the tents from across the pond:

FW42409179.jpg

And one last look at them:

FW42409180.jpg

I planned on taking an orange bus down to the Settlement. But, it was so pleasant out, with a really nice breeze, that I decided to walk. I snapped this photo of my "favorite" new site in the 600 loop- site 617:

FW42409181.jpg

As you can see, I could have stopped for a bit to watch TV on this camper's TV, but I had already spent more time on the photos than I had intended, so I pressed on. I am looking forward to seeing someone use the grill on that site.

The walk from the Meadow(s? z? :confused3 ) Trading Post to the Settlement is actually quite pleasant. It was approaching 7 pm, and I smelled all kinds of grilling going on. The walk took about 10 minutes. It ended up being a good choice, too, because I was never passed by a bus, so I would have still been waiting for that orange bus had I not decided to stroll.

At the Settlement, I headed into Trails End to order our dinner.

TCD,
The next time you are at FW could I get you to snap a few shots of the 800 loop towards the back part of the loop? I was wondering, as we are scheduled to stay there in May......:worship::worship:

TCD
I’m pretty sure that’s a picnic table. If you look just below the top and right side of the site marker and at the RV just below where the water hose connects you can see what looks like the pipe legs of the old picnic tables.

And on further reflection, the pin stripes are the colors of the German flag. Is there any story behind that, Deb? TCD

I am of German heritage...but no! Those were the colors of the late 70's.

I'm here to warn you.....they are starting to creep back into home decorating!!

Deb- now it really looks like there is a fence behind the site. Do you remember anything about that?

TCD

Nope - no fence. It's a picnic table. As you can see from the picture, the sites were a lot smaller & much more secluded. Point to be made from this picture.....our Class C was 18' long and back in 1978 when we bought it, that was considered BIG. Now, our 32' Class A is considered small!

Could you imagine trying to get a 45' MH into the 1979 version of that site? No wonder they've done so much clearing! They were tired of trying to place the big rigs in the handful of sites that would accomodate them!

ETA: The original sites were all coquina, then, they paved them with ashphalt, then they upgraded to concrete. In my picture the RV was sitting on ashphalt.

I'm here to warn you.....they are starting to creep back into home decorating!!

Oh, geez save us all! As a kid, my house had stripes on the wall, just like that going on a DIAGONAL down our staircase, wrapping around the wall into the living room....:hippie:
