Photos: Faux wood flooring @ OKW

Wow 59 posts about the new floor! I will wait for the final product before commenting. However, it's been long over due for a decor change.

I don't have a problem with wood floors. I have them in my kitchen, and I am currently taking out my carpeting in my living and dining rooms and putting in hardwood floors. I have laminate in my bedroom and am putting it in my two other bedrooms. I do worry about the noise. We always request a top floor and have gotten one on every trip except one and boy was it noisy above us. I can't imagine how it will be now with the laminate floors. I too hope they put an area rug down.

I'm ok with the wood floors from the pics at least. Add me to those that feel it would have been nicer to still have tile in the kitchen and maintain a sort of separation between the rooms.

Now everyone is going to want a top floor room! I suspect with the age of OKW, there isn't the proper insulation between floors to handle laminate noise.

Diane...maybe OKW was growing weary of everyone requesting "ground" floors due to no elevators so this was their plan to switch it up a bit ;););)

But I agree....possible increased noise level for sure.

Won't vote on liking or not liking the faux wood floors until I can see them in person. It did bring back a memory of one trip where our then 4 yo grandson was talking to the grandparents who did not take the trip and his whole conversation was about what a nice rug there was and they should really see it and just how great it was in general. There was no mention of the parks, the pool or anything else - just the rug in the OKW 2BR villa. He is almost 8 now and has been to WDW every uear - not always DVC- so hope he won't be disappointed the next time he stays at OKW.

I'm going to reserve judgement until the entire rehab is complete, but so far I actually like it. I think it looks more updated, though I agree they need to make some changes so it blends in with the rest of the decor. My guess is it will blend in great with the new decor that just hasn't been installed yet.
I'm with you. It has a clean look and usually I find the Disney designers have great vision. BUT. My concerns are the cheapness of the product..will it hold up to high use or wear out quickly? The recent reports of nearly new items showing wear at BLT are of a concern. Yes, our dues pay for this, so I'd rather my dues go toward high quality products that last longer rather than cheap pruducts that wear out & have to be replaced quickly. I also have concern over the noise. We've had several friends go to all tile homes and the noise is awful..hopefully they'll put in some area rugs and curtains, etc, that will absorb the noise.

I hope they put some drapes of some sort in the living room areas. It get COLD in there in the winter time, and drapes would help insulate. Plus, as cold as it was in January, I can't imagine hopping out of bed and puttng your feet on cold vinyl. :sad2:

The real wood floors in the grand villas are harder to keep up, you can't just damp mop them. You'll know when you stay in the GV that they don't get cleaned often, by the bottom of your socks within half an hour...

It makes more sense to use Pergo or whatever in the villas. Personally I think this looks 100% better than that dark gray carpet.

WE JUST HAD DESIGNER COME IN TO OUR HOME AND REDO WHOLE MAIN LEVEL. WE TOOK OUT ALL WALL TO WALL AND PUT IN REAL WOOD FLOORING INCLUDING KITCHEN. IT OPENED THE PLACE UP WE HAVE MORE OF AN OPEN CONCEPT. BUT WE HAVE NICE AREA RUG IN LIVINGROOM AREA. WE HAVe 1 DOG 3 CATS WITH THE WOOD FLOOR THERE IS LESS HAIR GATHERING ON FLOOR. IF ITS GOOD QUALITY FLOORING IT WILL LAST. CARPETING WEARS OUT WITH ALL THE TRAFFIC. BUT I AGREE ON THE NOISE YOU NEED AN AREA RUG TO DEADEN SOUND.

my dh will be thrilled,he hates hotel carpeting and won't take off his shoes till he's in the bed:thumbsup2
I personally will miss the early 90's decor b/c of the sentimental factor....my baby toddling around the room, etc so long ago.....:lovestruc
but in reality, the decor is sentimental,I wouldn't have the look in my own home;)

Someone mentioned area rugs. But since DVC has such an assortment of abilities/ages of guests, the idea of area rugs makes me a little nervous. Occassionally, older people especially can slip/trip over an area rug. I don't want to have any liability for that lawsuit!

They would have to be room sized rugs otherwise the chance of movement would be too great for an accident. I just can't see the extra expense as being justifiable.

Has anyone said or asked where this room is exactly? This could be a wear test room. I have a $5 to bet that this is temporary flooring.

I haven't mentioned the location because members of my family are occupying the room and I don't want them to be bothered by those wanting to get a first-hand look.

It may have been a test at one time, but according to the cast member I spoke with it's a done deal scheduled to begin in April.

I prefer rugs. I can slip on that sort of floor. I hope they don't extend that idea to the other resorts.

Im wondering what really constitutes "Old Key West decor" The white washed cabinets and tile are really more of what was in style in 1991 when OKW opened. I used to have a condo that I bought new around that time that looked very similar to the Kitchen living room of OKW. (In southern California no less).

I would consider the exterior of the resort to be in the style of Key West Florida. But it is interiors we are talking about here.

If Old Key West was built today, I'll bet the interior would look alot different than how the units look now.

I like the new floors.

Weathered by the sun, sea & wind, white washed woods etc., pastel colors to keep the cool, that's typical Key West. Yes, todays decors have changed but I would personally be horrified if I came into OKW and found dark cabinetry and dark countertops/granite that is typical of the products used today. I like the new flooring, even though the wooden flooring in the GV's was much darker, it didn't affect the decor, IMO. I don't imagine that DVC would purchase a cheap product that wouldn't have the longevity needed for these villas. On HGTV we frequently see wooden floors extended into the kitchens but I chose to keep the tile in my kitchen. Just as I never thought I would like the green cabinetry at SSR, having stayed there a few times, I really like it. It will be interesting to see what they come up with (in it's entirety) for OKW. I love the resort, it will be all fresh and new and as long as they don't bring in a dark decor, I'm sure it will remain my favorite. :)

I wasn't asking what room, just the general area the room is located in. What street for instance?

I don't doubt the floors are being changed out but I highly doubt the fact it is being changed out to an untested product. I know they test linens and carpets in some rooms in regular resorts many times before moving forward with the rest of the resort and many times at the cost of the manufacturer or supplier. All I'm saying is if the room is in a remote location and it was just done rather than being done months ago. It would seem odd to go through all that effort without doing the entire refurb to the rest of the room. It would have made a huge mess and replacement of the other items seems like a minor upgrade after the flooring step was undertaken.

I don't dislike the look of it but it seems strange to make this sort of change where it has never been made before.

It might be possible that the old carpet was ruined (from a mechanical issue and/or guest), and since a renovation is planned for this year it is possible OKW "ran out" of their stock of the old carpeting and choose to install the new floor at a lower cost to their members than resourcing the carpet, just to replace it, again, in a few months.

I also wonder if this is in a building with an elevator and this is actually HA rooms with fewer flooring transition barriers...
