Photos: Faux wood flooring @ OKW

If it is a high quality material it should wear and look fine. Surprised though they stayed with the cabinetry, which does not go well with the new flooring.

Jim, that was my thought as well. That floor does not go well with the cabinets, and I really don't like that they removed the beautiful tile in the kitchen to replace it with this vinyl.

I had an opportunity to speak with a front desk manager this afternoon who was quite familiar with the refresh of the OKW units. He was also involved with the focus groups for which there were about 50 participants.

Here’s what I learned:

  • The vinyl flooring to be installed is the same as that which is in the grand villas at BWV.

  • Participants in the focus groups did say noise in units below those with vinyl was noticeable, but felt the new look of the upgraded units was worth it. I asked how they equated the two…noise vs. new look…he had no response. He did say he would discuss with the resort manager our report of increased noise below the test unit and suggest additional padding under the vinyl.

  • Bedrooms will receive new carpeting…not vinyl. The new carpeting will not exhibit the wicking of the black substance that, with the current carpeting, ends up on the bottom of our feet. They are well aware of that problem and want to eliminate it.

  • There will be some area rugs…at least two…in the living room area.

  • TVs in the living room will be replaced with flat screen models. We didn’t discuss the bedroom TVs, so I can’t comment.

  • Kitchen cabinets will not be replaced, as reported elsewhere, other than damaged doors here and there.

  • Laminate counter tops in the kitchen will be replaced with granite.

  • There was no mention of anything being done in the bathroom or laundry areas.
As suggested, I intend to contact Member Satisfaction with my thoughts about noise. I don’t understand how members of the focus group could overlook it.

Thanks for the follow up. I like how it sounds. Hopefully they will use quality materials. I assume the studios will be carpeted except for the bathroom areas.

I really wish that they had replaced the old carpeting with new. We always found the OKW units so incredibly comfortable. We loved the large carpeted area where the kids could sit on the floor and play or watch TV.

I have real hardwood floors throughout my house and OKW made me realize how comfortable carpeting can be. My stays there actually made me consider putting carpeting over the hardwood floor in my family room.

I believe Lew and don't think this is a test. It does make me feel somewhat better that they plan is to have some area rugs to restore the comfort we once enjoyed so.

The look doesn't concern me as much as does the noisy environment.

Did the manager mention a expected time frame for completion?
I am thinking of staying there in September but my child has severe allergies and all the talk I hear of musty and moldy smells worries me. Do you think countertops and floors should be completed by then ? Thanks

No completion date was mentioned. In fact, others have reported various dates for the project to get underway...so who knows?!

I'd suggest you call MS and ask that you be put into one of the units that already has the new flooring for the reasons you mentioned. They're not going to know which ones they are, but the person who assigns the rooms at OKW will know.
