Do I need to do anything to activate it or is it just linked to my magic bands and ready to go? How about for my family?

If you purchased it through MDE it will just be linked to your account/bands. As for your family, do you manage their accounts in MDE? Or do they have their own accounts separately (more likely if you are travelling with a sibling and their kids or parents). If the latter is the case, you will need to add them as family and friends and have them select the option to let you view and purchase their photos. If you manage the accounts they are already good to go.
