since this is our first trip to wdw, i want to make it as memorable as possible. my question is: how exactly does photopass work? what is included and how much does it cost? is it worth it or is it better to just take your own pics?

This is my first time with a MYW package and I was wondering the same thing...furthermore, do we have to sign up fo photopass to get out 5x7 freebie??

Here is my tip...Photopass is expensive if you plan to buy individual photos at Disney prices (they are $13 for a 5X7). Personally, we take LOTS of photopass photos (because I'm the family photographer so otherwise I won't get in the pics). If you are going to purchase more than 8 of the pictures (for a point of reference, for my 6 day trip last year I had over 250 pictures taken), buy the CD. You will own all the rights to the pictures and will be able to make copies as you want. Here is a link to order it before your trip and you will get 20% off the cost

We just got back from our first trip to WDW and pre purchased the CD for $100 so we made sure when got to WDW, had lots of pictures taken. We have well over 100 photos from all the parks and they came out great. Now i can get them all printed at walmart for pennies a picture vs. paying 15$ a photo as they charge online.

I also recommend that you check out your photos midway through the trip to see how they are coming out, this way if you dont like the way some photos came out, say in front of Magic Kingdown, you can go back to the park before you leave and have another photopass photographer take more pics!
you can do this at the camera center at the various parks.

furthermore, do we have to sign up fo photopass to get out 5x7 freebie??

When the photographer takes your picture they will give you a photopass card. For the free 5x7, you must take the card to one of the camera centers in the park and they will add borders and print the photo for you right there. You can pick any photo you want. For ours, we had a pic of the whole family in front of the castle in MK. This is the same for the Visa Character Meet in Epcot... they will give you a card (or you can use one you already have) and there you must pick up the picture that day in the park.

A couple of more things:

One of the benefits of photopass is that your entire group can be in the picture.

You can put multiple photopass numbers under one account. For instance if your party splits up and uses photopass or some of th restaurants and Test Track have photopass.

Disney also offers you the chance to put borders and autographs on pictures before ordering them. You can save these doctored up photos on your pass. If you get the CD you can have the original and the doctored pictures included.
