We just got back from Disney. I didn't buy photopass or memory maker. I only scanned my magic band when DD met Anna and Elsa and then only because the CM asked to. I got an email from Disney today to log in and look at our photopass pictures. To my amazement, there are tons of pictures on there. All of our camera-option rides, like EE, Space Mountain, ToT, etc. The weird thing is that we didn't use FP+ for these rides. DD rode EE 13 times and every single picture is there.
It only makes sense that they have some kind of face recognition, but I still find it somewhat creepy.

No face recognition. It scans your magic bands and then links those photos to your My Disney Experience account. It also links any other bands connected to that account. You don't need to scan your band, the ride has a reader that reads all the bands in the ride vehicle.

Yep. Nothing too advanced, just an rfid sensor in the ride vehicle.

Hmmmm. I thought it was facial recognition.. We have friends that just came back from a Disney cruise and they got a ton of pics on the beach, in the ocean, pool..... No Magic Bands there.

Pictures are compared to the picture taken when you get on the ship.

Plus, sometimes you do have to hunt down your pictures if you're interested in getting them. It's not always perfect.

At WDW, however, that's the battery-powered long-range RFID part of the band.
