PhotoPass vs. Memory Maker?

My mom and I are planning our first trip home since my Dad passed last November. He was always the family photographer. We were thinking of adding Memory Maker to our package for September 2016. The thing is, I'm not sure I completely understand what it is. I have some questions if anyone can help.
1. What is PhotoPass?
2. What is Memory Maker?
3. What are the differences? Which would you choose?

Thanks for any help you can give us!

1. PhotoPass, is a service. PhotoPass Photographers will take photos of you throughout the parks and you can opt to purchase those photos. They are $14.95 per photo.

2. Memory Maker, is a product. You can elect to purchase it at least three days prior to your trip and receive a discount. MM entitles you to all the digital downloads of all the photos that you have taken with the photopass photographers and any ride photos and videos, as well as magic shots. If you purchase in advance, I believe it's $169 for unlimited downloads of all the photos etc from your trip.

3. If you think that you will at least want to purchase 12 photos, then it would be a better deal to purchase Memory Maker in advance.

I purchased it last year and liked it, so I got it again for this trip.

ETA: Here'sa post of a lot of the magic shots that are available.

Clearest explanation I always see is that PhotoPass is the photography service, and Memory Maker (MM) is the product you buy (the right to digitally download all your photos). It's not a matter of choosing between two products.

Any one can utilize Photopass photographers even if they don't pre-buy the MM. You can purchase individual photo downloads for $15 each or pre purchase MM for $169. It is hard to find info online, but I believe there is still such a thing as "Attractions+" that will allow you to get all your ride photos only for a set price, but I don't know what that price is.

Edit: I see Mata Hari was typing at the same time & gave a great description

Unfortunately, I think I read (somewhere on these boards) that they no longer Attractions+. :(

Also, you can ask the PhotoPass photographers to take photos of you with your own camera, too.

Thank you! I didn't know they could take pictures for us with our own camera.

The Memory Maker - so I pay the $169.00 and then I have rights to those pics to do with them as I choose? After I get home I will not have to pay Disney to have them printed? For example, I can download the pictures to my computer and make my own album to be printed through another site such as Snapfish or Shutterfly?

Thanks in advance - we are leaving in about two weeks and are debating on purchasing it.

Correct. You will get a release to have the photos printed where ever you would like. I created a bunch of scrapbook pages and made 5 shutterfly books with mine.
