Photography book recommendations

?? (Haven't heard of a Canon "xdi" and "d40" is a Nikon)

If a Canon camera, a good magazine from across the pond (UK), although a bit pricey here in the Colonies, available at Barnes & Noble is PhotoPlus Canon Edition. Deals with Canon camera settings, examples of readers photos and has PhotoShop, PS Elements and Canon DPP video CD and tutorials.Runs about $12 at the bookstore each month, but IMHO, well worth it.

I've been unimpressed by photography magazines. The major US ones are just advertising trash. Some of the niche and British ones are pretty good, but they're also pretty pricey.

I will second that motion, the US magazines love just about everything their advertisers make.
For books I still recommend Ansel Adams' "The Camera" and "The Negative", along with Alain Briot's "Mastering Landscape Photography".

you might want to check out a library. I found the one near me had hundreds of photography books and with online renewals you can keep them for months

Just bought a D60 the other day and read through the manual to learn how to "physically" use the camera, but was wondering if anyone could recommend a good photography book to teach me how to use/get the most out of it.

I just started taking a photography class two weeks ago, and our text book is pretty good for understanding what things mean and how to make different exposures. It's called "Complete Digital Photography: Fourth Edition" by Ben Long.

Also, as recommended by a friend (and I found highly recommended on the internet) "Understanding Exposure" by Brian Peterson is wonderful. I just started reading it last night and could hardly put it down. It's a great explanation of how to make a "creatively correct" exposure.

Well, asking this question on here will get you probably three responses by numerous people. Karen already mentioned the first one and probably most recommended; Understanding Exposure. However, the same author also put out another book titled Understanding Shutter Speed. And then the other book I've read that was really good is "The Moment It Clicks". The first two books are technical books showing you how to get the desired effects. The last one though is the other side of photography; how to put yourself in a position to get a shot and how to develop your eye. HTH!!

I totally agree with Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. He is so easy to understand , interesting and does a great job of not "talking above ones head". He also has several other books out. I think I have them all. He really is a very interesting and easy read.

Check your local library before buying it. I borrowed many many books from my library and sister libraries. I purchased the ones that I really liked, the two from Bryan Peterson already mentioned as well as a photoshop book by Scott Kelby.

I only purchased 3, but I was able to read over 20 it is worth the trip.

I'm also new to the world of DSLRs and a book I picked up was the Magic Lantern guide to my camera. Not only does it give you everything you need to know about your personal camera, it tells you how to get a desired affect step by step, I absolutely love it $19.99 and worth every penny.

I like photography magazines for photography, but not for their Photoshop advice. A lot of times I read their Photoshop-related articles and get a headache -- often the advice is just so wrong or much too simplistic. It is often the equivalent of photography advice such as "Always make sure you shoot with the sun behind you." It is good advice only if you have no ambition to actually get better.

Lately I've been using a P&S but I will be upgrading to a D60 soon and I'd like to start reading up. Other than the manual what other books are good to read? We are headed to WDW in December and I want to know what I'm doing with it once I get there!

I also agree with Understanding Exposure. Really good stuff. I have not read the second one yet, but if it is as good as the first one, go for it!
