This is the Western End of Melbourne city....the Docklands.
Harbour
The city decided that this end of town needed more offices, high rise apartments, an outlet shopping precinct and the drawcard of a
Ferris Wheel.
The Southern Star opened in November 2008. It was operational for all of about 10 weeks over what turned out to be one of the hottest stretch of temperatures Melbourne has experienced in a while. In that 10 week period, we had 10 days of over 40 C (that's roughly 100 F) and the temperature even hit 45 C (approaching 110 F) for about 3 or 4 of those days.
The Southern Star structure cracked and buckled in the heat!
It was shut by February 2009 and has only started to show signs of being repaired this year. It is still a pretty
Dilapidated Ferris Wheel
I also affectionally call the Docklands precinct "Wastelands" because it is pretty cold and windy down this end of town.
Docklands Management have plans in place to revitalise the area...but until then, they are encouraging Melbournians to visit by planning events over the year.
In July, every Friday night is Fireworks night. We were there last Friday and I was hoping for some decent shots.
There was entertainment along the "boardwalk", where I bumped into this!
Zoot Suit (I know it isn't a real Zoot Suit....but it does fit this category).
And finally, after a series of mis-adventures with tripod, camera and events....I think it all came together last Friday fireworks.
So, I'm hoping that you will all think that these are
Gorgeous as well.
The bonus of the night? Well....these are my submissions for....
