Ok technical question for you guys. Why am I getting shots like this, if you look on the bottom left side its blurry, the right side is pretty sharp. This was with my Rokinon 14mm. Is it just me and not having the settings right or is this a lens issue? Happens all the time with this lens.

They are fantastic. Really like third one.... But I'd say you should blow one of them up and frame. What lens were you shooting with? Is that just the natural light?

Thanks havoc! Yes - I'm going to frame one or two of them. I used the Sony Zeiss 24mm 1.8. I started out using a fill flash but didn't like the results then I figured the snow was a giant and all around reflecting board so I went with natural light. At f/2.2 I was able to shoot them all at ISO 100.

I agree, that 3rd shot is amazing Fractal, the 4th also has a brooding drama to it that I'm diggin'.

If she'll let you, I'd definitely frame one of those.

Thanks Rgonzalez! I also like the look in that 4th shot. :)

Mike - It's not just you. I think it may be an issue with the lens.

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

I guess that's what they mean when a lens is de-centered.

Hey Hockey, is this handheld or a tripod? If it's handheld it could be a very subtle hand shift while hitting the shutter which would cause blurriness on one side...but the shutter is on the right side so that wouldn't make sense for the left side to be blurry....I may have talked myself out of this point, disregard :confused3

I normally preface everything with "I'm no pro..." which would obviously apply here

Tripod, and this happens with almost every image out of my Rokinon, sometimes not as noticeable though

Mike, that's probably de-centering. It's widely known with the Samyang 14.

Wow, those are amazing shots brother!

Quick question for my fellow alpha shooters. My little NEX-3N seems to get very grainy past ISO 800. 1,600 is still salvageable with some lightroom edits, but 3,200 looks really bad and anything past that is almost not worth trying.

I'm considering an upgrade to the 5N (would love an A7 II but it's not in the budget as previously discussed), does anyone have any experience using the 5N and it's low light performance? It a big enough improvement to jump up from the 3N or should I just pass the 5 and jump to the 7?

Thanks as always guys

Thank you :thumbsup2

As far as the camera question welcome to every photographers battle for low noise high ISO lol. I cant say for sure on the 2 cameras in question but i can tell you going from the A55 to A99 was a huge jump. The A55 was horrible at 8000 but the A99 is very manageable at that. Once you make the jump to full frame is when you see a major difference in ISO for the most part

I had a NEX 3 and went to the 5N and there was a huge improvement in the high ISO but I'm uncertain where the NEX 3N falls into the equation. I did not think that the difference between the 5N and the 7 was all that significant from what I read but I don't have the 7 either to give a good comparison. Now I actually decided to take advantage of the discounts on the a6000 as I'd like to have the built in viewfinder and flash but I'm actually thinking that one area it'll be a step down is in the high ISO. That and no touchscreen which I like a lot on the 5N.

When you say "7" do you mean NEX-7 or A7? I have the NEX-7 and it seems like it would be a stop better than your 3N.

According to DXO, the sensor performance of the 3N vs. the 5n is very close. ISO not much difference at all. If you want to stick with APS-C you could go to the A5100 and would gain significant ISO performance. I believe it's the same sensor as the A6000, but no viewfinder.

Yes... if you want a good jump in ISO performance without breaking the bank (full frame), the A6000 or A5100 would give very good APS-C ISO.
And though your budget may not be huge, prices on the A7 have fallen tremendously with holiday sales and clearance for the A7ii (meaning used models are even cheaper).

Might still be out of your budget, but the A7 would give the most ISO bang for the buck.
Next down would be the A5100, which probably only costs a little more than the Nex 5N, but will have a nice ISO step up.

I think back to when I was shooting the A55 (and the A100 before that), and I'm really amazed at the leaps I've made in ISO, and how it has completely changed my shooting style. ISO is like money -- no matter how much you have, a little bit more is nice.

Alright off to do some comparisons between the a5100 and a6000! Seems like the main difference is the EVF in the 6000band the dials. Would that be worth the additional money... have to think about it.

Oh and the 6000 has the accessory port which may come in handy as I learn more about taking better pictures (and find new toys to play with :)) Decisions, decisions....

May just wait for the A7 II to drop and see what creeps up on craigslist as people try to sell off older models

Thanks for the tips folks, you're good people :)

While you can skip the viewfinder to save money, I wouldn't easily make that trade. A viewfinder adds 2 very significant benefits:
1. Much easier to stabilize the camera... By holding it against your head, you are turning your body into a tripod.
2. In some bright light conditions, the LCD can be worthless, making you shoot blind. On a bright sunny beach day with my rx100, I had to just point and shoot and guess the composition... I really couldn't see the LCD at all.

Mike, those are some nice shots. I was busy being grabbed and held so I didn't even shoot any rides.

Yes, Great shots Mike. I really like the sand sculpture - So instead of snow, you guys in Florida do that for Christmas? I think I could get used to that.

Here's a shot I forgot about and decided to process it differently...
