Photo sharing: Sony Alpha

hi, i got a sony alphs 200 for xmas.
sorry if this has already been asked, but i havent read through the entire thread (yet). Can someone recommend an affordable lens that goes up to 200/300mm. i specifically want one that goes from 18mm though so i don't have to worry about swapping between lenses. i was thinking of the Tamron AF18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro, anyone have this and would you recommend it?
thanks

Well I'm not sure what you consider 'affordable'...but the one most obvious lens choice to recommend would be the Sony SAL18-250, or the Tamron 18-250 (the Sony lens is essentially a rebadged Tamron with a different grip - Tamron makes some lenses for Sony). The Sony-badged version usually retails around $549, but can likely be found for a little less as it's been out a year or so. The Tamron version might be found a little cheaper. Note too that Tamron recently released a newer version, the 18-270, which has a little more reach...so the 18-250s might be cheaper on close-out sales.

The 18-250 is an excellent all around lens - a wonderful one-lens solution when you don't want to switch lenses all the time. It is my 95% go-to lens up at Disney - rarely ever changing lenses - and lets me shoot wide shots, midrange, telephoto, night shots, landscapes, wildlife/animal, etc all with one lens. Quite versatile, with good quality throughout the range. At any extreme, a dedicated short-range zoom or prime may have slightly better quality - but for covering the range it does, the 18-250 is an amazing piece.

Check out my galleries for lots of samples with this lens - and virtually all Disney gallery shots taken from June 2008 to present were taken with this lens.

If you need cheaper choices, you can also hunt for an older, used 18-200 Tamron...it wasn't quite as versatile, but still plenty usable.

The 55-200 you mentioned should be decent - but it misses out on the range you were hoping to get (the wide end)...I'd probably still pop for the 18-250 Tamron unless the price difference was absolutely huge and out of your range.

oops, just realised i quoted the wrong lens (55-200), have corrected my original post with correct one, thanks for the info - i'll have a look at that lens later

Thanks - I was confused after seeing the post before you corrected!

I'll second zackiedawgs comments. I have the Sony version of the 18-250 which is virtually identical to the Tamron and agree that it's a very good lens. :thumbsup2 And the fact that it's a super zoom makes it an outstanding walk around.

Thank you for sharing your pictures. They're great!

I thought that I'd share some pictures that I took last fall with my Alpha 300. I did have some light challenges (you can see the moon in some of the pictures) and I was taking them on a moving boat. I was happy that they turned out as well as they did with the circumstances.

trust me I've been shooting..Feb 13-March 6th I shot almost 14,000 pics in Orlando...it's going to take forever to process and upload to my website..actually I've been uploading unedited, so my family, friends and co-workers can see them, as I edit I'll replace...

I took the first photo and then decided to have some fun trying to make the shot more interesting.. , so I used a slow shutter speed and then slowly panned the camera upwards during the exposure

I was wondering when we'd get to see some of your trip shots. Sounds like the twins were kept VERY busy! The panning shot is very cool - I like it!

Hopefully I'm allowed to post on this thread. ;) I would have to agree---that's a really cool shot, the Mickey looks 3-D like it's rising up off of the pavement. Very neat :thumbsup2

I, unlike everyone else, have not waited to see your shots...I spent about an hour the other night going through some of them (from the Magic Kingdom) and then saw how many there were and realized they were all dumped in there unedited. Still some great shots---but I figured at the rate I was moving, I'd be going to WDW in December before I got done looking!! :scared: I also tried to PM you once I thought you were supposed to be back---but alas, you inbox was full so I wasn't allowed. :sad2:

Looking forward to seeing more--make sure to post some of them for our viewing pleasure! :goodvibes

it's going to take a while to actually fine tune all of them..

I'm hopiing to get it done before I go back, I bought annual passes for WDW, SeaWorld And the Space Center..

I'm ashamed to say this---but I've never seen SpectroMagic! :guilty: I can't wait to see it on our upcoming trip to WDW. I love the shot of the seahorses, the color is great.

Also - :woohoo:  :cool1: with regards to getting the annual passes to Walt Disney World (and those other places  ) :rotfl: :rotfl2: Very exciting!!
