Just a Big Hole in the Ground
by Allen Castillo, on Flickr
Meteor Crater, about 37 miles or 60 km east of Flagstaff, Arizona.
About 50,000 years ago, a meteorite measuring at least 50 meters across struck this area of Arizona at about 12.8 km/sec. Most of the meteorite vaporized on impact but left this well-preserved crater measuring 1,200 meters in diameter and 170 meters deep. The impact has been estimated at about 10 megatons.
