For the Christmas season......
The relics of the Magi have rested - in a sumptuous golden reliquary - since the 11th century. The bones of the Three Kings are held in a gold casket, elaborately decorated. It is the largest reliquary in the Western world and took 45 years to construct. The Shrine of the Three Kings is behind the main altar and can be seen from most vantage points in the cathedral. The relics were originally in Constantinople, then spent over 800 years in Milan before the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne in 1164.
