photo editing help with Photoshop

i am trying to figure out how to make the outer edges fade so the edges are not so sharp, and cannot figure out in photoshop how to soften the edges only. any suggestions?

This is how I do a soft fade around pictures to soften the edge. I use Photoshop 7.0, so depending on which version you are using it might be a little different.

1. Draw a box around your photo, usually best to draw it just inside the the picture
2. Then under the SELECT menu you want to click on INVERSE. This will then select the area around your photo.
3. Go to the SELECT menu and click on FEATHER
4. A box will come up where you can enter in how big you want the feather to be. I usually do 10 or 20.
5. Click OK
6. The box area you selected will change slightly. With this still selected click DELETE on your keyboard.
7. You can click on Delete more than once until you get the edges as soft as you want.
