Photo contests rule clarification question

I actually have another question about the contest rules.

What's the official stance on frames? A few weeks ago I was asked to remove a frame from one of my entries, and I thought I saw the rules for the following week specifically forbidding frames.

But there's a framed image in this week's contest, so I was just wondering if it's being allowed again?

I just submitted the picture with a frame. I didn't read this beforehand. Oops. I can resubmit it without one if it's an issue.

I like frames, personally, but didn't think they were allowed, so I was just trying to figure out what exactly the guidelines are.

I think frames tend to make pictures look more "professional" and might skew the votes sometimes.

Ah gotcha. I agree about the professional "skew" that it could cause though. It's part of my macro when I process my photos, so I'm used to framing everything.

Oops--I think that would be my picture. I hadn't given much thought to the frames. I've seen others submit them in the contest, so I guess I just assumed it was ok. But then you know what they say when you assume . . . . I'm not too worried about this one looking professional though!

The Photoshop clause says:

Pictures can not be altered, except to crop, resize, or add watermark. This is a photography contest, not an editing contest.

I guess I would argue that a frame does less to alter the picture than cropping. It really isn't "editing" IMO.

you could argue that, but I would respectfully disagree,unless of course you can ad a frame without using any software to do it... adding a frame does indeed give more of a professional/display look than cropping does, it also gives an edge to those with more expensive editing software....

I personally don't agree with cropping since originally the idea was out of camera..pics...


but more to the point..the quote you use...hurts your case rather than helping it

makes it clear that any changes other than those mentioned, are not allowed...


as has been posted many times before,, the originator of the contest set the rules, i fhtye were to be changed t suit everyone who disagrees, there would be no rules... it's simple, the rules are there, anyone wanting to play the game agrees to accept the rules..

have to say i was sorely tempted to reduce noise on my scanned in one, i mean that is the scanner's fault not the camera's, right???? ( one of the of my gigantic disney" catalog" of maybe 6 from when my slr was clicking it's last shutter clicks)

Framing is just part of my macro in photoshop when post processing pictures. The macro doesn't do anything to the picture itself, just frames and resizes the shots. It doesn't alter anything but the size of the picture and the resolution so that I can post on the internet. I believe a black border doesn't detract from a picture, nor does it add anything, but rather allows the viewer to better focus their attention to it.

I'm fine with not adding a border, but at the same time, I'd argue that it doesn't fall into the "no photoshopping" catagory, as you're not altering the photo itself. If you put a picture in a picture frame, you're not altering the photo, you're just presenting it in a better fashion.

But you can't crop, resize or add a watermark without using software either. And frames can be created without expensive software.

I might agree with you if it were not for the fact that in practice the permissible edits have not been so limited. For instance, b&w and sepia conversions have been allowed. And, as has been argued before, that language would appear to exclude any image shot in RAW. Andromedaslove has also said that her intent was really to exclude images that have had distractions cloned out and similar significant edits. IOW, it seems that the list was meant to be illustrative, not exclusive.

I have no wish to make things more difficult for Andromedaslove, and I'd be happy to submit my picture without the frame if it's a problem, but my understanding of the rules as they've evolved wouldn't have precluded the use of frames or borders.
