phone cards ??

just looked up the international call prices for our mobiles and they are a rip off so my mum had the smart idea of buying a phone card over there- i will feel the need to phone home in a peter kay style of `whats the weather like?` and to check on the dog`s progress with the neighbours!!!
do you know where you can buy a phone card from and is it the type you put in a pay phone or can you say use it with the hotel phone??

Something we did that worked for us was to send a text message home to my husband, who then called the hotel direct and gave our room number, they then just put us through. This way the call just goes on our BT phone bill, charges were not that bad that I remember, but then we never chatted for long. We've done this several times from hotels when we have been away.

I'm always nervous of calling out from hotel phones as I know the charges are extortionate.

If your family back home have a mobile on contract you might want to look at http://www.simply-fone.com/ - I've never tried it myself but it appears you can use inclusive minutes to make calls abroad for 'free'.
