What are your phone options while on the ship?
My Mom is asking if we need calling cards and I am thinking they are of no use on the ship. There will be a few in our party that will want to call home a few times to check on family.

Thanks for your help DIS Family!!

No problem! You don't need a calling card, just a credit card. Ship-to-shore phone charges are only $6.75 a minute.

Some cell phones do work...while your at some ports or within a short distance from shore. We had AT&T/Cingular and US Cellular ...and were able to get service in port canaveral (of course)...San Juan...and Nassau. So if any one in your party as a cell phone that may be a better option...but you'll want to check on roaming charges...(if they will be roaming...you may be able to switch to a national plan for a month...while your on vacation)...Or another option would be to get the unlimited internet acess...or pay for internet use each time...I think even that is cheeper than $6.75 per min...That of course only works if whom ever your wanting to keep in touch with also has internet and e-mail.

Our cell phone would not work but we called from payphones at the ports. It was much cheaper than calling from the ship. Our cell phone would not work from St. Maarten or St. Thomas but it did give an automated message that I could buy Caribbean roaming if I stayed on the line. We still used the payphones. You could use calling cards on them I believe.

I didn't make any calls on the ship or in St. Martin or St. Thomas, but did notice a lot of pay phones in both St. Martin and St. Thomas with big red signs saying "No phone cards".
