We are thinking about the Princess Half for 2014. It would possibly be our family of 4(parents and 2 teens). Kind of a senior year celebration for DD who has wanted this as her first ½ ever since she heard about it. pixiedust: I have several questions about this event and running at Disney:

1. How well are runners taken care of compared to “real world” races?

2. When you take the bus at 3 am., how long is the wait before the race starts?

3. I’ve asked another time about discounts on rooms and tickets and haven’t gotten any concrete answers about that. Am I assuming correctly that the RunDisney discounts are probably comparable with regular public discounts? Since there aren’t any days off of school at that time, we would probably only stay a few days…maybe 4 nights/4 day tickets at the most.

4. I notice you have to pay extra for the Race retreat. Are there any post race snacks for people that don’t pay for the race retreat? Besides snacks, what do they have for people that don’t sign up for the race retreat?

5. Is there a charge for bag check? Maybe we could just pack some snacks in our bags for after the race.

6. Are there a lot of people on the course cheering? It seems like I remember seeing some reviews that they are only in the parks. Are there any spectators/entertainment etc. on the roads between the parks?

7. A couple of us may be run/walking it and stopping for character pictures could get us sweeped. How much extra time does it take to stop for character pictures along the way?

8. If you don’t have time on the course to stop for characters…are you able to get pictures with them after the race?

9. Is it a fairly flat course? How many hills?

10. For DH and DS that have run long distances before, how will it be? I’ve heard males are placed in the last corral. Is that true or would their previous times get them somewhere further up? Will it be frustrating for them to run around all the walkers? …of course, I would the the “mostly walking” person in the family and should be in the back. :rotfl2:

11. When does registration usually open for this and does it fill up fast?

Thanks for your help!

1. How well are runners taken care of compared to “real world” races?
Not sure what you mean by "taken care of", but Disney does it up - fireworks, entertainment all along the course, DJ'd party pre-race, great medals, etc. If you mean something more practical, there are water and fuel stops, medical aid tents along the course, and a ton of volunteers to help everyone.

2. When you take the bus at 3 am., how long is the wait before the race starts?
Depends on which corral you're in, as their starts are spaced out. The first corral started at 5:35am this year, and the last corral, H started at 6:24am.

From what I've heard, the GP promos are better, but runDisney's prices are better than no discount on rooms. runDisney ticket,s I'm told are the best price.

4. I notice you have to pay extra for the Race retreat. Are there any post race snacks for people that don’t pay for the race retreat? Besides snacks, what do they have for people that don’t sign up for the race retreat?
Finishers are handed a box of snacks and a banana immediately after finishing. I believe they also had carts selling food and drink. (I did RR, so I ca't say for sure.)

5. Is there a charge for bag check? Maybe we could just pack some snacks in our bags for after the race.
No charge and yes - bring what you normally like post-race.

6. Are there a lot of people on the course cheering? It seems like I remember seeing some reviews that they are only in the parks. Are there any spectators/entertainment etc. on the roads between the parks?
Yep! Not everywhere, but I saw lots of spectators in the TTC area, in MK, around the GF/Poly and in EP.

7. A couple of us may be run/walking it and stopping for character pictures could get us sweeped. How much extra time does it take to stop for character pictures along the way?
Depends on which characters and how many times you stop - I saw long lines for some and short lines for others. I didn't stop at all, so definitely look to another poster for more detail...

8. If you don’t have time on the course to stop for characters…are you able to get pictures with them after the race?
I don't think so...

9. Is it a fairly flat course? How many hills?
VERY flat. The only "hills" are over and underpasses - on the course map, there's a small climb between miles 1 and 2, a dip around mile 5, an overpass/cloverleaf at 10 and one more climb at 12ish. I live and train in flatflatflat coastal FL and didn't think they were all that challenging.

:rotfl2:
Males started in C or back this year. Yes it can be frustrating to get stuck behind slower racers; know going in that Disney races attract racers of all speeds and this is a very real possibility. Best bet is to provide proof of time so as to be placed in the right corral for their expected pace and finish time.

11. When does registration usually open for this and does it fill up fast?
I remember registering in early-mid July, but can't remember when it sold out.

V answered it all perfectly! Here's a few of my additions:

If you start in A- you can stop at every darn character and you are golden! If you start farther back, you just have to gauge your time. We stopped at a lot of pictures- some with mega long lines- (recap in my blog if you want to see how many!) and started in C. Part of the group saw the sweepers and had to hightail it out around mile 9. But it took that long for the stopping to catch up to us.

8. If you don’t have time on the course to stop for characters…are you able to get pictures with them after the race?
I don't think so...

Nope- they are not there after the race. I think there is one or two in the Family area, so you might be able to get a couple with your medals, but I have never gone to those lines. And they are lines post race! And pre race when they've been there!

1. How well are runners taken care of compared to real world races?

Not quite sure what you mean here. Disney provides water, poweraid, and bathrooms approximately every 1-1.5 miles. After the race, there is a "runners box" of what I consider birdfood. It's all gluten free, a lot of it vegan. I would rather have a bagel. But, there are still bananas and poweraid at the finish.

2. When you take the bus at 3 am., how long is the wait before the race starts?

You will be on the bus for about half an hour, then have to walk to the first staging area. You will be there 45 minutes or so if you were on the first bus before you can head to your corrals. It's about a 20 minute walk to the corrals, and then anywhere from half an hour to an hour to start depending on the corral you are in. There are plenty of port o potties in the corral area.

3. Ive asked another time about discounts on rooms and tickets and havent gotten any concrete answers about that. Am I assuming correctly that the RunDisney discounts are probably comparable with regular public discounts? Since there arent any days off of school at that time, we would probably only stay a few days&maybe 4 nights/4 day tickets at the most.
There are discount tickets which are definitely worthwhile, but in the past, the room discounts have not been much better than the regular room discounts that come out later.

4. I notice you have to pay extra for the Race retreat. Are there any post race snacks for people that dont pay for the race retreat? Besides snacks, what do they have for people that dont sign up for the race retreat?
You get the runners box I mentioned before. At the Race Retreat, there is more substantial food, character photo ops, private bathrooms, and places to sit. If it's raining or freezing, it may be worth it, but you can't predict the weather.
5. Is there a charge for bag check? Maybe we could just pack some snacks in our bags for after the race.

No, no charge.

6. Are there a lot of people on the course cheering? It seems like I remember seeing some reviews that they are only in the parks. Are there any spectators/entertainment etc. on the roads between the parks?
They are at the TTC, in the parks, and along the course near the Poly and Grand Floridian.

7. A couple of us may be run/walking it and stopping for character pictures could get us sweeped. How much extra time does it take to stop for character pictures along the way?
Depends on the character. Some lines, like the villains, may end up costing you as much as 20 minutes. Others, like Princess Atta, may have no line at all.

8. If you dont have time on the course to stop for characters&are you able to get pictures with them after the race?
There are usually a few princesses after the race, but no where near the amount on the course.

9. Is it a fairly flat course? How many hills?
Very flat, three main hills. The first is by the Contemporary, the second (and worst) is a clover shaped on ramp at Mile 10. At mile 11.5 there is another, small on ramp.

10. For DH and DS that have run long distances before, how will it be? Ive heard males are placed in the last corral. Is that true or would their previous times get them somewhere further up? Will it be frustrating for them to run around all the walkers? &of course, I would the the mostly walking person in the family and should be in the back. :rotfl2:
Males are placed in corral C or later, not the last corral. With the new proof of time requirements, it shouldn't be too bad for him.

11. When does registration usually open for this and does it fill up fast?

July 9th, and it usually takes a month or two.

Thanks for your help!

OP I'm doing the PHM for the first time this year so I can't help you with your questions but check out the RunDisney website there's quite a bit of information there. I'd also check out some RunDisney blogs or Trip Reports here on the DIS (search RunDisney on pinterest and a ton of blogs come up). Reading up on things like this are a good to way to know what to expect come raceday :thumbsup2

Oops, got it confused with Tinkerbell. It's weird that it starts first when Tink is a month beforehand...

Thanks for your responses so far. If anyone else can let me know what they think of the race that would be great!

I think by "taken care of"...I meant some of the things I was more specific about in my questions: snacks after the race, spectators pumping you up, support along the race course. The race retreat thing was concerning me. Paying an additional $400 for the family seemed like a bit much to go to that. I'm glad to see that they do have some food for the others.

I think DD and DH will be doing it. I need to figure out if it's worth the extra $ for DS and myself to do it too. We probably would be spending all the money we usually use for spring break if we do this and it would just be a long weekend instead of a whole week. I'm sure it would be an amazing family memory though!

Can you get the Run Disney ticket discount without using their room discount? Maybe use the GP room discount and Run Disney ticket discount...

Yes, you can. If you are on the fence and haven't done a distance event, I would suggest checking out the 5k. It will have fireworks, characters, and a lot of the same feel, but it doesn't require quite the commitment and is much cheaper. Then you could be part of the crowd cheering in Magic Kingdom for your DD and DH the next day!

It would be! I'd really consider it- tons of fun to runDisney as a family! Though it is pricey- yes.

Yes you can. I do this. The GP room discount and then the runDisney ticket discount- which is really nice!

Gotcha. I did a race recap in my blog, if you're interested: 2013 PHM Race Recap

I think runDisney does superior job of putting together races that WOW! They offer a ton of entertainment and really make participants feel very special.

I did race retreat because A. the rest of my group was doing it, and B. I was in WDW the morning of the infamous 2010 WDW half-marathon - when it SNOWED. Okay, more like sleet, but still - freezing cold and wet. It was nothing like that this year, but I wanted to have shelter, just in case. I likely won't get it ever again; I plan to stage my own "retreat" in my car for the 2014 WDW half, lol!

Can you get the Run Disney ticket discount without using their room discount? Maybe use the GP room discount and Run Disney ticket discount...
Yep! My roommates and I stayed on DVC points but they bought their tickets through runDisney. (I'm a local AP holder, so I've never bought rD tickets.)

Hi there,
You can certainly get the ticket discount without using the room discount and vice verse. We stayed at OKW on DVC points this past year for PHM and still got a discount on the park passes. And there are others who don't stay on property at all and still get the ticket discount because they are running. You can also purchase a ticket pack at the race expo. We didn't do this because we didn't know about it so we purchased a two day ticket ahead of time, But when we got to the expo we say they were selling three day tickets really cheap ( don't quote me, but I think it was like $120 per person for a three day pass???, maybe someone else remembers more clearly)

As far as the Race Retreat, that is definitely not required. All that is is a tent set up near the finishline with breakfast food. In my honest opinion, it might be nicer for your family to hop on the monorail after the race and have a character breakfast at one of the resorts. It might be fun for you and your family to get some great pictures with the characters with your newly earned medals. The characters will make a big deal about that!

I invite you to click on our blog below: We have several reviews of the PHM from the past several years. Once on the main page of the blog, click on "Disney Races and Beyond" tab. Then scroll down and look for the PHM race you'd like to read about.

Good luck you you!

1. How well are runners taken care of compared to “real world” races?

My sister has experience with half-marathons. She said bar none, this race (the WDW Half) was the best racing experience she's ever had.

As far as my own experience, as a bone fide back-of-the-packer, there was plenty of water, powerade, biofreeze, clif stuff, and cheerleaders for the rest of us. :)

2. When you take the bus at 3 am., how long is the wait before the race starts?

At least 2 hours...longer if you are not in the first corral. It goes fast though and the bus/bag drop off is a good walk away from the starting line.

4. I notice you have to pay extra for the Race retreat. Are there any post race snacks for people that don’t pay for the race retreat? Besides snacks, what do they have for people that don’t sign up for the race retreat?

There is a box of edible goodies at the end. I don't remember water but I don't remember a lot from those moments. I was in quite a haze and I was crying a fair bit. I only remember the box because it was unusual compared to the bagels and bananas I'm used to seeing in 5K land.

6. Are there a lot of people on the course cheering? It seems like I remember seeing some reviews that they are only in the parks. Are there any spectators/entertainment etc. on the roads between the parks?

Not as many as in the parks. The parks are packed. But yeah there are. Especially around the hotels some people come out to watch. There are bands. I remember there was a display of kites. Parade floats set up on the side. Character photo ops. You don't stay bored for long.

At least comparatively speaking. I only have one half to go by but my sister was in awe at the numbers. In her other races it's just miles and miles of nothing and nobody sometimes.

7. A couple of us may be run/walking it and stopping for character pictures could get us sweeped. How much extra time does it take to stop for character pictures along the way?

Depends on the character. I run/walk a 14 minute mile on a GREAT day so I didn't take any chances and didn't dare take photos with any characters. I did stop to take photos OF characters though. Especially characters I had never seen before and characters in rare costumes.

I finished the race at 3:30:26 without a single photo op or potty break. If I actually stopped it probably would have eaten up most, if not all, of the time I had saved by not being in the last corral. I thought those banked minutes would be better spent on a trip to a first aid tent or the toilet if necessary. I didn't think that I would be fast enough to make up the difference...and I was right.

8. If you don’t have time on the course to stop for characters…are you able to get pictures with them after the race?

I don't know about the princess. If you could at the WDW Half, I either completely missed it or they were out of there by the time I crossed OR there was a character, I didn't want to go near him/her with my sweaty self, and completely forgot about it.

9. Is it a fairly flat course? How many hills?

Not bad at all. I don't remember how many hills exactly. I do remember going up two highway ramps. But it wasn't the incline that got to me. It was how much the road BANKS. I've never come across THAT before anywhere in my training and it really killed my ankles.

Also heading towards the TTC after passing the MK toll booth, there is a bridge. The course goes under the bridge. It's a very steep hill down and a very steep hill up.

That's all I can remember...and it all assumes the course will be the same.

10. For DH and DS that have run long distances before, how will it be? I’ve heard males are placed in the last corral. Is that true or would their previous times get them somewhere further up? Will it be frustrating for them to run around all the walkers? …of course, I would the the “mostly walking” person in the family and should be in the back.

For what it's worth, my group placed in the following.

My two sisters, who can each do this distance in 2 hours, placed in Corral A.
My brother is slower than my sisters, but much faster than I am. To the best of my knowledge he had no proof of time to submit (I could be very wrong). He was put in Corral D.
I did have a 10K time to submit. But like I said before I do 14 min/mile pace on my best days. My 10K time was also my personal best pace for any race (just UNDER 14). I was put in Corral E (I'm female btw).

Because the Princess is a race for women...I don't know. It's possible the men may be last because of the theme of this race but I've never heard of that before. I don't think the last corral would be big enough to hold all of the men...

11. When does registration usually open for this and does it fill up fast?

Probably May....I'd follow the RunDisney page on Facebook or their official twitter. That's how I find out when. They always announce the date and time ahead of time.

As long as they don't announce anything new like a 10K race, think it takes a few weeks to fill up. The addition of new medals caused the DL Half to sell out in a day. But there are multiple half races throughout the year in WDW.

If you know you are going to register anyway, you might as well do it as soon as you can. Nothing like procrastinating and either getting shut out or have to pay a higher entrance fee.

Just wanted to add that I was AMAZED and moved by the spectator support along the course. All the cheering family and friends that hauled themselves out of bed at a ridiculous hour and braved the transportation to cheer on their loved ones AND everyone else was just beyond my expectations.

Race retreat was a nice to have but not a need to have for me. There was a full hot breakfast there after the race, but food was the last thing I wanted to see after finishing that run. It took a couple of hours before I could eat anything substantial, so the food provided there was wasted on me!

Edited to add: I've got a four part recap of the race including the retreat in my blog linked below if you want details and pictures. There are lots of awesome race recaps out there on other blogs too!

11. When does registration usually open for this and does it fill up fast?

Thanks for your help!

1. I don't have any long races to compare to, I'm not doing my first non-runDisney half until October, but I felt we were treated very well. I was very intimidated with this year being my first time and I thought Disney laid things out so well.

2. We got to the staging area around 3:30 am, we had group pics with our running group and got a pep talk from Sean Astin, then checked our bags, line for the portapotties, then the walk to corrals. This all took less than two hours. We were waiting in the corrals for about 20-25 mins before the first runners went. But that sure beats sitting on a bus in traffic if you decide to leave later.

3. As far as room discounts go, I think they are comparable, if not a bit more than other discounts. I didn't book our room this year, my friend did and I know she did a lot of searching and number play. I'm not sure if she went with the RD rack rate or something like AP. But park tickets are pretty cheap through RD. I spent 4 days at the park, park hopper, and I accidentally added on the water park and DTD stuff, and I paid under $200 for my ticket after taxes.

4. They do give you some food, bird seed IMO. They hand out boxes after the finish line. This year is had a banana, crackers and hummus dip, a bit of chocolate, and some trail mix type thing. I didn't eat most of it. They also hand you a bottle of water and a bottle of Poweraid. There is a tent where you can get a massage, I think it's a dollar a minute. I'm not sure what RR had to offer.

5. No, no charge for bag check. I was warned not to pack anything of importance, just in case, but I had no problems with anything missing from my bag when I picked it up. You can pack anything you want for the post race, snacks included.

6. There are a lot of areas where there is nobody. When you pass the monorail resorts there are some people, there were a bunch the first half mile of the race, but not a whole lot between there and the parking lot of MK. I think I remember seeing people around the Contemporary, then all along Main Street USA. They taper off again once you get to the castle. I remember passing a bunch of people, mostly CMs, around the GF and more people by the Poly. I think I remember firefighters around mile 7-8, volunteers here and there. There are definitely stretches where there are pretty much no spectators though. I didn't pay much attention to them either way.

7. This year the lines seemed soooo long for characters. I only stopped 3 times, and not once before mile 10. Some of the lines looked 10+ mins long and I didn't want to stop that long. But I know plenty of people who ran/walked, stopped for lots of pics, and didn't get swept. I'd worry more about that if you are in one of the very last corrals.

8. Not unless you find them in the parks. There are no characters around after the race. I did notice that the last few sets of characters, the Army Guy, Mulan, Mrs. Incredible, all between 10-12 miles, had pretty much no wait. Those are the only ones I stopped for, and I was in line and done, taking off again, in less than a minute.

9. Yes. 3 hills if I remember correctly, and they are all overpasses. After you hit mile 10 and reach the Army guy, you go up a jug handle to an overpass, and this is a hill. FYI, the army guy tells you to keep pushing, it's your last hill. The army guy is a dirty rotten lair ;) It's the first of 3, and if you don't know he's lying, you end up cursing him when you get to the second hill. If you are like me, you curse him out loud lol.

10. Males are not put into the last corral. This year they could start as high as corral C. So if they have decent enough times, they can start that far up. They may run into walkers regardless of where they are, and this was a hot button topic regarding the race, the extreme dodging of people.

11. Registration this year opens June 11. Last year it opened July 10 and filled up I think at the end of November/beginning of December, I think it was close to Thanksgiving. So plenty of time.

Thanks so much for all the information and links to your blogs.

Another question. Has anyone registered as a team? Do they put you in the same corral. I'm not sure if we would go the same pace, but it might be nice to start out close together. I think at least 2 of us would want to be together for it. Any disadvantage to registering as a team?

The Princess is my favorite Disney race so far, even though I loved the marathon. You really do feel like a Princess! You've gotten a lot of great answers so far, so I'd just recommend planning extra time for the expo, so you can see everything you want to see. They have some speakers and they are great to listen to. The Princess was my first half marathon and now I'm addicted to races! It's the perfect first race!

I didn't register as a team, but if someone in your group is in an earlier corral, they can move backwards into another corral. You just can't move forwards!
