PHM 2015-In Pursuit of Cupcakes While Running in Glass Slippers

Karen~ I just read your race recap from the PHM 2014 and you got me sooooo excited for 2015! I loved your photos. I am all about my DSLR, I don't even own a point n shoot because they make me so mad. I had thought about how I would take pictures while running so it was nice to read how you managed and what you thought of all that. Congrats, I was so inspired reading how you pushed through your injury and how hard you had trained. So fun to read!

Thanks!!! :goodvibes

Glad you are back Tammie, the race sounds like fun!

Cupcake Friday
(As if just being Friday was not sweet enough)

Grand Floridian Bakery's S'mores Cupcake
Gasparilla Grill & Games

Now that we are finished with cupcakes in the Magic Kingdom let’s do a little resort hopping around the Magic Kingdom…one of my favorite things to do starting with one of the prettiest of all resorts…the Grand Floridian!

Who knew that Grand Floridian actually had a bakery? But then again this cupcake is found in one of the refrigerated cases at Gasparilla Grill and Games in the Grand Floridian Resort.

Gasparilla Grill and Games is actually nestled between the Kids Club and the oh so yummy, Grand Floridian Café (love the breakfast there…Lobster Eggs Benedict) and serves the GF as the QS location. While I am not too fond of having to deal with video games and cupcakes, I suppose one could take their cupcake outside in the sunny Florida afternoon and enjoy this view…

and maybe a little drink to hydrate ourselves!

So enough about the GF, let’s talk about the GF S’mores Cupcake.

There are lots of S’more cupcakes in WDW, this is just the GF version.

A chocolate cupcake with an icing that is “more like a super creamy chocolate mousse” then frosting. According to both Disney Food Blog and the Pixie Dust Girl the icing is the best part of the cupcake. The icing is topped with “roasted” marshmallows and a graham cracker. According to the Disney Food Blog…

The “roasted” marshmallows on top were a cute addition, but the whole thing was a soggy mess. The graham cracker on top felt (and kind of tasted, let’s be honest) like wet newspaper, and while the marshmallows were toasted on the top, they were still cold non-toasted marshmallows throughout.

The chocolate cupcake is then filled with a dark chocolate ganache. In case you don't know what ganache is, it's like this delicious chocolate-y substance with a consistency between icing and solid chocolate.

This cupcake gets mixed reviews a thumbs up from Pixie Dust Girl and a solid thumbs down from the Disney Food Blog…

With so many different versions of this cupcake, maybe we should save the S’Mores Cupcake for the very best version and find something else in that refrigerated case to enjoy the view with…

Your thoughts?

What are people's plans for the weekend? Any runs? There should be bunny hop races :).

I have to run 12 miles tomorrow. DH is going to join me for about 8 of them. We'll be at my parents' house in PA and there are some crazy hills in their neighborhood so it should be a good workout. There is something so nice about knowing that I get to take walk breaks during the run!

Oh man. I'm kinda disappointed that this cupcake got some negative reviews...

By all accounts, the picture & the description look yummy! There is something about a chocolate cupcake filled with chocolate... with chocolate mousse that makes me say YUM. But the bad reviews are sad.... :(

So I would say- with all the other options available- why waste the stomach space on this one?

I agree- skip.

Wow- just read all 45 pages! You guys are very inspiring. I wouldn't describe myself as a "runner" but I think I want to change that. I did a 5k a few years ago, got the t-shirt & crossed it off the bucket list. I've been thinking about signing up for the princess half in 2015 b/c running through Disney just sounds fun! Even with the whole running part. Thanks for sharing your ap recommendations - looking into the Galloway & ismooth run to see which will work better for me. I can totally get behind a group motivated by cupcakes, personally, I always have a few in the freezer to defrost when a cupcake emergency strikes. I'm already scoping out local 10k's for late summer/early fall so I can get in a timed corral. Hopefully, my motivation holds up!

WOW...I can't believe that you read all 45 pages...I can't believe that this PTR of mine has exploded this way! Glad to welcome you to part of our group should you decide to run...the more people the better in my opinion....everyone gets supported and uplifted!

Any girl that has cupcakes for an emergency in their freezer...:worship:

Tammie - Safe travels and GL with your 5K...I still haven't signed up for mine yet...5 more days to get my butt in gear and just DO it already. I'm such a giant baby chicken.

Thank you for wishes! Come on just do it...I was very nervous about it but I picked a good one to get back in training with and forgot how much I loved the nervous energy and excitement...

About the "time of the month" issues...oddly, I seem to be opposite everyone. I run so much better. I think it's b/c during that week I tend to have severe lower back pain, and running helps me with that. I feel lighter on my feet. I do get headaches after running during that week though, so I'm not sure what that's all about.

Yay...at least someone has something good about that time...

On the training front...
This week I added in a 20 minute "yoga for runners" session that I found on Youtube when I got home from my run, and my muscle soreness/stiffness is practically zero now.

I did three miles of run/walking on a new trail yesterday. It's wooded and lovely with a stream running around it. It passes under the interstate and around a golf course. I didn't get murdered by a stranger beneath the overpass, so I consider it a success (and you better believe I ran full out under there too...it was kind of creepy-ish. But I watch a lot of Investigation Discovery channel). I wasn't happy with my time, but I'm chalking that up to being in a new environment, and it being the warmest morning so far this year. Or maybe I'm just a slow turtle. That's very likely.

Sounds like a lovely place to run...I so understand about worrying about things happening to me while I run...a scary feeling.

Oh, and on the subject of cupcakes...One of our local bakeries that was featured on Cupcake Wars (we lost in the first round :( ) had a key lime on the menu this week. I had a good workout that day so I had one and it was DELIGHTFUL.

A great way to celebrate...now you need to post a picture!

While I love a good s'more, I wouldn't want to risk eating a cupcake with a bad review. Ha ha. Sometimes though you just have to try things for yourself. I've never even been to visit the Grand Floridian. I might would try to the cupcake just for the atmosphere.

Tammie - the Bluebell run sounded great! I'm glad your shins held out for the race.

My kids are out of school today and Monday! We are all happy for a little break. Of course both of my big kids have a baseball game today. But at least I will be able to enjoy the games instead of rushing to each of them and missing part of one or the other.

My poor lemon cupcake... no love for it!

No fear my running friends- should this somehow appear in the cupcake run, I will eat it for you.

That's what cupcake running friends are for...

"For good cupcakes. And bad cupcakes. I'll eat them all forever more.... That's what cupcake friends are for....."

;)

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

I think I want a little bite...only if you sing that song!

Way to take one for the team! Lol

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Ran the Legoland 5k with DS this morning. We had to leave the hotel by 5:30 so it was reminiscent of a WDW race but UGH it was early!

Great job...sounds like a fun place to run at! Early morning is no fun...

I finished my 10 K yesterday. I haven't seen the official results, but I didn't think it was terrible for my 1st time running that distance. I was however the very last person to cross the finish line. The Jr. High cheerleaders were there cheering for me just like everyone else. This was a small local race and everyone was encouraging and supportive.

Tammy - great job on the Blue Bell run! I hope your trip back home is safe!

Great job on your 10K...I have not done a 10K yet. Hoping to get one in this summer and then one in the fall for PHM time!

I am sure you did not do terrible...you got out there and gave it your best!!! I love races where you are being cheered on...

Congrats on your first 10k and for Tammy running as well! It doesn't matter when you finish just as long as you finish. As they say, finishing is winning! I wish there were more 10ks, that is such a great distance. Up by me, there are very few. 10ks and 15ks are just enough of a challenge.

I had to run 16 miles on Saturday and it was awesome! I have been following the Galloway method for my long runs and it is amazing how good I feel and I am still able to keep a great pace. I ran my first 6 miles with some friends so there were no walk breaks. Then I did the last 10 miles by myself and felt strong. In fact, my last mile was a fast 8:45 pace with a walk break in there! I couldn't believe it! I rewarded myself with a nice treat on Sunday, ice cream! I cannot eat much after a long run so Saturday was not a good day to eat treats.

WOW...great distance! I wonder if I will ever be up to that kind of a challenge. Although Debra has got me started thinking marathon...but I think maybe I need to see about doing the 1/2 thing first! Super pace :worship:

I talked to DH some more this weekend about the Glass Slipper Challenge and he is on board! We are starting to research flights and figure out when I should book our rooms, I can book AKL at 11 mths and then switch to BW at the 7 mth mark or I can hold out and book BW at the 7 mth mark. Not sure what I want to do yet, but I am so excited to run it!

I already know my costume for the Princess Half, Mary Poppins!

YAY...glad to have another cupcake on board with us...Karen & Amy need someone who runs faster than me!

Congratulations on your 10K!! :cool1:

Great job with your run this weekend! Nice pace!

Glad your hubby is officially on board for PHM weekend! I have no idea where I am staying yet. Tammie & I have talked briefly about AKL renting points, but nothing has been decided. Otherwise, I might end up back at POR or POFQ...but splurging for a monorail resort would be nice too. :confused3

Yea for costumes! I think I have all 3 of mine figured out...but they are all subject to change a million more times.

Am I driving you crazy Debra not wanting to think about resorts...doing the double digit dance for Rome trip...so that makes it closer to double digit resort decision...although after I saw the TCU costs...I maybe slipping in a box somewhere!

Thanks! I was really happy with the pace. I have a Ragnar Relay in May so I have been following a marathon plan for it. My total mileage is around 20 miles so it is almost a marathon.

What are you planning for your costumes? 3? Are you doing the 5K too?

My sister and I are dressing as the Incredibles for our Lake Placid Half Marathon. We plan on dressing as Mike and Sulley for our Hartford Half and our Philadelphia Full marathons. For the Philadelphia marathon last year, we dressed as Dory. Well we had tutus that were blue and yellow and wore blue shirts with Dory and "Just Keep Swimming" on them. It was fun and people found it easy to cheer for us because they could yell, "nice tutus" "Go Dory!" It was so fun.

Love the JUST KEEP SWIMMING!!!

Ran 1.5 miles today, it was terrible! I could not get a good rhythm. Tomorrow is another day. I need to get off my tushy and get my diet and running under control. I've been a train wreck the last month.

I had been doing so good...but lately I am a train wreck too!

On the cupcake front. I wish payday would get here! I am ordering the cherry blossom and cherry cheesecake cupcakes from Georgetown cupcakes. DH used to work in DC and surprised me with them last year. They only have the cherry blossom 2 months out of the year, and I love them!

That sounds yummy...need pictures!

What is relatively close? I am always looking.

Here's how my food plan is going today -- my coworker brought in TWO Kringle today, raspberry and cinnamon. So much for sticking to my usual Quest bar and tea for breakfast, but SO good.

LOVE KRINGLES!

We missed Music Monday but I want to make an 80s playlist - give me your favorites. Mainstream or otherwise:)

Great Music Monday question...

I love the Rock of Ages Soundtrack! LOL...most of my playlist is 80s music! I am a girl of the 80s...

Ok. I did it. I signed up for the 5K on May 10th. My 10 year old is running the kids' one mile event.

It took a lot of guts for me to do this. I'm a chicken.

First step on the path to PHM 2015 has been taken :)

YAY...we are here to support you each step of the way. You can do this!

Ah, the going out too fast dilemma. It happens to everyone. A couple of years ago I ran a half marathon, one I have done before. I started too close to the front so I was running with the fast runners. I was going at a 7 min/mile pace, faster than I have ever run and I was feeling great! I remember saying to myself, "wow, if I can keep this pace, I will blow my PR out of the water!" Well, I held that pace until mile 8, then all hell broke loose. I burned my glycogen store, I didn't have gels with me to eat, I was feeling like crap and I dropped to a 10 min/mile pace. I felt so sick and had to stop and walk a few times because I was on the verge of getting sick. Then it happened, 40 yards from the finish line I threw up. Thankfully there was a garbage can that I made it to, but there were crowds all around and the medics came over. I was worried they wouldn't let me finish, but they did, they just rode their bikes behind me. My husband didn't see what happened so he was trying to snap pictures of me and I felt like crap but was trying to smile. I finished with a good time still, but it was not fun. A month later I ran another half marathon. I wasn't going to make the same mistake so I picked up a pace bracelet at the Clif Bar table. I was paying very close attention to my pace and made sure I keep it nice and slow and even in the beginning. I finished that race 5 mins faster than the half from hell and I started off at a slower pace. Pace means everything! You can make pace bracelets online for any distance. It is nice to wear one as a reminder or write your pace on your hand to remind yourself to slow down. Or you can take walk breaks in the first mile to make sure you don't go out too fast.

Sorry for the novel! Oh and you are not nutty for scoping out the course. I always look at the course maps and elevation changes so I know what is coming. I do like to not run a course too much before a race because then it is fresh on race day and I find my mind is distracted by looking at the course and not thinking about the actual run. So I would advise you to not train too often on the course.

Great story and advice. Now I am trying to figure out what a pace band is? I have set my playlist in 1 mile sets...I have figured out where I want to be at each mile and have put a song there reflecting the mood/mile...so while I am running I know that my mapmyrun and music should be syncing in time...does that make sense?

Ohhhh Tammie! Come back to us and tempt us with your yummy cupcake pictures! If Nicole and I are left to our devices, we may just end up posting booze pictures instead and disrupting the whole flow of cupcake land.

Booze might be good with the week I am having...thanks for missing me!

I have no idea what I'm talking about. See?!?! I'm lost without you Tammie! come back to us with sugary goodness! :bitelip:

Nice to be missed!

Yhea, you are back! :dance3:

Great mileage this month so far!!!

Thanks...glad you missed me!

And GREAT race-recap. Those bluebells are so pretty!

The flowers were awesome...did you know that they are actually "weeds" but are the Texas State Flower...

You did awesome running that race! Way to go!!!!

Hope life slows down a little for you coming up..... we miss you!

I wish it would slow down...but sadly the next 6 weeks are the roughest with work and just general family life...wait till your girls get older and into every activity there is...UGH! Plus it is my busy time at work filing end of year reports...Plus I still have this pesky Rome trip that I have not gotten planned completely...when I GOT RID OF MY OCD PLANNING WAYS LAST FALL WITH DISNEY IT HAS EFFECTED all planning....

I did Tammie!!! I was going to point it out to you! I'm crazy excited about it!!!!! :)

GREAT MINDS...I just wish it had more "STUFF" I love the papers though!

Great race recap! Looks like a fun race and you gotta love ice cream at the end. Hope your shins continue to improve!

That race looks like it was a lot of fun!

Sounds like you had a good race overall, congrats! Now I need to find a race local to me that gives out ice cream that the end! :thumbsup2

Thanks...ice cream before and after was so much fun...

Yea Tammie is back! I was so happy to see you had sent me a FB message during my run on Saturday telling me about your race. I knew I wouldn't be able to respond, so I waited until I was done to read it. You really did great!!

And I forgot to respond when you responded...:rotfl2:

Hills are EVIL!! I am dreading mile 6-ish in my race on the 27th due to something called "gorilla hill" :scared:

I love my Gymboss too. Use it each & every run! So many people put their watches on "beep" & you can never tell which one belongs to who, but with the Gymboss it is nice to have the vibrate so I can always feel when the interval change is.

I love the vibrate mode too! I am sure I annoyed people with my beeping at the race...I kept getting looks when it went off! LOL

What are people's plans for the weekend? Any runs? There should be bunny hop races :).

Mass this afternoon, Dying eggs with the kids tomorrow, Mass on Sunday...BBQ with the in laws...and sometime in there running! Been awful about running this week...No races for me...but I did sign up for my next 5K thanks to Cammy a week from today! UGH

I have to run 12 miles tomorrow. DH is going to join me for about 8 of them. We'll be at my parents' house in PA and there are some crazy hills in their neighborhood so it should be a good workout. There is something so nice about knowing that I get to take walk breaks during the run!

Walk breaks are the only thing that saves me...YOU GO GIRL ON THAT 12 MILES!

While I love a good s'more, I wouldn't want to risk eating a cupcake with a bad review. Ha ha. Sometimes though you just have to try things for yourself. I've never even been to visit the Grand Floridian. I might would try to the cupcake just for the atmosphere.

WE MUST CHANGE THAT...the GF is so pretty! I am not sure I would ever want to stay there, but I love visiting!

Tammie - the Bluebell run sounded great! I'm glad your shins held out for the race.

Me too...this week they have decided that since there is no race...well...you can guess

My kids are out of school today and Monday! We are all happy for a little break. Of course both of my big kids have a baseball game today. But at least I will be able to enjoy the games instead of rushing to each of them and missing part of one or the other.

2 of my 3 are out of school on Monday...but I have to work and 1 has to go to school! LOL...yep, we are a 4 different school district calendar house...

Yay for getting to enjoy the games this weekend!

Whew...finally caught back up on my own PTR! I love how you girls are so chatty and love to share/support!

Now to VENT a little...and maybe lick my wounds! I had a terrible experience with the doctor the other day and it has taken me a few days to recover from the blow...

A few weeks ago I decided that it was time to go talk to a foot/ankle doctor about my reoccurring/persistent shin issues, maybe the cause had to lie within my feet. Tuesday, was the day and with nervousness (along with a strange gut feeling I was not going to get answers) I went. I have to say this doctor is prompt, because right on time I was whisked back to a room where I met with the PA where I explained my dilemma, problems, and what I wanted from this appointment. Without asking too many questions, he sent me back to x-ray and less than 10 minutes later came back and told me there was nothing wrong from the x-rays (duh, I knew that). So he started going down a checklist on things to do for shin splints, all which I have done and are doing. Again, I asked him could it be something with my shoes or my feet in general. I basically shoved my shoes in his face and asked should I be wearing these? He ignored me and then gave me THE LECTURE…basically telling me that I am a 40 something overweight female who really has no business running in the first place that maybe I should be listening to my body and if it has been over a year of shin splints that it was time to give up with the notion of running. Again, I shoved my shoes in his face and asked him to look at my feet…which he did not because he wanted to but because I basically demanded it. His verdict was that maybe I should were a neutral shoe that I tend to be somewhat flat footed. HUH, that was not what the sports medicine doctor told me (and the running store) last July when I developed the stress fracture and again he LECTURED again about maybe I should listen to my body and not run. I gave up in defeat trying to get him to understand what I wanted and needed from him, cursing myself that I did not go to the run store in Austin when I had a chance and leaving with $50 less in my pocket and holding back tears.

He did give me a prescription for PT sessions, which I don't need because I am not injured at the moment plus told me they could do an orthotic shoe fitting if I wanted to run in those...

So here I am again...shin issues and no answers. I will be in the Dallas area in a few weeks so I am going to look for a running store with a gait anaylsis computer.

What are people's plans for the weekend? Any runs? There should be bunny hop races :).

My plans are for P90X on Saturday w/ a group for work. Sunday we will be having Easter Brunch @ Fleming's Steakhouse and then I'll have my W8D3 run in the afternoon.

Oh man. I'm kinda disappointed that this cupcake got some negative reviews...

I also had that cupcake last year during our 4th of July Trip & I agree, it wasn't a good cupcake. The icing was too thick and kinda bland & I love S'mores.

Could it possibly be your calf rather than your shin? The sports medicine guy that comes to my work weekly was able to pretty much eliminate that pain for me in 3 10 minutes sessions of some massage techniques on my shin/calf. It was a painful type of massage but it workout the tightness well. I would work with the sports medicine guy more than the foot doctor, if I were you as while everyone is at different parts of their fitness journey, no one should be told they should just stop because it isn't for you.

The doctor shouldn't have been that rude about it all. I would totally make sure to go to a running store with gait analysis to make sure you have the right type of shoe. My new shoes have helped me as well! $120 well spent.

Oh Tammie- I''m mad FOR you. What nerve does ANY doctor telling ANYONE they should not get out and run?!?! Boo on him. I'm glad you are not listening to his advice.

You do what you said you are going to do- go to the running store and get accessed.....that is the right answer!

Boo. On. Him. :(

If you need cheering up, I have come up with a complimenting alcohol plan to our cupcake crawl on my PTR. :) We can add in there some awesomely planned drunken poses to scrapbook! Think we could get KellyBell to make a 'running/cupcake/drunk' scrap kit? Seems like a natural bestseller?! No? Hahahahaha!!!! :rotfl:

Hope your days/week/month start looking up! Seems lots of us are in 'funks' right now right now with different stuff......... I had a horrible run yesterday that made me doubt all ability to do ANY races. I hate runs like that!!!

That doctor is an ******! Sorry for my french, but he is not listening to you and your concerns! I would switch doctors ASAP because lots of people run who are older and overweight, well, because that is how you lose weight and get healthier. I would definitely get to the running store and see what they say about your shoes. Another thing I would do is ask around for another doctor, perhaps if you know a fellow runner in the area. I have gone to PT on and off over the past few years and I found a PT through friends who works with athletes (usually they say it on their website) so he knew what I wanted to be able to do. I also see a massage therapist who works with athletes and that has helped a ton. My podiatrist also has patients who run so he fitted me with new orthotics recently that his marathoning patients like and I really like them. He always had me bring my sneakers in and talks about them and how they are working and tells me to keep away from certain types. Really, you need to "shop around" until you find the doctor who will listen to you and your concerns. I think PT still may be a good idea because there may be calf muscle issues that they can help you with that could help with the shin splints. Find a PT who works with runners. Mine also looks at my shoes and talks to me about those and my training plans to make sure I am doing what is best for me and my goals.

I want to share that I have a PhD in biomechanics and know a lot about bones so I work hard to find someone who will listen to what i know and work with me. Not that I am bragging about my degree, but I wanted you to know I have some knowledge about biomechanics and gait and the bones and muscles involved. I am my worst enemy though because I know all that can go wrong and try not to self diagnose. When I was training last fall I was so worried I had a stress fracture in my foot (turned out to be worn out shoes and all my pain in my foot and ankle went away when I got new ones same model). I was making the nurse laugh when she was taking my xrays because I knew what to look for and as each one popped up in the screen I would say "nope, nothing there."

Once again, so sorry for your experience!
