Philadelphia means only one thing...

Nope and neither is Rita's Water Ice or Wawas...I just found out about Rita's I really thought that it was.

Ritas is more nationwide.. they are all up and down the East Coast. My former S. NJ parents just found a few in Florida.

My local Dollar Tree stocks Tastykakes. They aren't expired but do expire within a week or so. They are excess from the grocery store routes around here. Picture it: beautiful boxes of TK for only one dollar!

I'd only read about Tastykakes from the Stephanie Plum novels. I tried some from the commissary one time but it was almost expired and not that great.

I hadn't thought about trying any more but now I must! I wonder if they are fresher being closer to where they are from? Have to start looking around for them.:3dglasses

Carol, what are these cookies you mention from Baltimore? I'm trying to find regional things to send for Christmas presents. This might be a good option. Heck, maybe everyone is getting fresh tastykakes for Christmas:rotfl:

For years I couldn't get them in New England (moved here 21 years ago), now they are easier to find. My fav is the butterscotch krimpet!

In June 2008 we were driving to Sesame and were in the Princeton area, it was about 101 degrees out. All of a sudden I yelled to DH... RITA'S!!!! I have never seen him turn the car around faster.... Yum!

Sunday night I went to my parents house and my Mom was making Philly Cheesesteaks for dinner. You should have seen us trying to find Cheese Whiz all over the grocery store. Finally found a small display below the potatoes in produce. :rotfl: In New England they call it a "Steak with Cheese". Seriously, I will call the local pizza place (DON'T get me started on pizza in New England-it is gross) and I will say "Cheesesteak" and they correct me, "You mean a steak with cheese". Could you imagine if I asked for a "Steak, Whiz, Without" For years my Dad would still try to order a "Italian Hoagie" in Massachusetts and the first thing they would ask is "mayo on it?" :scared1:

I don't like cheesesteak, although my husband loves it. What is a Philly pretzel? I might need one of those!

I've started several threads in the past about Tastykakes and the fact that I can no longer get them here on the west coast. Tastykakes are the most delicious cupcakes ever! Well, IMO anyway! Try some this summer, and if you don't like them, send me the leftovers.:)

Love the chocolate juniors and the ones with the buttercream frosting.:woohoo:

Philly Pretzels are large "soft" pretzels. Think of the frozen variety but fresh. In south Jersey we have stores called Philly pretzel factory that sell them hot out of the oven. They are delicious but they don't last long. You can't buy 20 and keep them for a few days.

Ah TastyKakes.

Used to be little bits of heaven. Now, not so much.

They have gone considerably downhill. I think they stopped using transfats. Good for health, bad for the yummy goodness that was TastyKakes.

Have him get you a pretzel so you won't be disappointed and remember the yumminess for what it used to be.

I saw TastyKakes at my Atlanta Publix the other day.

They're ok... but I have to admit, I didn't get they Philly hype when my husband brought them back. Personally, if I'm going to go crazy like that, I'll have a Little Debbie Swiss Cake Roll. lol

Too many truly good things to eat in Philly besides that. However, flying in and out of Philly isn't worth it, and frankly... they could stand to clean that city up. I was amazed how how unsafe I felt walking around (I've traveled to many places in America and Europe) and how dirty and smelly the streets are. What is up with that? Oh, and don't get me started on how it's the city of unbrotherly love.

My husband travels there a lot with his work, and they have great things to see, loads of history, great architecture, and really good food. It's unfortunate to me, as I'd love to tag along more.

Sadly, their swiss rolls are not that great. Little Debbie's are better, but the best are the originals: HoHo's.

Add me to the list of utterly shocked people. You can't get Tasty Kakes everywhere? That's unacceptable. I am obviously never moving out of the Philadelphia area. Life is not worth living without butterscotch krimpets.

The only place I've ever seen anyone talk about Tasty Kakes is on the DIS......we don't have them here. We have Hostess and Little Debbie, but nothing like Tasty Kakes. As for cheesesteaks, OMG, my faves!!! I love them!! We have a Cheesesteak Shop around the corner from home, they make them the "right" way and they are heaven on bread! LOL mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Are Tasty Kakes available everywhere in PA? DBF's sis lives there, I might have to try them when we visit next. :)

....TastyKakes are WA-A-A-A-AY better than Little Debbies....let the flaming BEGIN....

Agreed. But one time I was in PA and picked up Tastykakes Swiss Rolls. I ate half of one and threw the box out. (:scared1: That never happens with Tastykakes!!) Little Debbie's are better, or maybe they're just as bad, but I don't expect as much. In that one item only, give me a HoHo. Which is about the only good Hostess treat!

...when it comes to a round, swirly chocolate confection, NOTHING beats Yodels!

Huh, never heard of Yodel's either.....

And I won't flame, Little Debbie's are not that great at all. LOL

I didn't know that about "TK" either. I do remember that when my uncle's family moved from NJ to AZ they were jonesing for Drake's Devil Dogs. I THINK they can find them there now?

...wait a sec - you'd take DEVIL DOGS over YODELS???!?!? :scared1: :earseek:
...would you consider a RING-DING???

I agree with Kimmar. She's got great taste! :teeth:

Get with the program, people. NOBODY bakes a cake as tasty as a TastyKake. (Well, except for Drake's Yodels.)

I'm partial to Peanut KandyKakes and Butterscotch Krimpets, but I like Yodels a lot more than those. They're so much fun to eat. I have a whole system for devouring them--I eat the icing, then lick the cream out of the cake roll as I unravel it.

Little Debbie's I can pass up entirely although my son really likes her Cosmic Brownies.

....my ABSOLUTE faves are the Funny Bones...
