I ran 4 miles today. I really, really did not want to (and neither did my legs apparently) - but I forced myself to because 1) I know it is going to be really hard to find time to run when I am in San Diego for Thanksgiving (I'll be happy if I get 1 run in after the 5k) and 2) I was moving my info from my Polar tracker to marathonguide (where I keep my full running log) and I realized that my shoes that I thought had about 250 miles on them had about 320 (great job of estimating on my part) so I wanted to calibrate my foot pod for my new shoes and take those to San Diego.

How many miles do you all run on your shoes? I've heard around 300 is about right, but I've also heard anywhere from 300-600. I now have my new shoes and 3 other pairs of running shoes with between 320-375 miles on them and I still use all of them for shorter runs. How do you know when it is finally time to say goodbye?

Lou - I hope the race went well, I can't wait to hear the race report!

Jodi - How did the "punishment" miles go?

Dave - I hope everything works out with the grant.

Mike - Thanks for the info on the running store. That is not too far from where DH works so I'll tell him to keep it in mind.

Steve, Colleen, Chester, and Sara - Happy running/walking to all. I hope the weather is cooperating in your respective locations. Its actually great weather here today - it was 55 degrees when I left for my run.

Good afternoon McPhillyorkantonios.

Raced the local Turkey Trot 5K today; 29 degrees at start time.:cold: I am happy to say I fininshed in 24:22 (7:48 pace). I'm pretty psyched, seeing as I raced a 10K 3 months ago and averaged a 9:00 min/mi pace. I just decided to go for it today to see what I could do.

Honestly, where this motivation came from I do not know, but I then returned from the race and ran another easy 3.6 miles-because my training plan called for 60 minutes today. :)

Cindy: The typical thought on running shoes is they last approx. 350 miles (you'll read anywhere from 300-500 miles). Of course, a lot depends upon how you run, surfaces, body weight, etc. Shoes can look fine but it is the midsole that breaks down. I can only go about 250 miles in mine, as I wear away the soles on the lateral part of the heel; this means I gain a new pair of lawn-mowing shoes. ;)

I hope you all are having a great day.

P.S. For those who decide to run New York/Philly/San Antonio--will you still run Disney the following Jan (2009), or will you take a year off from WDW? Just curious :scratchin .

Hey Phila thread people,

Thanks for the positive thoughts and well wishes. I finished!!! I posted a race report in the Race Report thread.

Can't wait for next year!

Lou

Steve - Wow! Great job for your 5k. You sure picked up some speed!

Too early to tell about Disney in '09. I'd say probably yes.

Cindy - I don't do a very accurate job of keeping track of miles on my shoes. I'm guessing at around 300 miles per pair. The way it's worked out this year I just get a new pair about a month before each race (Jan, May, Oct, rinse, repeat) get a few short runs and one LR on them then use them for the race. I only rotate with the 2 newest pair.

Is your DH able to ambulate on his own yet?

Rest day for me today.

Hey all, qucik drive by, 5 miles of punishment today!! It was actually ok, though, as I was only going to do 4. I just took it real slow & it felt great, just under 9 mm.

Lou - Congrats on finishing!! I'll check out your race report in a moment! You sound pretty pumped!! WTG:thumbsup2

Cindy-WTG on your 4 torture!

Steve-Wow, nice pace, dude. I can just about drive that fast;) .

Lou: Congratulations!

Just read your report. Crappy weather, a pulled groin and you went 4:35 in your first marathon! Phenomenal! :thumbsup2

Really, that is a tremendous effort and accomplishment. And how great that you got to race by locations that really mean something to you as a "local guy."

Take your well earned rest and polish that medal a few times in the coming days.

Lou - :cheer2: Congrats to you on your marathon finish!! I loved the race report and so happy to hear all went well despite the less than favorable weather and the groin issue. You should be basking in the afterglow today for sure:woohoo: .

Jodi - Awesome job on your back-to-back runs:banana:. Definite kudos for getting back out there Sunday for a sweet run after Saturday was a bit hard for you. Are you resting todaypopcorn:: .

Mike - Nice job on the 16 miles despite the last 6 feeling like work:thumbsup2 . I hope you're feeling fine today after giving the legs a break yesterday.

Colleen - How are you feeling these days? Are you still going to yoga class? I like the 3 LW plan since it seems to be more consistent.

Dave - I'm down with Philly as well when costs are considered. I could realistically drive there since SW doesn't fly to PHL from ALB at this time. Did you manage to squeeze in a run this weekend? I hope you're doing well.

I am in a running funk or struggling with a mid-life crisis:laughing: . I just can't get my head in the game at this point and I've got a lot of junk going on that I have to deal with so my running has suffered a bit. Saturday's LR was a disaster and I don't know what to attribute it to so I am just putting it behind me. My leg is painful again:mad: . I ran a bit this morning and did yoga but I still have to put in some mileage tonight. So very glad it's a short work week so I'll have some extra time to relax and/or run.

Happy training to all this week:cheer2:

Mike
I went to a new running store in town that offered video gait analysis and they recommended a pair of Brooks Axioms. The shoes are really light, but they didn't work out for me. They would make my socks bunch up under the ball of my foot and irritated my shins. They didn't have as much cushioning as I liked. I hope they work out well for Kathy.

Jodi
Maybe I should start applying for NY now. Alaska will probably be in 2009. I'm thinking Mayor's Midnight Marathon. The really bad thing I've heard about it is the long stretch of gravel.

Cindy
When I get a new pair of shoes, I mark the date on the back of the heel with a permanent marker. I usually rotate my 2 newest pairs and estimate the mileage based on my Garmin Training Center log. Right now I'm rotating 3 pairs, so it will be a little harder to estimate. Once the shoes get to 300 miles, they area out of rotation.

Steve
I plan on doing Disney every year since it's semi-local for me. We live about 100 miles from WDW. Great job on the 5k. I'm looking forward to the next time I can run a 5k to see if I have made any improvement.

Sara
I hope the leg pain is short lived and quickly goes away. Sorry for the disasterous LR, But like you said, it's behind you now. Regroup and run for the fun of it.

Lou
Great job on your first marathon. I look forward to reading the race report after I finish posting here.

I had to break out the tights and a long sleeve shirt for my 8 miler Friday evening. Average pace was 10:26.

Sunday was back to warmer temps. I ran for 11 miles - out to the wilderness park and back. Average pace was 10:46.

No problems with the knee, but I am going to play it safe and quickly back-off if any pain reoccurs.

On schedule for this week:
Tuesday 5 miles
Wednesday 8 miles
Thursday 5 miles local Turkey Trot
Saturday 8 miles
Sunday 16 miles

Happy and safe traing to all,

Chester

Today's a rest day for me. Still at work, but taking a little break.

Is your DH able to ambulate on his own yet?

Yes, I forgot to mention. After various early and failed attempts at cross training, he gave up and decided to do nothing for a week. He ran for the first time post-MCM on Thursday and then did short runs again on Sat and Sun and seems to be fine. Of course, he has now decide that he should race (instead of just running) the 5k on Turkey Day. I, of course, think this is a bad idea. He has a pretty fast 5k PR (I don't have it memorized, but I know its under a 7 mm) and I don't really think he should be trying to run that fast quite yet :rolleyes1 Anyway, we are planning on going to Disneyland on Saturday (which I am really, really excited about - I've only been twice, DH has been many, many times, but we have never gone to any Disney park together yet) so as long as he can walk for that . . .

Steve, Mike, and Chester - thanks for the shoe advice. I'll probably try to squeeze a few more miles out of some of my older shoes, but probably need to part ways with them soon.

Steve - awesome job on the 5k!

Lou - Congrats on finishing your first marathon with an awesome time. Sorry to hear about the groin pull. :wizard: for it healing quickly.

Sara - I'm sorry to hear that you are having leg pain again. :wizard: Here's hoping it feels better soon.

Ok, back to work . . .

Hey gang,

Got 8 miles in walking yesterday, took me 2 hours! I felt good after, I think I am going to try and get 16 or 17 in Thursday morning. Guess who is not hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year!:thumbsup2 With no family here in NC, we usually get together with 2 other Canuck families for a big feast.

Today I went to yoga class and again received the scented oil temple massage, but today we also got a little neck rub too! I had a few errands to do, tutored at my kids school and then into the pool for a 45 minute swog.

Chester, what time of day do you usually get your runs in?

Sara, take care of that leg! Hang in there, I go through mid-life crisis every 6 months or so.:confused3

Jodi, did I miss it or how did your 37 go this weekend???

Lou, fabulous marathon performance.:thumbsup2 Do you have any pictures of the medal, how was the course? Did you ever feel crowded that you couldn't run the tempo you wanted?

Mike, congrats on your lovely 16 this weekend!:cloud9: It really has been perfect running weather here in NC the past month, I think about the awful, sweltering months I spent training for MCM this summer, argh! Now this is the time to be putting in those long runs.

I've got a lot of junk going on that I have to deal with so my running has suffered a bit.
Sara - I HATE "a lot of junk":headache: . I hope everything works itself out. We're here for you!

Colleen - Do all you immigrants do the traditional American thing? Nice that you get to share with friends since family isn't close.

I've really got to give you credit for sticking with the training. I'm not sure I'd have the motivation to keep at it with all the extra time you have to put in now by walking.

Cindy - Have a safe trip. Don't worry about DH running to fast. Remember, we men are invincible!

Chester - Kathy liked the Axioms just fine for her 3 miles Sunday. Glad the knee is doing well. What brand of tights do you have? I'm thinking of getting a pair.

Lou - How you feeling today? Try going down any stairs?

Dave and Jodi - MIA?

I did 5 miles this morning. My left achilles and calf really tightened up after about 2 miles. That's never happened before. Everything feels fine now though.

This week is going to be ridiculous, schedule wise. Middle of the afternoon activities are not good for night-shifters and we have something pretty much every day this week. I'm not really going to worry about getting any running in. That way anything I do is a bonus.

Lou - How you feeling today? Try going down any stairs?

I was sore yesterday but not as bad as I expected. Going down stairs was tough. Sleeping the last 2 nights has been tough as every time I roll over I wake up from some ache or pain. I will probably jump on the treadmill for a few miles today just to loosen some muscles up.

Lou - :wizard: for the soreness going away soon. A nice, slow, easy TM run may be just what you need to work the soreness out of those muscles:thumbsup2 .

Mike - Glad to hear you're resigned to consider whatever running you're able to get in this week as a bonus. Taking time to count our blessings and spend time with those dear to us will do much more for your spirit than a few miles will:) . Glad the achilles and calf seem to be okay now.

Colleen - Temple massage and neck rub:cloud9: Glad to see you're still hanging in there with the yoga. Good luck on your LR this week:woohoo: . I agree that you definitely deserve props for continuing on with the walking.

Cindy - Disneyland:banana: I hope you guys have an awesome time. It looks like DH was smart to take the time to heal up from MCM. I also date my shoes with a Sharpie and try to keep track of mileage that way. I rotate 5 pairs with one dedicated to LR's for whatever upcoming marathon I have on tap. I try not to let that pair have more than 100-150 miles on them when it comes marathon day.

Chester - So glad your knee is not misbehaving these days;) . Your training plan looks great for the week:cheer2: .

Jodi and Dave - How's your weather today?

I ran last night and this morning then tried to go to my Pilates class before work only to just make it around the block due to freezing rain:mad: . I settled for an hour of yoga at home. I may run a few more miles tonight depending on how I feel. I am up in the air as to which day to do my LR this week:confused: .

Happy Thanksgiving to all:grouphug:

Hey guys!!

Sara - PD:wizard: on the homefront, especially for the holiday! It's raining here as well today, don't worry, your yoga will keep you fromhurting someone!:rotfl:

Mike - OW:headache: , glad the calf & achilles calmed down; now see, if you'd've been chirunning this would never have happened:hippie: . You are going to buy the book for Kathy for xmas, right? Glad she's diggin' the new shoes. Yep, running's definitely an afterthought for the rest of the week.

Lou - Glad you're slowly recovering; you might wanna just walk, but if you do run, go short & easy, watch that groin doesn't get aggrevated again:scared1: . Oh, and make sure you wear your medal to Thanksgiving dinner!:thumbsup2

Colleen - Please PM a picture of your yoga instructors, ASAP! I may have to travel to NC for classes if this get any better:rotfl2: . Glad to see you're celebrating Thanksgiving w/ others of "your kind":rotfl: . WTG on that walk, interested to hear how Sat. goes. Any chance you can mix some running in, or is that a "no no"? Ditto on Mike's comment on sticking it out:hug: , you're my hero!

Cheslink - Glad the knee's good. Will you be devouring the turkey on Sat. in true neanderthal fashion? I can just see you getting an evening run in with a drumstick in your hand:rotfl: :lmao: !

Cindy - Have a safe trip!!! And have fun in DisneyLand!!:yay: :dance3: , that's too cool! I haven't been in about 15 yrs., guess a lots changed since then! Don't worry, let you DH run his little heart out, this way you can say "I told you so..." afterwards!!:rotfl: Yeh, good times...;)

Dave - Are you still working???:scared1:

So I ran 6 yesterday, easy again, like Sun. I figure I better start doing 5 days a week & suck it up. Today I'll CT @ the gym for a small amount of time, then run tomorrow am (speedwork/hills:scared1: ) b4 we head out. My brother rented 2 houses for our entire family on Martha's Vineyard for the holiday:scared1: :woohoo: . Wow, this should be interesting; I feel badly for Bruce & my 2 Dsteps:goodvibes , having to deal with my family:rolleyes1 . Hopefully we'll get to the ferry b4 too much traffic kicks in (I-95 on a holiday, you gotta love it). Oh yeh, did I mention we're bringing the dog, too?:rotfl2: . Ahhhh, nothing like having a few days off with no stress!popcorn:: . Anywho, I won't be able to check in until Fri. afternoon 'cause I don't think they have internet on the Vineyard.

Have an awesome holiday, everyone! Enjoy your families! Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!

Colleen
Weekday runs are in the evenings. I try not to leave after 10pm unless less than 5 miles is scheduled. Weekend runs depend upon the temperature and humidity. Hot and humid = running in the dark (either am or pm). Cool and dry = anytime I can fit it in.

Mike
Last year for Christmas, my MIL gave me a gift certificate to Race Ready, so I used it to purchase a pair of their tights. I might try to get a pair of the CWX Stabilizer tights and see haw they do. That or some gator skin tights from Running Funky.

Lou
If it is still painful going down stairs, turn around and go down backwards. Hope the pain and soreness are gone soon.

Sara
Take some time off and just enjoy Thanksgiving. My LR's are always on Sundays, and Monday is always a day off. The rest of my days I will juggle if necessary.

Jodi
I might try running while gnawing on a turkey let, it could give me something to feed to the panthers to keep them off my tail.

Cindy
Have fun at DL. I've only been there 3 times - once when I was 2, then with DW and the kids when my son won a Pop Warner scholarship in 2003, and DW and I went for the 2006 Half.

Dave
I hope all is well with you.

I'm going to be working at the 5 mile Turkey Trot on Thursday instead of running it. I get to call out time at the 2/3 mile mark.

Happy and safe Thanksgiving to all,

Chester
W.I.S.H. Half-Fast Missing Link Marathon Team

This will be short but sweet, I need to get DD off the swim team practice right away.

Thanks to you all for your kind words about me sticking with it. I am so bummed I missed MCM, I really want to see all WISHers at Disney. I have to say though, I don't think I could do it if I was working full time outside of the home. :confused3 My kids are so busy with activities after school and by the time I get home, prepare dinner, homework finished, baths and get the kids tucked into bed, I am ready for bed.

Chester, I wondered when you ran because I used to run late at night when the kids were preschoolers. I loved that time of day and could still sleep well at night. Also, I thought you had two daughters, I didn't realize you had a son too!

Jodi, Martha's Vineyard, there better be a detailed report on that trip when you get back.popcorn::

Sara, hope DD does well in her Turkey Trot!:cheer2:

Mike, careful with that left achilles and calf!:wizard:

I went to spin class this morning. I could feel the knee a little while cycling. I hope to get a little walk in this evening, rest day tomorrow and then 16 or 17 Thursday morning.

Greetings Everyone:

Sorry to go MIA after Saturday. I did no running this weekend. :sad2: none :sad2: To be honest, it actually felt pretty good to take the weekend off. I slept in, knew I wasn't training for anything, and just gave myself a break. It felt great. It was a relaxing weekend - oh, until DD9 princess: and DD6 pooh: put a baseball through the rear window of our minivan. Oh well, what can you do? It's always something, right?

I did run on Monday - did about 4 miles of my hill workout with 3x hill repeats. This morning I did 3 miles on the treadmill in 27 min. My legs have been feeling really good lately. I was just thinking, I haven't popped an ibuprofen for a long while.

So I'm down with Philly. I think it will be a lot closer and cheaper than San Antonio. I've always wanted to do a Rock n' Roll race, but there's always another time. I thought it might be fun since it was an inaugural race, but I'm totally fine running Philly.

Lou- You did a FANTASTIC job in the Philly Marathon. Congratulations! 4:35 for your first marathon. WTG! :thumbsup2 Now you have that 1st marathon under your belt, and you can sit back and relax for Disney. Have fun. Hope your groin is feeling better.

Chester- Good for you for volunteering at your local Turkey Trot. I always have a good time when I volunteer, and it feels good to give back to the running community a little. Have fun.

Hi Jodi :wave2: - I am still working, and have actually been pretty busy lately (which is good). Good job on getting your runs in. Have fun at Martha's Vineyard. Sounds great. Good luck on building up to 5 runs/week. I didn't make it last week since I blew off the weekend.

Sara- To be honest, I haven't been outside or near a window much today. :confused3 Can't tell you how our weather is. It seems like it's warming up again. Wow, you had freezing rain? We definitely missed that. Sorry to hear you've been dealing with a lot of junk lately. I hear you with that. I think I'm having a mid-life crisis too right now. Hey, we can go through it together, right? Hang in there, and please let us know if there's anything we can do for you.

Cindy- Have a GREAT time at Disneyland. I bet it will be great with the holiday decorations up. Have fun!!!

Hi Colleen :wave2: - We really need to contact Steve and Krista to see if they want to run Philly with us. Great job on your 8 mile walk. You are an inspiration to all of us for not throwing in the towel. WTG!!! Your yoga class sounds like heaven.

Mike- Good for you for keeping up your running with your night shift. Good luck getting some bonus runs in this week.

OK, I'm still working tomorrow, but if I don't hear from anyone have a great Thanksgiving.

Forgot to mention, my marathon program arrived yesterday, I am 50** something, can't remember, but I am in corral B again this year.

Grrrrrr

It's 9:30, still trying to finish some stuff up at work
But then 5 whole days off
Flight leaves tomorrow at 8:30 AM - still need to pack :scared1:
Just wanted to pop in to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving!

Cindy - Have a safe trip! Enjoy DL (I've never been).

Dave - Baseball through the van window, huh? Those windows are tough to break with a ball. Someone's either got a good arm or can really hit. Sign them up! Great job on the hill repeats and I'm glad the legs are feeling good. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Colleen - 16 or 17 Thursday morning? Between that and the turkey tryptophan overload you might sleep all Friday!

Chester - Gator skin tights!? Now that would complete the look! Have fun calling out times Thursday. You should throw out a few crazy numbers every once in a while to see who's really paying attention.

glad the calf & achilles calmed down; now see, if you'd've been chirunning this would never have happened:hippie:.
Jodi - What makes you so sure that I don't have the natural Chi going on? I think I'm flowing with it.

Have fun at Martha's Vineyard. :wizard: PD to Bruce and the steps.

Taking time to count our blessings and spend time with those dear to us will do much more for your spirit than a few miles will:)
What. Are you writing for Hallmark now? I'm going to find you around mile 18 and repeat that line to you (then I'm going to run like hell:laughing: ). You are right though. My family means everything to me and they liked me just fine even before I could run to the end of the block without heaving up my liver.

Lou - Glad your recovery is moving along well. Slow and easy is the key for your runs for a little while. That and an extra slice of pumpkin pie!

Take care everyone. Safe travels to those of you hitting the road.
