We always take our pets with us. All we have to do is say "We're going to Disney World" and they get all excited. The crazy thing is that our 10 year old cocker is a barker, but as soon as we put him in the motorhome he stops barking at everything. We we get packed up to leave Disney, he gets upset and starts barking. Obviously, dogs are smarter than we give them credit for.
Also, we have never had a problem with stepping in dog pooh. The dog owners are much more responsible at The Fort than elsewhere.

I don't get it. I can't smoke on the property because that would be stinky and offensive to people. But the animals can come and shed all over everything and it's OK.

According to a reliable Disney source, WDW currently has on property...

34 Resorts = 28,000+ rooms + 3,187 DVC

Total NONdog WDW accommodations = 31,187+

Total Campsites (note: not all pet sites) = 799

Even assuming that pets were allowed on 600 sites...

Less than 0.02% of all WDW accommodations allow dogs

That's good news for some disgruntled folks as it means that
99.98% of all WDW "rooms" are DOG FREE!!

According to the US Census site there are currently 310,547,147 people in the U.S.

According to a survey by the HSUS (Humane Society of the US) as of 12/09, in the US there were...

77.5 million dogs
39% of US households contained at least one dog (and that number increases every year)

So 39% of the population shares their home with a dog
and yet
TWO ONE HUNDRETHS OF ONE PERCENT
of all WDW accommodations allow dogs.


I would love to stay at the Grand Floridian, but my dog is not allowed to stay there with me so I choose not to. That leaves me with some percentage of the 799 campsites at ONE resort to choose from depending on my camping equipment and preference.

Lucky for me, that one resort is actually one of my very favorites!

Someone who wishes to "not vacation near other people's pets" ...or step in dog pooh (???) has their choice of more than 31,187 accommodations on WDW property

Maybe Disney could set a curfew for all children on property. Everyone under the age of 16 must be inside thier own room/camper after 1900.

That little rule would have come in handy the night the pack of screaming children was racing between campsites 'til past midnight a few weeks ago.

To the OP - if you don't want to have to worry about stepping in dog poo, just stay off the DOG walks and out of the DOG park.

Would you go on vacation and leave your children in a kennel??? Our dog is a family member.

The thought has occurred to me more than once. It would be quieter, not to mention cheaper.

As to the dogs, we have two but we are able to distinguish between human and canine when counting family members. If I can't take a tax deduction on 'em, they aren't going to Disney for vacation. The way I see it, Disney is for the kids. If you can't listen to them then you're in the wrong place. The dogs don't fall into the same family. I don't think that dogs are in Disney's customer demographic.

The way I see it, Disney is for the kids. If you can't listen to them then you're in the wrong place.

Well gosh, then I guess DH and I (40 something - NO kids) should just stop spending 3 weeks there every year.

A shame... what will we do with all that extra free time???

Hmm... Disney might disagree given that 10 years ago you couldn't bring dogs to the Fort and now the majority of the resort is not only pet friendly, but they built a DOG PARK 3 years ago.

Disney markets to pet owners and pets alike. They have a line of pet products for your furry family members. They just recently offered, as a perk to CMs, a free photo session for your pet with Santa, the Fort is more than accomodating for dogs, and now the recent news of most resorts being pet friendly. Id say dogs are in thier demographic.

Disney, unlike some, realizes that pets are a part of the family and not just a burden. They understand that people would like to take thier pets on vacation with them and make the experience enjoyable for all.

I realize you are just here to stir things up and get a rise out of everyone. Thats fine, we can take it. Weve beat trolls before and you wont be the best weve faced. Im sure there will be more behind you.

Who Cares: Disney can and may will charge up to $25 a night for a pet to stay in their hotels. All they have to do is supply poop bags and vacuum the rooms for shedding. If you smoke in a room you make it so people that don’t smoke can’t use that room with no extra charge. I’m all for giving smokers their own rooms and building for up to $25 a night extra so they can smoke.

Unless you happen to be standing right outside my TT door when I'm throwing out the most recent pile of hair I've swept up... I don't think you need to worry about any animals coming over to your site or cabin and purposefully shedding on you or your stuff. (sheesh)

After all, it would be bad business to only market to 60% (or less) of the US population (given the other 39%+ are pet owners)

And let's not forget that until just recently, Disney was operating kennels at all 4 theme parks as well as the Fort, and now in conjunction with Best Friends, have built a Luxury Pet Resort 2 minutes from the Fort.

They didn't do that for giggles... they did it because they recognize that a decent percentage of their market IS people who don't necessarily want to leave their pets at home when they go on vacation.

And no one's saying there's some weirdness where the only people that bring their pets to WDW are the ones that consider them "kids" on par with human family members. We're not all demented - we get that kids are kids and dogs are dogs.

While it's true that many of us consider our pets beloved companions and truly enjoy traveling with them, lots of people do so for strictly practical reasons...

- not all of us have access to good kennels or a pet sitter back home

- what if something happens to your pet while you're 1000 miles away?

and how about just that....
- it's EXPENSIVE to board a dog or 1, 2, 3 weeks!

It would cost us far more to board our 3 dogs for the 3 weeks we spend at Disney than it would for our site and park tickets combined!

But we also happen to fall into that group of people that actually got into camping because of our pets. Because we really, truly enjoy spending time with them - at home AND on vacation.

But geez... why am I even bothering to explain since I've been informed that Disney is "for the kids" so DH and I should even be going period.

I guess it would be silly for me to post the photo of DH and I on Dumbo last month......

Hmm... I wonder how Disney thinks those kids are getting themselves to WDW... or paying for that $8 burger... or getting themselves back to their Concierge-level rooms after 3am EMH at MK???

Surely they should shut the place right down in November then - when the majority of people I saw on the bus to/from the Fort did NOT have kids with them.

And clearly Disney has gone right off the rails with $45+ entrees at their many "signature dining" restaurants, and building a tequila bar at Epcot!!

On topic: We have a diabetic black lab. She has needed insulin injections twice a day for 6 or 7 years now. No kennel will do that. The vet will take her but charges for medical care on top of board.

She is half the reason we have the RV

That's two people in two days I wouldn't want to have to spend time with. One would be telling me how smart and always right they are. The other would be having heart palpitations because of a few dog and cat hairs that might be on my clothes.
