Pet Names

My cat died last night....Her name was Lucy. We now have a Ricky without a Lucy and we are devastated. She was old and gave us over 15 years of Lucy memories. We were laughing that we didn't go with "roller poster" which is what my two year old wanted to name her 15 years ago. We loved our Lucy.
I’m so sorry for your loss. We lost our chihuahua, Gigi, yesterday after 14 years with our family. We are devastated. I am sure her and Lucy met at the rainbow bridge. Hugs to you and your family.

We have a mix of names here currently,

Dogs: Sonny, Princess and Buster
Rabbit: Lola
Hamster: Chip
Turtle: Philly

We had 2 chihuahuas named Gigi and Chico, and 2 cats named Isabel and Zoe. All have passed. We miss them everyday.

When the kids were little all dogs were named either Fluffy or Bear. Had one cat named Cricket
A few months ago my oldest grandson brought home a bull mastiff whose “official” name was Lady Bird but I started calling her Shirley. Grand son was mad but got over it & brought home a smaller dog who was going to have to go to the pound. His name was James but grandson renamed him Scooby. I started calling him Homer but now call him names I can’t say on here……

Mostly human names for dogs but not for cats.

DH wants to name our next dog Phil, because he thinks it would be funny to have a dog with such a "normal" sounding name. He wanted to name our newest dog "Lord Stanley" (after the Stanley Cup), but I nixed it. We compromised on a semi-hockey related name. (Our dog has the same name as our team's long-time anthem singer.

Would you mind sharing the semi-hockey related name? Thanks.

Cat- Peco, named after the Philadelphia Flyers Power Play
Dog- Natalie, named after a beer. May she RIP
Dog- Mr Monkey, not sure how that happened lol
When I was a kid, we had a beatup looking raggedy cat named Mr. I.M. Ugly. The Vet called him Mr Ugly. Please direct all cries of pet shaming outrage to my Father, Mr Grum P. Oldman :teeth:

My Yorkie - Sophie (I named her - I wanted something feminine since she was so little and small)

My Guinea Pig - Zoe (DD12(at the time in 2016) named her)

My past Black Lab - Indy (DH named him and he loves Indy car racing and especially the Indy 500)

My past German Shepherd - Sampson (I named him - I wanted a very strong name)

I tend to go with theme names that sometimes are human names.

Cats: Gwynhavar or Guinevere, I was into Arthurian Legends so I also had a Hamster named Lancelot
Cats: Romeo and Juliet, my Shakespeare phase
Figaro (we called him Figgy),
Shamu the Killer Cat,
Cuddles, he really was a cuddly cat and so complacent
Phantom because she looked like Philadelphia Flyers farm team logo
Lucky, we rescued her from a certain death as she was a feral cat where my husband worked and he fell in love with her. His boss planned to poison the feral colony so we had to save her. Lucky because she was lucky to be alive
Nala and Simba
Barbossa, Cap'n Jack no need to explain these 2 and the names fit their personalities
Yoda my Star Wars theme
and Adso after the cat in Outlander

Dogs: O'l Bullitt (after a comic strip my dad liked),
Hobo because he looked like one,
Mischa (he was a Siberian Husky),
Snowflake (We called her Flaky and she was a crazy puppy);
Lad and Lady our mother and son Brittneys (they had more formal names though),
Nikki (I wanted a small dog with that name She was a boxer/shepherd mix and over 60 lbs. I called her Snikkerdoodles)
Takoda or Cody. It was my Native American phase and meant little bear - it really fit her
Chewbacca - To continue the Star Wars theme

I have had miscellaneous small pets to
Rabbits - Peter and Thumper
Hamsters - Lucky (he was an escape artist and we had cats so he was Lucky. For some reason we always found him in the bathtub)
Devon - named after an actor my daughter had a crush on

Guinea Pig - Gweeky don't ask I think it was for the squeaky noise he made

Birds: Pongo and Perdie. I woke up one day to find out I had given the consent for my kids to have birds
Spongebob - my daughters choice
Dingo - I had a parakeet that liked to play dead. He would fall off his perch and when I would go to check on him he would jump up and fly at me.

Snake - Herman, he was my brothers and I HATED him

I guess after writing them all down there we had a mix of human names but mostly theme names.

Our pets have human names, &, for whatever reason, we tend to give them longer names & call them by their shortened names.

CATS -

Allison, & we called her Allie (NOT Alley - when we named her, I wasn’t even thinking of “Alley Cat”!).

Lillian, & we called her Lillie

Alexia, & we call her Lexi

DOGS -

Sadie - she was a rescue, & we kept her name

Maksim, & we call him Maks.

FISH -

Larry

Human names here.

And although it's never planned from the start, our cats have always ended up with middle names as well.

We also have one cat with a different last name from ours. I don't remember how we came up with that one. And we only share this information with select friends and family. The vet's office thinks her last name is the same as mine. :ssst:

Ha! Love it! We also have a cat with a different last name! Her name is Penny Cabbit. She is named Penny because she has a copper color on her face. Her last name is because she is as soft as a rabbit. So, we added the c (for cat) and she was named!

The cat we had when I was growing up was named Gwendolyn Callahan. She lived under the nursing home across the way and my mom would feed her a dish of milk; mom wanted a cat, but dad had said "no pets." He knew she was doing it, though, and one night as he tripped over the dish he swore and said something to the effect of "If you're gonna feed that damned Gwendolyn, at least do it in the house where I won't fall over the dish!" The Callahan part came from when my mom learned that Old Tom, one of the residents at the nursing home, had called her Callahan. SO, Gwendolyn Callahan. She had 4 kittens and we kept one, named Mimpy. She was supposed to be "Dimples" as she had a black spot where a beauty mark or dimple might be, but my 3 year old sister could only say "Mimples," and therefore Mimpy was her name. We only had Gwendolyn for about 3 years but we had Mimpy until I was about 20.

We got 2 kittens when DD was 7, at the very beginning of the Harry Potter craze. The black/white/grey cat with the lines on his head was Potter, and his brother, an orange tiger, was Weasley. DD named them. We had Potter for 17 years and Weasley for 20 years. Still miss our boys.

We currently are pet-sitting for DD's hamster as there is no space for her in the new apartment DD shares with her fiancee and his 4 year old son. She named her Mia Hamm-ster!

All of our dogs have been rescues and we have kept their original names, except for one. Their names:
Midnight
Buster
Daisy
Emma
Beauty, this one we changed to Belle. We called her Beautybelle for awhile then shortened it to Belle.
Now we have Gus
