Pet Names

We name our dogs after places:
Rocky - (for the mountains we live near)
Chili - (for Chilton, a town)
cats have typical 'cat' names:
Rascal
Rum-tum-tugger (from the musical Cats) we just call him Tug

Our last cat was Mocha, but generally she was called "Fuzz" or "Fuzz Butt" by our kids.
Some reason all our cats have had names starting with "M". Previous cats were Murdock (as in Howling Mad Murdock from the A Team), Missy, Muffin (inherited from the MIL) and Montana (known just as Tana)

All of our animals but one have human names.

Four rescue dogs: Howie (Lhasa Apso), Penny (long haired chihuahua), Olive (shih tzu), and Wilson (mixed breed that is white with blue/gray patches, blue eyes and long body with stubby corgi legs and thick long terrier hair.)

My oldest DS has two bearded dragons, Chad and Bernard.

And my youngest has a white parakeet named Soap, b/c he looks like a bar of Ivory Soap :rotfl:

Growing up my pets were a mix of human and "animal" names. My first cat was named Catty so I've expanded beyond that, haha.

Mostly human names for dogs but not for cats.

DH wants to name our next dog Phil, because he thinks it would be funny to have a dog with such a "normal" sounding name. He wanted to name our newest dog "Lord Stanley" (after the Stanley Cup), but I nixed it. We compromised on a semi-hockey related name. (Our dog has the same name as our team's long-time anthem singer.

My 2 dogs have been Charlie and Lexi, while those are names that humans have, I consider those to be pet names. Human names for pets for me are ones that are a whole lot less common.

My cat is Meeko.

We’ve never gotten to name a pet as they’ve always come to us already named and we didn’t change the names. That said, we’ve had a mix of pet and human names: Queenie, Patchie, Boo Bear, Phoebe, and Oliver. I think if I were to pick, I’d go with the more pet vs human names but I may never get the chance
I’m the opposite, i on,y got to name one pet, a dog, Bob. I much prefer human names.

I had a chihuahua/terrier mix named Freckles for 17 years. He had little light brown spots all over his legs so the name fit. He was always under my arm like a purse being carried around. When people saw me and I didn't have him they'd ask me if he was all right because it was so unusual. He passed in 2003 and I keep the little wooden box with his ashes here on my desk.

My pets have had mostly human names, but some not.

Cats: Peter and Ponyo (both Japanese Bobtails (JBT), Peter kept his litter name based on super heroes, Ponyo is named after the animated film)
Dog: Finnick (from Hunger Games fame)

Previous cats: Nikkei (JBT, named after the Japanese stock market), Kaede (JBT, Japanese girl's name, means Maple, cat was born in Canada on Canada Day), Comet (was originally named "snowball", but she really looked like a dirty snowball), and Shiva (the Destroyer of Twinkies, DSH, long story on her name)

Previous dogs: Darci (black standard poodle, born on the day of the Chicago St. Patrick's Day parade ... a combination of a French (D'Arcy) and Irish (Darcy) names), Akiko (Japanese Akita born on the autumnal equinox, common Japanese girl's name means "fall child").

The vet could NEVER pronounce Kaede's (Ki-Eh-Day, long vowel "i") name!

And although it's never planned from the start, our cats have always ended up with middle names as well.

We also have one cat with a different last name from ours. I don't remember how we came up with that one. And we only share this information with select friends and family. The vet's office thinks her last name is the same as mine. :ssst:

That's funny. Ours don't have middle names, but one does have a "full name". We named her Jessie after Cowgirl Jessie from Toy Story, but when she acts rotten, we call her "Jessica".

The last name thing made me laugh too. My sister has a cat named Fitzwilliam. About 3 years ago, she got married and her new last name is Williams. She made sure to tell me that Fitzwilliam was going to keep her maiden name as his last name because Fitzwilliam Williams sounded ridiculous.

My cat inside is named Meesha. The outdoor barn cats are Mama Cat, Polly and Oscar.

Other cars I’ve had over the years have been Ashes, Louise, Mystic, Muffin, Domino and those were all indoor cats. I can’t even remember all the names for the barn cats,

Our dogs were Blossom, Spice, Chance, Prince, Puddles, and Shiloh.

We had a "Mama Cat" too! Many years ago.

For the animals in your house or yard.

Do they have typical “pet” names or “human” ones.

I’ve always chosen human names for my pets.

Same here - originally so I could ask DH how the kitten was doing from work without sounding like I was going on and on about a pet. :rotfl:

Same here! Our two got their middle names because "Nana" kept wanting to call one by a different name, so we just made it her middle name. (Of course that meant the other cat needed a middle name too. :rotfl2:)

My cat died last night....Her name was Lucy. We now have a Ricky without a Lucy and we are devastated. She was old and gave us over 15 years of Lucy memories. We were laughing that we didn't go with "roller poster" which is what my two year old wanted to name her 15 years ago. We loved our Lucy.

I'm so sorry.

We had an outside barn cat for several years that DH just called "Cat" before DD and I came along. DD would not accept that and named her Crystal because her eyes looked like Crystals (I don't think she knew that was a human name).
Then we got our rescue dog, Shadow. He's a black lab mix. He had a different name when we adopted him but as soon as we looked at him we knew he was a Shadow.
Our next dog we got right after my first solo WDW trip so I found it appropriate to call her Minnie. She was also a miniature version of Shadow when we got her (all black), so we were going to spell it Mini but she turned reddish brown after her first haircut so she no longer looked like Shadow.
Our barn cat died and DD was crushed so we decided to find a new kitty. We went to a couple rescue places in pet stores, but the days we went there they weren't adopting the pets out. She really wanted a black cat and when one popped up on a local animal control FB page I went the next morning to get her. DD really wanted to name her Binx, but she already had a name that I just couldn't change - Maleficent.
Then DD's father decided they couldn't keep their black cat, Julia, and took her to animal control without telling DD. Well the first time DD went over there after that she noticed Julia was gone and she was so sad. So we decided to rescue her. Luckily she was still there and recognized DD right away. I asked if we could change her name to Binx and she said no way lol. She's not the friendliest cat, so I call her Lucifer, Lucy for short. So a few human names for her.

First pets had intensely unimaginative names: “Bluey“ and “Greenie“ for several parakeets; “Goldie“ for the fish that invariably died in their too small glass bowls.

In my early teen years it was too much “Lord of the Rings“ for me and I named my cat after Gandalf’s horse and an anagram.

My oldest family pet was an Amazon parrot named “Soul” which fit the times, his coloring, and place in our hearts.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is. We DID let our then-3-year-old name one of our cats so now we have a Rock Band. We let him name the kitten as consolation for not being able to name his little brother what he wanted: T-rex Coffee.

In addition to Rock Band, our other current cats are Figaro, Kibibi, and Zsa Zsa. Previous cats have been Delaney, Adelle, Gremlin, Dinah, and Mercutio. The last one was originally going to be Sir Tomato Thomas Yodel Homeslice Smith III, but I shortened it to Mercutio. We mostly called him Mouser.

Previous dogs have been Lola, Topenga, and Boss. My beloved iguana was Ignatius, the hedgehog was Zenith, and I can’t begin to get into the names of all the other lizards, pocket pets, fish, etc. because we’d be here all day.

The turtle, who has reverted to a semi-wild existence in our backyard over the past year, is Pearl. Her truly wild counterparts out there with her have been dubbed Eloise, Rose, and Frank Lapidus, all LOST references.
