For those of you who have pets and keep their food outside ( in garage, shed, etc.). What type of rodent proof container or cabinet do you keep them in?

I recycled popcorn tins we got for Christmas

We keep ours in a tin we received free from purchasing cat food at a specialized pet store, like a popcorn tin. We've never had any problems with bugs, etc.

I have a small dog, so I keep mine inside in the utility room. My uncle has a large dog and keeps his outside in a galvinized new trash can. He's had a lot of luck with it--no "unwanted" friends!

I bought a small steel trash can at Sears. I think it's 11 gallons. It has a handle that can swing up to lock the lid.

My BFF uses a garbage can for her horse food, keeps the bugs/rodents out. For us, we keep our dog & cat food in large plastic bins that are made for that. We got them at Petco, they have locking lids so no bugs/rodents can get inside. :)

Not for pet food, but for compost, my DH recycled an old 5 gallon bucket of joint compound. We have it sitting outside our sliding doors on the deck. Well just before Christmas my daughter says to me one day "mom look at that squirrel". Well the squirrel was chewing away on this (very thick) plastic lid. The next day he came back and managed to finally chew a large hole in the lid so he could fit down inside the bucket and get food out of it. So, I probably wouldn't use anything plastic :scared1: I didn't really care because it's just compost and my kids loved watching the squirrel up close.

We use an indoor-sized garbage can that has a clicking-top lock. We keep it in the garage, live next to a large field and have never had issues.

I agree with not using plastic. It is amazing what the squirrels chew through here. Even the heavy duty thick plastic shelves on our grill they were able to chew deep gouges into. DD's toys and Little Tykes play equipment have also felt the wrath of our mutant squirrels and those don't even have any food affiliation:confused3.

We have two dogs and 2 cats and keep the food in our attached garage. The animals go in there so they might keep the critters away as we dont have any. We use a rubbermaid garbage can for the dog food with locking lid and a 5 gallon bucket with lid for the cat food....It has been this way for a few years and so far so good :)

For my indoor cats I put the bag inside a popcorn tin and the bag is closed with a chip clip.

I never thought I'd have to worry about putting their food away until the day I went to feed them and while pouring the food into their dish a mouse came out with it :scared1:

DH thought it was funny and said it was like a prize in the cereal box, not so funny to me though :sad2:

I keep my birdseed outside, and I now use a galvanized trash can. The squirrels chewed through the green rubbermaid container I had been using. The can is on the smaller side and has a handle that can swing up vertically and it locks the lid in place so the squirrels (or other critters) can pop the lid off. I've never had a problem, and it's been outside for at least 5 years. Oh, I bought it at Agway, but they've since gone out of business (at least in NJ).

OP here, thank you for all the replies. I already have a galvanized garbage can with food in it. Several years ago I had a thick Rubbermaid garbage can that I used and ended up with rats in my garage. That's when I bought my first garbage can. (Looks like my first idea is a keeper.) I went out today and bought another for treats and other things for our pet.

You may want to look for a can with wheels or casters on them. If you buy a lot of food at a time it can save your back to wheel the can over to the car and load it rather than lugging the bag or bags to where the garbage can is.

We keep our cat food in the garage in a milk can. It has a rubber gasket on the lid so that it is air tight and nothing can chew through the metal. It can hold about 30 pounds of food.

We keep our dog food in the pantry in two containers on wheels that each holds 25 pounds of food. This is plastic and also has rubber gaskets around each lid.

We keep treats in a popcorn tin.

Out at our cabin we use an old-time milk can for bird food. I'd think it would work just as well for pet food, if you can find one (farm auctions often have them around here, anyway). And they are pretty cute and decorative (if they're not rusty!)
