Ms Scotland 2010? I like it :thumbsup2

Wow wow wow I love that colourful chandiler!(sp)

I wannnnttttt it!!!

What a lovely little place.
Sarah

Coming out of lurkdom to tell you that I LOVE your trip report! This past summer we took a road trip and hit all the places we saw of Food Network and Travel Channel....Lynn's was one of them. SO GOOD!

How I got over 10 pages behind I have no idea?!

Chapter 2:
Awesome name for a gentlemen's club :lmao:

Sorry about the popcorn

Sounds like a fun 17th bday shopping trip!

Response to quote:
That definitely wasn't right for the teacher to give everyone in her group the same grade! I agree that it should be based on the amount of work you do!

Chapter 3:

You write wonderfully! I love the description of the one tooth Cletus!

The paradise cafe looks awesome! i love all of the bright colors!

We don't have those crackers here =(

What can I use as an alternative?

Sarah

I actually googled this to see if graham crackers are called something else in Britain (my mother is Welsh so I grew up with two names for some foods!); but I dont think they have graham crackers - the closest similarity is that graham crackers are like digestive biscuits but sweeter and that Britains use digestive biscuits crushed up for pie crusts - maybe that would work?

Awww, that's so sweet, you think my family is normal! The Bus is really just a rough translation of its actual Chinese name. It's named after my Uncle. Yeah....it's a lot funnier in Chinese....haha:rolleyes:
I would love to learn Chinese but I think I would have no patience. I have ADD I swear so by the 3rd round of a pronunciation, I would be counting dots on the ceiling. I learned Spanish well, but that was when I was young. Now, I think my attention span is worse.

Except here! :lmao:

And how did we start talking about our usernames? Or nicknames? Did it start with the "liking names with 'Y's in it thing?"
I think so...see...distract me and I am stewed!

WTH! I didn't even know you started a new TR. I love your TR's. Read them all. Was i only a lurker? :confused3 Let's start over.

Hi - My name is Dawn and I am a cross between a Leo and a Virgo.

My mom was in labor with me for 3 days so I was supposed to be a 100% Leo but the Gods and her coochie decided they wanted me born on the Cusp. Depends on what astrological chart you read or follow.

Which I do not - just read when they are around and always find it amazing I am a Leo one day and a Virgo another.

How are you this morning? popcorn:: :rotfl2:

My sister lives in London and when she comes home to visit we send her back with peanut butter, licorice and pancake mix. We mail Twinkies and other fattening Hostess products!!:rolleyes1

No PANCAKE MIX or PEANUT BUTTER??? :scared1: How do they live???
Duh! Skinnier than us! They have Peanut Butter in Ireland but not like ours.

Healthier.

BTW - did you change your avatar pic?

My little sister has always hated mayo (freak), so when we had BLT night, she had PB&B instead.Totally how my fetish started as a kid! But smooth instead of crunchy (again, freak). I like a little crunch in mine!

Coming out of lurkdom to let you know how much i love your trip reports...always so entertaining. And that PB&B sounds interesting...i LOVE peanut butter and i LOVE bacon but never thought to mix the two, i'll have to try it.You better let us know how you like it!!!

I just noticed, peanut butter with BACON??????? Who ever thought of such a thing?
Me! That's who! So why dontcha come down here and let me wring your skinny little stitch head off! Ya saying I am weird or something?!:rotfl:
I don't even know what to say after reading any part of your reports. :rotfl2: So I'll just suffice with "OH MY WORD!":lmao:
Hope that is a good "OH MY" not an, "OH MY" like you need to go to the confessional! BTW _ what does MH stand for? I always think math but now it's bugging me!
I'm beginning to think that keeping caught up over here is gonna take a LOT of time!
You can always just read the chapters...maybe I should link the recipe part on the first pages as well. loook at the bright side - I am so wooorth it! :lmao:
Great update! I love trying to go to places I saw on the Food Network. Made the few stops we had fun!!

On another note, we were doing yard work tonight and ended up having a late dinner, so I made your chicken salad (the one with grapes) and we put it on sub rolls and had some chips and fruit with it. SOOOO YUMMY!! It would have been better cold, but we didn't have time to chill it first.
Glad you liked it!!!

I'm glad you didn't take Mr. Toothless along with you.....
We thought he might make a cute mascot!!!:rolleyes1
I wish they would've...it would've made for a great TR!!
Next TR: Kidnapping a stranger to WDW!!!!
woooow, that place sounds awesome! And your plan of stopping to eat at unique places is a GREAt idea for road trips! I need to keep that in mind the next time I take one!:thumbsup2
Do it! More to plan and planning is fun. or OCD!!!!

I love me some Guy Fieri! We keep threatening to try some of the Triple D's here in Texas. There were a few in Austin.
We did get to one of his places!!!

That restaurant looks amazing! I can't wait to hear about the food.
Me too.

What did ya have for dinner last night? :cool2:

And sleeping in the booger in a parking lot, that is hard core Dawn. Rock on!
A Volkswagen would be hard core. This is more soft core.

That sounded so wrong even I cannot comment! :rotfl2:

And I may have ummm, attended... that bar... once... back in my younger days... :rolleyes1 But this is a family show!! So on with the story! :wizard:
Really Pollyanna Perfect...do tell....:surfweb:
The decor look like just the thing to wake you up!!
Totally was!
great trip report!!!!!! your an amazing writer!
Thank you for your kind words. Hope you stick around!
I have lived only an hour away from Louisville my entire life and have never heard of that place!! It looks so cool, I may have to try it soon.
Great road trip for breakfast!!!
Great update. You are too funny. You write so well I can actually visualize everything! I am glad and that the same time you should not give me that kind of power. I could tell you about Speedo men that would make you poke your corneas out! Love the part where you and Carsyn are laughing trying to find the bathroom. Those are the moments that make a trip so memorable!
I could not agree more!!
oh man I really thought that you saw hillary! You fooled me. There is a photo credit on the bottom of the pic. I just went scouring for a few pics of the place since some of mine did not turn out great and voila...there she was!

I laugh so much as I am reading that everyone at work asks what is so funny-so, when I am trying to tell them and laughing as I do, I don't think they get it. Welcome to my life except what is so funny is usually in my head and I can't get it out as fast as it comes in!
So you did not really see Hillary?
No grasshoppah - thanks for playing along though!
your updates always make we laugh. have you ever posted a picture of your green booger? what kind of van is it?
No, I have not come upon one yet...need to for sure!
Ms Scotland 2010? I like it :thumbsup2
I will send you a crown my dear!
Sarah

Coming out of lurkdom to tell you that I LOVE your trip report! This past summer we took a road trip and hit all the places we saw of Food Network and Travel Channel....Lynn's was one of them. SO GOOD!
I will give my review in a few...but I saw your blog and want to tell you I am blessed you have time to visit me here! :lovestruc

Chapter 3:

You write wonderfully! I love the description of the one tooth Cletus!

The paradise cafe looks awesome! i love all of the bright colors!

I like your detailed review! Concise and to the point! You should be a movie critic...or you could write cliff notes for this one!!! :teacher:

Now we need to get her some! I am on a mission!!! I feel bad. It's like teasing a starving dog!!!

LOVE the new update. I'll actually be going to Indianapolis next month, so I might have to convince my parents to make a detour. We'll be driving, but there's only three of us plus 18 bags of our (read-Mom's) running stuff, so we'll probably end up taking the Vitara. Which makes me sad, because I like the Sienna much better...but gas mileage and all that.

So, I know this is a theme with me, but your story reminded me of my story. If you ever get annoyed, feel free to just tell me to shut up...most people do :) This summer, DBF drove me and his sister Megan, who's four years younger than us. We were going to the the Dublin Peanut Festival Pageant. I kid you not, these people seriously were competing for the title of Miss Peanut Festival. They were hawking the decorations during the pageant. Anyway, we stopped to get gas before we left, because it was a 3 hour drive back to Tay's house. He told Megan and me to stay in the car while he went inside and paid. Now he told us this later, but it fits here. Upon walking in, the first thing he notices is a man buying a bag of ice with a bloody towel wrapped around his arm. The second thing he notices is that this man is one of 3 people already in line, and only one (toothless :thumbsup2) guy working the register. Taylor finally makes it to second in line, and the woman in front of him asks for Roy. "Naw," the man at the register replies, "he just went into the bathroom, he ain't gun be out for 'nother...oh 30 minutes or so." The woman, naturally curious I suppose, for I would never ask this, wants to know why. "Oh he musta ate him something bad, it's been like that for the past 3 days. He goes to the bathroom, and he don't come out for half an hour."

At this point Taylor pays as quickly as he can, pumps the gas as quickly as he can, and then jumps in the car. "We are not getting food until we leave here," he tells us, and refuses to say another word. Megan and I just kind of shrug, because we really weren't in the best part of town. Anywho, so we're pulling out of the gas station, and this car pulls in really fast and really wide, almost clipping us. I can tell Taylor's about to yell, so I just put a hand on his arm to try and calm him down some, and that's when the car's headlights turn away so we can see the driver. He is wearing a hooded sweatshirt........and a ski mask:eek:. You probably heard the tires squealing as we tore out of there.

I did change my Avatar pic! Thanks for noticing! I am going to change it again to a picture from our last trip when I have a minute.

Pollyanna Perfect! :lmao::laughing::rotfl: That made me laugh!

That may have to be a PM story! :upsidedow

After catching up on a gazillion pages of posts, and then reading your update, the first thing that crossed my mind was "This family needs to have a camera crew following them... I would love to watch this reality show!!! :thumbsup2

Chapter Four: Grubby & Chubby - I was ready to eat!

After washing up and straightening the atomic wedgies we each had after sitting for so long, we sat at a nice table and noticed all the rest of the people.

Business groups and duos.

The place was full.

A good sign I thought.

We were under-dressed but we were ready to eat!!

Actually, I think we were dressed fine minus the birds nest in my hair and the peacock feathers in Carsyn's.

Boys are lucky!

I did feel better though from at least splashing cold water on my face.

Now the Bobby Flay episode said that Lynn's Bourbon Ball french toast was the bomb. We decided to order 3 meals and share. :teacher: The sizes being brought out were massive and there was no reason to stuff to the point of being sick. We had a long road ahead! I copied the descriptions from the menu for you all.

http://www.lynnsparadisecafe.com/about_us.htm
This is the cafe website.

Biscuits and Gravy—Homemade buttermilk biscuits
smothered in our own sausage gravy

P1030804.jpg

P1030805.jpg

Now this was good. The biscuits were great, flaky, not too dense. The gravy mix had ok flavor and a lot of actual bites of sausage in the gravy. I think the gravy could have been accented by a bit of butter depth & a hint of Worcestershire . I also like a more peppery bite so I added pepper to my portion. :snooty:

Breakfast Burrito—Flour tortilla filled with our black bean chili, cheddar cheese, scrambled eggs,
sour cream and house made salsa. Served with choice of one side

P1030806.jpg

This was okay. Again, expecting more something. Something with a bite. Chorizzo might have been nice or a smokey chipotle hint to the egg with a seasoned sour cream.

Carsyn said it was just "eh-"

Bourbon Ball French Toast which was the winner in the bobby Flay Throw Down.:

Great Pic I stole from the food network.
bt0106_bourbon_ball_ft2_lg.jpg

This was not what we expected at all. The custard sauce was not like a whip cream sweet. Very bland. We all were in love when we saw it and then:

Everyone took a bite and nobody touched it again.

The presentation had you ready for this amazing piece of heaven and then - you found out heaven was actually in Idaho. (I have never been to Idaho so do not write me if you live there. Ya know what I mean.)

We asked for some maple syrup and Dan and Baylor then devoured it. :wizard: I do not want to think of the calories in that one.

The bread they use is awesome - great cinnamon flavor. I would not change it.

The strawberries (although not ripe enough to give it much flavor) and drizzle of chocolate were a nice touch.

The key though - is that the custard you expect some form of "pop" from and there is none. Like no flavor pudding. :headache:

That is exactly what it tasted like.

French toast with no flavor pudding. Custard at times has flavor. This was just substance.

I think next time - we would order just the plain french toast. The extra calories with no flavor IMO are a waste. With syrup - even whip cream which would have a sweet kick - it would be much better.

We make a french toast based on a Disney recipe at this house with some extra ingredients. Top that with real maple syrup and the must have egg bread - and it beats hers any day. I truly believe that.

The description of the Bourban Ball French Toast was not on the menu online - but you better all kiss my tukkus :rotfl2:- cause I found the actual recipe and have it here for you all to replicate! Yes it is for real! I think I will make it at home but add more sweetener to the custard - more vanilla as well and see if I cannot improve on it.

Bourbon Ball French Toast from Lynn's Paradise Cafe
Cook Time 30 minutes 6 servings
Ingredients
Batter:

* 6 eggs
* 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
* 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
* 1/8 teaspoon salt
* 1 1/4 cups milk
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

French Toast:

* 1 (16-ounce) loaf firm textured bread, preferably a baguette
* Canola oil, for frying
* Bourbon Vanilla Custard, recipe follows
* Chocolate syrup
* Kentucky Bourbon Whipped Cream, recipe follows
* 1 pint fresh sliced strawberries
* 1 cup toasted pecan halves

Directions

For the batter: Beat all batter ingredients together in a medium-sized bowl. Set aside.

For the French Toast: Slice the baguette into 18 thick slices. Soak the slices in the batter for about 3 minutes, turning to coat evenly on each side. Heat oil in a large saute pan over medium-high heat. Lift the bread from the batter and place it in the hot pan. Add only enough slices to fit easily in the pan. Saute on both sides until golden brown. Keep warm until all slices have been cooked.

Place 3 slices on each plate. Drizzle with warm Bourbon Vanilla Custard. Garnish with chocolate syrup and Kentucky Bourbon Whipped Cream. Top with sliced strawberries and toasted pecan halves. Serve immediately.
Bourbon Vanilla Custard:

2 cups half-and-half

1 cup heavy cream

4 large egg yolks

1/2 cup sugar

4 teaspoons cornstarch

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/3 cup Kentucky bourbon

Heat half-and-half and whipping cream in a small saucepan over low heat, until the mixture begins to simmer. Remove from heat and set aside.

Whisk egg yolks, sugar and cornstarch in a stainless steel bowl for about 2 minutes or until the mixture thickens and lightens in color. Slowly pour the hot cream into the egg mixture, whisking constantly. Return the custard to the saucepan and place over low heat. Stir constantly until the mixture reaches 170 degrees F. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla and bourbon. Serve immediately or hold over a hot water bath.

Yield: 3 1/2 cups
Kentucky Bourbon Whipped Cream:

2 cups heavy cream

3 tablespoons powdered sugar

3 tablespoons Kentucky bourbon

Whip cream in well chilled mixing bowl just until soft peaks form. Add powdered sugar and bourbon and whip just long enough to incorporate. Taste and adjust flavors. Chill until ready for use.

Yield: 3 cups

So overall, I would come back again. Try something different. Great atmosphere. I will say though that Baylor said, "You should have a restaurant. Your food is better."

Then Carsyn agreed and Dan said, "I have been telling you this."

If you love to cook and love the kitchen, it is hard sometimes to know how to explain what something is missing.

I have an entire cupboard of spices and still want more. When I cook, I go by smell and close my eyes and just know what will taste good and what will not.

Half the time I have no clue what spices I will put in or have. No looking at labels is my motto. It gives you a false sense of disciplined construction in food.

Like "Basil is for Italian food - not Greek." It limits your creativity. :upsidedow

It makes you at some level, turn your palette away from what might be amazing because it is not the norm.

So I liked Lynn's. I am not from the south so I do not know if foods tend to just be more bland. But the trio we tried would not have been on my menu of choice without a bit of alteration.

Here, in MN - we are Hot Dish heaven and a ton of food I think, needs more flavor than "Cheese".

I just know that she has some great ideas, and I would just have given it a bit more zip to take it from great to extraordinary. We by no means touched the inventory though, and some other things on the menu look great! popcorn::

After, we took a few more pics outside.

They have a flip flop pipe organ that is just a hoot! :rotfl:

I wished I had a tomato to throw here! ;)

The only one I managed to snag of Carsyn who was more worried about her appearance at that moment! So the irony it is not a great pic is awesome! pirate:

P1030810.jpg

Then - we were ready to head towards Knoxville!

Only 4 hours left on the road! :dance3:

Our bill BTW - $33.92 including tip at Lynn's. We all ordered water I believe so no huge drink tab!

DH had the Bourbon Toast and felt the same way. I had some kind of awesome scramble with crispy onions and fried green tomatoes on the side. Hello, lovah! That was good!

Glad to see some food porn!

You should definitely open up a restaurant! I live close enough that our family of 5 could come... there is some good business for you! ;)

I'll give the PG-13ish Pollyanna Perfect version of my trip to Chubby's...

My girlfriends and I went to Marley's-restaurant by day, dance club at night. We met this group of guys from Illinois who were there for a bachelor party and were dancing and hanging out with them. They decided that they were going to go to Chubby's and asked us to go along, we said sure, so we hopped in a cab and away we went. They paid for us to get in, bought our drinks and lap dances :3dglasses and then when it was time to go called us a cab and back to our hotel we went(us girls, alone! No guys)... There may have been flashing by certain members of our party and I may have made out with one of the guys. It was more of a PG-13 night as far as behavior went with some R-ratings due to the location and visuals... I still have that wristband from getting in. I wasn't a wild child by any means, I had Mariah when I was 19, so after I got divorced this was my one wild, let it all out weekend.

LOVE the new update. I'll actually be going to Indianapolis next month, so I might have to convince my parents to make a detour. DOOO IT!!!

That would so be the type of conversation I would throw up hearing in person! Low gag reflex threshold here! :scared1:
He is wearing a hooded sweatshirt........and a ski mask:eek:. You probably heard the tires squealing as we tore out of there.
That is scary!!!!
I did change my Avatar pic! Thanks for noticing! I am going to change it again to a picture from our last trip when I have a minute.
You threw me for a loop. I totally go by visuals when I see who is posting...

After catching up on a gazillion pages of posts, and then reading your update, the first thing that crossed my mind was "This family needs to have a camera crew following them... I would love to watch this reality show!!! :thumbsup2
I need to loose 80 pounds first! Then I would consider it.

Actually - when I was married to the kids Dad - we were selected to be on a show ABC was trying to pull together called, "Fix My Husband." It never got off the ground and so I had to divorce him since he couldn't be fixed!

Ok - that was a joke - sort of - but it was too bad that ABC never got it off the ground. It was going to be a show that focused on one family a week - a husband that never finished projects - had great ideas and no follow through. We went through several phone interviews then were asked to come in and they did taping of us.

I remember I made the comment when they asked what I would do if he actually ever finished anything he started.

I said, "Probably s**t a pink twinkie."

They were laughing so hard the camera guy was not able to control the shot and we had to do another take.

That is the benefit of your brain going in 10 million directions. You never know what you will create or say until it is too late.

DH had the Bourbon Toast and felt the same way. Glad you said that - It was too much of nothing. I had some kind of awesome scramble with crispy onions and fried green tomatoes on the side. Hello, lovah! That was good!
I think I know what you had! They served that in the throw down too.

bt0106_kentucky_scramble1_lg.jpg

Kentucky Scramble
Ingredients

* 1 tablespoon butter
* 1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil
* 8 ounces diced boneless country ham
* 1/2 cup diced roasted red peppers
* 12 large eggs, whisked until well blended
* 4 ounces grated Jarlsberg cheese (recommended: Kenny's Country)
* Salt and pepper

Directions

Heat a nonstick 12-inch saute pan over medium heat. Add butter and oil and swirl around the pan until melted. Add the country ham and saute until it begins to brown, about 3 minutes. Turn heat to low. Stir in roasted red peppers and beaten eggs. After the eggs begin to set, stir slowly from edge to edge with a heat-resistant rubber spatula until large curds form. This will take 5 minutes or so. When eggs are still moist and slightly runny, fold in the grated cheese and season with salt and pepper.

Remove the pan from the heat and serve with fried green tomatoes and buttermilk biscuits with sorghum butter.

Glad to see some food porn!

You should definitely open up a restaurant! I live close enough that our family of 5 could come... there is some good business for you! ;)
I will never open up pone until we move south. I want one bad but one where we will stay!
I still have that wristband from getting in. I wasn't a wild child by any means, I had Mariah when I was 19, so after I got divorced this was my one wild, let it all out weekend.

I get it and I want a pic of that wristband if you have it! That story made me laugh!

Ok, when I get home and remember I will take a pic of it. But I bet it looks nothing like what you expect...

If you open a restaurant down south then I can't come visit as often :sad1:

We could open up a traveling restaurant that runs out of the back of the van as we do the book tour. It could work. We might need a bigger van or an RV of some kind though. Oh my gravy (I stole that from the cowboys on The Amazing Race!) now I'm starving and I'm making it a point to do really good this week because I want that gosh darn hammock for my siggie. Ok, I'll just close my eyes at my desk for a minute and DREAM of DAwn's yummy food.

too bad the french toast is disappointing, it definitely looks heavenly!!

i can't believe how much older Baylor is looking, especially since i just read the other two trippies - it's quite a difference!

If you open a restaurant down south then I can't come visit as often :sad1:
Vacations baby!!
i have nothing witty to say, HI!:)
Your screen name cracks me up! Saying HI alone is very witty.
We could open up a traveling restaurant that runs out of the back of the van as we do the book tour. It could work.

This could happen if we did like carnivals...get one of those mini doughnut style trailers...one stop city tours and wrote about the adventures and characters along the way!

I need to get paid for this cause I am really serious...the Dis paychecks are not cutting it! :lmao:

i can't believe how much older Baylor is looking, especially since i just read the other two trippies - it's quite a difference!

He is growing up for sure and after the burn - Dec 2008 pics - he was sooo skinny.

Vacations baby!!

Good idea! Can you make sure its someplace thats vacationable or at least close to vacationable then? Like within an hour of WDW or any ocean beach city... If its some back woods toothless place in Louisiana you moved to so you could win the Ms. Best Teeth City contest count us out!
